Reverend David Ellis: Cerddi, llythyrau, &c.

Transcript written by the Rev. David Ellis at various times. Originally consisted of four or five separate books. Book I, pp. 1-270 written in 1789 (p. 119); Book II, pp. 271-398 and 713-794 written in 1794 (pp. 271 and 380); Book III, pp. 399-556; Book IV, pp. 559-608; Book V, pp. 609-712. It appears that pp. 47-148 were copied from Pen[iarth MS] 124, pp. 233-266, or from a common original, and pp. 747-797 from Cwrtmawr MSS 3 and 4, which were used by David Ellis. The version of the Gododin (pp. 559-608) was used by Rev. J. Williams ab Ithel (see p. 559) in his edition of that poem.

A volume, 1750-1793, containing autograph verse, in Welsh, by John Jenkins (Ioan Siencyn), together with works by other poets, detailed in a title which appears on p. v: Cydymmaith i'r Awen, Sef Casgliad o Gywyddau ac Englynion, a chaniadau awenyddol ar amryw Destynnau : O waith y Beirdd mwyaf godidawg O'r Deheudir : yn yr oes ddiwethaf a aeth heibio, ar oes Bressennol sef, Gwaith Mr. Iefan Gryffydd o'r Twrgwyn, a'r Parchedig Mr. Alban Tomas Curat Blaen Porth, a Thre Mein : Mr. Siengcin Tomas or Cwmdu, Mr. Iefan Tomas o Lanarth, y Parchedig Uchelddusg Mr. Iefan Iefans o Ledrod. A gasglwyd, ac a gyfansoddwyd gan mwyaf gan Ioan Siengcin o Abertifi. Y mae'r Awdwyr uchod wedi meirw oll: ond myfi Ioan Siengcin : ac os gwelaf i yr 20ed Dydd fawrth nesaf mi fyddaf 75. 1790. Much of the contents of this book was utilised by John Howell (Ioan ab Hywel) in his Collection of Poetry entitled Blodau Dyfed, printed at Carmarthen in 1824. Parts of the book were probably written as early as 1752, as appears from some englynion on p. iii, which are dated Med. 14, 1752, and it was completed in 1793 (p. 2).

Genedigaeth y Brenin Arthur

A fragment corresponding to chapters III, IV & V in the First Book of Malory's Morte Darthur. This version differs in many important particulars from those tabulated in Dr Sommer's Morte Darthur, Vol. III. Peniarth MS 215, pp. 317-348, appears to be a direct, but inaccurate, copy from this original. This text is printed in Y Cymmrodor, Vol. XXIV, pp. 250-258.
