The first and main accrual, made in 1977, comprising some twenty-one boxes and described elsewhere, reflects J. R. Jones' valuable contribution to nationalist and religious philosophy, and his wider contribution to the field of philosophy and his specific interest in the nature of the self. -- The first deposit is mainly in Welsh and the catalogue prepared at NLW is also in Welsh. It consists mainly of his publications, books, pamphlets and articles, together with his academic notes. The correspondence is scarce, no more than forty individual letters, but there is an extensive collection of newspaper cuttings containing annotations in his hand. -- The second group, described here, consists mainly of notes dating from his period as a student and as a lecturer. However, it does also include a small collection of offprints and other printed material, together with some personal possesions once belonging to Professor A. E. Heath. -- Despite the fact that the notebooks have been arranged into two series, notes taken as a student and notes used to deliver lectures, there is some evidence to suggest that the earlier notes were used at a later date to prepare lectures. Some notebooks belonging to the same series are split between the two accruals - attention has been drawn to this whenever possible.

Many of the papers, including most of the earliest papers, consist of three small unrelated groups, relating to Tir y waun in the parish of Llansawel, 1738-1832, Cwmeinon in Caeo and Llansawel, 1793-1924, and Bryntelych in Caeo, 1782-1864. Benjamin Davies of Ffrwd-fal came into possession of Cwneinon in 1797, and his son David Davies appears to have managed Bryntelych and Cefntelych on behalf of J. Lewis of Aston Vicarage, Bristol, [1822x1835], before he came into possession of them himself in 1864, after the sale of the 'Cayo estate' in 1863. The relationship between Tir y waun and Ffrwd-fal is less clear. In 1832 David Davies was a party to a deed relating to Tir y waun, suggesting that he may have acted as agent to the Du Buisson family of Glan hir in Llandybïe, in which case the Tir y waun papers may have come into his possession as part of his agency. The archive also includes Davies of Ffrwd-fal genealogical and estate papers, 1817-1938, and letters and accounts relating to David Davies's agency of Carmarthenshire properties of David Runwa Paynter and Sophia Catherine Paynter (née Aylmer) of Dale Castle, Pembrokeshire, 1821-1859, and smaller groups of papers relating to other agency work, including rentals and other papers relating to the Rhosybedw estate, Carmarthenshire, 1839-1841, and papers relating to the executors of Mrs Margaret Jones of Gelli in the parish of Betws, Carmarthenshire, 1856-1857.

The catalogued material comprises two groups of deeds and other documents relating to lands of the Bodwenni and Syrior estates in Merionethshire, Denbighshire and Montgomeryshire, and to the Roberts, Williams and Evans families of Bodwenni and Syrior, [13th century]-1833; miscellaneous literary manuscripts, [16th century]-[19th cenury]; and printed material. Comprises letters, 1957-1997, to John Morris, mainly of political interest. Many of the letters are from John Morris's Aberavon constituents. In some cases there are copies of his replies and/or drafts of his replies, prepared to be typed up by a secretary. The letters cover a wide range of subjects, mainly governmental affairs and the work of various governmental ministries and departments, above all the Welsh Office. Many letters concern the Labour Party, its various committees and its internal affairs. Many of the letters are from constituents who make enquiries and refer problems and difficulties to their Member of Parliament. Some also concern the framing and implementation of various pieces of legislation. There are also many subject files, 1951-1995, divided into British subjects, Welsh affairs, many of these concerning devolution, and constituency matters. The subject files relating to British politics nationally include material on a wide range of subjects including defence, disarmament, education, the EEC, parliamentary elections, the environment, foreign affairs, housing, the Labour Party, leasehold reform, local government, pensions, the steel industry, transport, and specific pieces of parliamentary legislation. The files on Welsh affairs include material on the Welsh Office, the Labour Party Wales, the Crowther/Kilbrandon Commission and devolution, the Development Corporation for Wales, and the Welsh language. Thirdly, there is a group of printed, typescript and manuscript materials and diaries, 1943-1991. A further file, being Lord Morris's earliest drafts of the chapter on Kosovo (chapter 21), for inclusion in his book 'Fifty Years in Politics and the Law', published in 2011, was received in Februay 2013. This file is under Embargo during the lifetime of the donor. Further donations of material were made in Augist 2015 and August 2015. These remain uncatalogued although photographs have been transferred to photo albums and videocasettes, sound cassettes and DVDs have been transferred to the National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales.
