Twenty-two letters from J. Butler from Shrewsbury and London to Mrs Baker at Dolgelley. The letters contain bitter remarks about the envy and malice of Merionethshire families, and threats to punish them for their insolence towards him. In no. 292 he asks Mrs Baker whether her father was a clergyman, how much would clear her of debts in Merionethshire, and whether she would like to be brought into a more civilised and enlightened part of the kingdom, Shropshire for instance? Nos 293 to 301 relate to Mrs Baker's business in London and expose the duplicity of Mrs Gilbert, whose character he describes as 'infamous'. In nos 299 and 301 he refers to the death of Mrs Baker's old friend, the Duchess of Kingston.
