Pedigree and achievement, 1591, of Francis Vaughan (Vychan or Vichan, d. 1597), of [Sutton-upon-Derwent], Yorkshire, compiled by Thomas Jones (Twm Siôn Cati) of Fountain Gate, Cardiganshire, and probably executed by Richard Adams 'paynter of Ludlow' (c.f. NLW Roll 226), with fifty-three fully painted coats of arms, mostly impaled and many quartered.
The pedigree is traced from 'Kradog Vraychvras, Earle off Herefourde', 'Iustyn ap Gurgan, K[ing] of Glamorgan & Morganog', 'Ryes Tewder [Rhys ap Tewdwr], King off Southwales', 'Griffith ap Kynan, King off Northwales', and 'Bleddyn ap Kynvin, Prynce off Powys', as well as from Edward I. Additional information is enclosed in twelve cartouches, mostly scattered throughout the top third of the pedigree, with one each in the bottom corners. The pedigree most closely resembles 'Style 1' in Michael Powell Siddons, Welsh Pedigree Rolls (Aberystwyth, 1996), p. 11. Vaughan's grandfather was Thomas Vaughan of Porthaml, Talgarth, Breconshire; the family's association with Yorkshire began only with Francis's father, John, who settled there early in the reign of Elizabeth I. Francis Vaughan was chief steward of crown lands in the East Riding from 1580, High Sheriff of Yorkshire, 1594-95, and was killed in Ulster, in service to the crown, in July 1597.

The 1939 deposit consists of deeds and documents, 1549-1887, relating to properties in Montgomeryshire, Merionethshire, Breconshire and Shropshire. The 1973 deposit mainly contains deeds and documents, 1564-1932, relating to properties in Montgomeryshire, many relating to the Lloyd family of Montgomery. The 1979 deposit comprises materials gathered by J. D. K. Lloyd for a History of Montgomery; a bundle of deeds and documents, [19 cent.]-[20 cent.], relating to the family of Lloyd of Plas Trefaldwyn, Montgomery, and Castell Forwyn, Abermule; photographic albums, 1898-1978, comprising mainly family photographs; a collection of over 1000 postcards and photographs of historic buildings throughout Europe; and seven manuscript maps of land in Montgomeryshire, 1772-1858.

Pedigree and achievement, 1598, of John Price [or Pryse] of Gogerddan, Cardiganshire, with fifteen coats of arms, all emblazoned and painted, compiled by Thomas Jones of Fountain Gate, Tregaron, Cardiganshire.
The pedigree consists of the achievement of arms in the centre and the arms of Price's male ancestors arranged around the border, and is an example of 'Style 5' in Michael Powell Siddons, Welsh Pedigree Rolls (Aberystwyth, 1996), p. 12. The pedigree is traced from the tenth-century 'Klothian ap Gwydhere' [Cloddien ap Gwrydr Hir] and his wife Morfudd, daughter of Owain ap Tythwalch. Although ascribed to Jones, the pedigree was written by one of a number of scribes employed by him (see Michael Powell Siddons, 'Welsh Pedigree Rolls - Additions and Corrections', National Library of Wales Journal, 32 (2001-2), 433-42 (pp. 433-4), and Daniel Huws, 'Twm Siôn Cati', Carmarthenshire Antiquary, 45 (2009), 39-45 (pp. 40-41, 45)).

A commonplace book containing prognostications, weather lore, chronology, calendars, a table of Easter dates for 1600-1701 compiled by Rice Jones in 1598, an account of the English alphabet, historical 'englynion', and miscellaneous verse. The volume belonged in the eighteenth century to David Jones, Trefriw, who copied into it extracts from William Salesbury: A Dictionary in Englyshe and Welshe ... and from the almanacks of Thomas Jones, and some genealogical memoranda.

A German heraldic manuscript, written mainly in 1598 with further additions written before 1611, containing painted coats of arms with banners. About half the paintings relate to families belonging to the Patriciate of Nuremberg, including the families of Imhoff, Oelhafen, Haller, Muffel and Kress.
The original folios have been cut out and mounted in an album of the 19 cent. The title page (f. 1) reads 'Hernach Volgende herrn und Junckhern haben den Andern Becher machen lassen. Anno Christi 1598'.

A manuscript entitled Positions proved by Rowland Owen gentleman of ... Anglesey ... that the papistes have most inhumanely iniured your most sacred Maiestie from your infancie; that they have wronged me by whom they understood ... that your wronges should be reavealed ... The manuscript is unfinished and was prepared by the author for presentation to King James I, with the royal arms stamped on the front and back of the cover.

A collection of recusant texts in English copied partly from printed sources. Contains the lives of Saints Catherine of Alexandria (ff. 1-15v), Barbara (ff. 15v-64v), Dorothy (ff. 64v-8), Modwen, with verse prologue, the life translated from Noua legenda anglie. Enprynted ... by Wynkyn de Worde ... 1521 (ff. 68-80), Ursula, in verse (ff. 80-91v), The Complaynt of St Marie Magdaleyne in verse (ff. 92-104v), John of Beverley (ff. 104v-13v) and Erasmus (ff. 113v-17). Folios 117v-35v are blank. There follow the tracts A dialogue of dying wel from the Italian of Peter of Lucca copied from the Antwerp edition of 1603 (ff. 136-64v); John Fisher, A spirituall consolation, and the tracts printed with it in the edition of c. 1578 (ff. 164v-202v); The distributing of spirituall exercises for all the daye (ff. 202v-19); The spirituall conflict [from the Italian of Lorenzo Scupoli] probably from the 1598 edition (ff. 219-44); An epistle in the person of Christ to the faithfull soule by Lanspergius, from the 1595 edition, fragmentary text (ff. 244-7v). Apart from f. 69, an inserted leaf, all is written by a single clear but stilted hand, probably female. Crude coloured initials and decoration. Phillipps MS 13839.

Pedigree and coat of arms of William Lloyd of Halghton, co. Flint, esq., and his wife Jane, daughter of Ralph Broughton of Plas Isa, Is-y-coed, co. Denbigh, esq., traced from Ynyr ap Cadfarch, Gwaithfoed of Ceredigion, Gruffudd ap Cynan and Maredudd ap Bleddyn ap Cynfyn, with fifty-three other coats of arms, all painted, compiled in 1602 by Rhys Cain of Oswestry, with additions probably in a later seventeenth-century hand. Commentaries on the pedigree are written within nine cartouches, mostly ornamented.

The Celynog Manuscripts are a collection of miscellaneous 17th to 19th century correspondence and papers, consisting of examples of Welsh literature, Welsh poetry, musical compositions, works on Welsh grammar, medical recipes, extracts from various newspapers and periodicals, tithe accounts, and genealogical, geographical, historical and political manuscripts. -- The collection also contains manuscripts relating to religion in Wales, with examples of Welsh religious literature, Welsh sermons and hymns, and manuscripts relating to the Welsh Congregational churches, and translations of charters granted to the abbey of Strata Florida.
