Letters and miscellaneous papers comprising two letters [+], 1693, from Ch[arles] Owen, Oswestree to the Lady Archer near Epping in Essex (acknowledging all the expressions of her ladyship's extraordinary favours to him, mentioning that after a tedious ramble and censorious suspicions he came home in safety, the liberality of friends, 'Yet all this will not do for a Compensation for the injury done me', he desired his brother to assist Mr (?) Durrant in adjusting those wretched differences at Epping - her Ladyship's honourable attempts towards it); seven letters [+] from T[homas] Burgess, successively bishop of St Davids and of Salisbury, one written from C[orpus] C[hristi] C[ollege], Oxford, 1787, to T[homas] Falconer, Esq'r, Chester (thanking him for the present of his little book, requesting the addressee's opinion on the meaning of a passage from the Gospels and quoting from the preface to a second edition of the [Salisbury] spelling-book), two, possibly three, written from Abergwilly Palace and London, 1813-14, to the Reverend T. W. [recte T. D.] Fosbrooke, Walford, near Ross (commending the addressee's intention of publishing a 'cheap comment' on the New Testament, he seems to have taken up a very wrong conception of the Bible Society) and three written from Salisbury, 1831, to Mr Strong, bookseller, Bristol (instructions re books, was very sorry to see that the addressee has been a sufferer by the late disastrous events at Bristol); a copy of an engraved portrait of the Right Reverend Thomas Burgess, DD, Lord Bishop of Salisbury; a letter, year not given, from Joseph D[?ownes], Builth to [John Dix] (acknowledging the addressee's most welcome letter belying his wife's guesses, the indirect source of the addressee's recovery from misfortune if not illness, his own writing, mention of Edinburgh, etc.); a note, 1811, from Mr Pennant, Downing to a Mrs Williams (complying with her request on behalf of Hugh Shone and his aged wife); a list by J. Davies headed 'Myrddin MSS (1) Eben Fardd'; and a bundle of miscellaneous papers [#] including 'Eifionydd', a holograph poem in Welsh by E[benezer] Thomas ('Eben Fardd'), Clynnog, 22 July 1829; 'Myfyrdawd y Bardd am ei gariad pan oedd hi yn mordwo o Ynys Fôn i Fanaw' by Rhobt Huws ('Rhobin ddu o Fôn'); one or two items probably in the autograph of the Reverend Peter Bailey Williams (English verse, a draft of a letter [to the editors of the Welsh Magazine], etc.), 'An Infentory of Coods & Cattells of Mr Morgan ap Ragnard ap Maddocke of te County of Clamorganshire shentilman ...', endorsed 'The Welch Inventory', and miscellaneous documents, 1588-1767, including a bond, 1588, relating to properties within the township of Llanvair in the commot of Iscor', Caernarfonshire, a citation, 1652, relating to the administration of the goods of Richard Thomas [? of Talgarth, Breconshire], a grant, 1734, relating to Bryn y Fedwen estate in the parish of Llanrug, Caernarfonshire, and a return, 1767, by Edward Watkins, curate, certifying that there are no Papists within his parish of Llangaffo or Llangeinwen, Anglesey. The items marked + were formerly Phillipps MS 35051 (see letter dated 9 February 1973 from Dr A. N. L. Munby to the Keeper of Manuscripts, National Library of Wales). # - The wrapping paper has on it 'Phillipps MSS 34929' in pencil in the autograph of J. H. Davies but, with the exception of the 'inventory of goods', the contents of this package do not appear to correspond to the description of Phillipps MS 34929 as given by Dr Munby in his letter, although Phillipps MS 34929 was purchased by J. H. Davies.

Miscellaneous papers of Owen Jones (1833-99) comprising a notebook containing a Welsh translation by [Owen Jones] of 'Antigone', dated 12 Jan. 1866 (cf. Y Traethodydd XXI (1866), pp. 176-202) and some items of verse, 1869-75; a list of book titles, 1841-90, also by Owen Jones, with some notes in pencil probably by Charles Ashton; a notebook in an earlier hand containing hymn stanzas and other items of verse in Welsh, with receipts, 1854-5, from Thomas Jones, Vrongain [Llidiardau near Bala] to various persons for rents in the Llidiardau district, 'Coste wrth adeiladu Ty'r ffridd, 1859', etc.; and other items including 'Cwrs y Byd', gan un a'i lygad yn ei ben, Llythyr viii', a letter from Owen Jones to [?the Reverend John Davies, Bontddu] (beginning wanting), a copy of a reply, 1861, from Owen Jones to Dr Edwards concerning Llanuwchllyn, some Bala College examination results [1866], 'Dau Hir a Thoddaid, Beddargraph Thomas Stephens, Merthyr (Eisteddfod Caernarfon 1877)' by 'Dyfrid Beneurog', Alban Hefin 1877, extracts from printed sources including Y Drysorfa and one or two printed items ('Cyfarfod Misol Trefaldwyn Uchaf. Rheolau Sefydlog'), etc.

A manuscript of the Reverend Jeffrey Davies, Penrhiw, Llangamarch, Brecknockshire containing mainly notes of sermons, scriptural addresses and meditations. The first page is dated 28 August 1833 and the last 14 June 1835, but there are a few intermediate dates within the period 1839-40. The text on pp. 270 ff. is entitled 'y pumed pwngc i araithio arno yn Ngyfarfod blynyddol yr Ysgol Sabbath yn Defynog Mawrth 13 1835'. At the end of the volume are verses entitled 'Cymanfa Cader Idris. Hanes cymanfa a gynhalwyd ar gopa Cader Idris ... i ystyriaid y modd mwyaf effeithiol i dynu i lawr yr Hen Eglwys Loeger ac i ymwrthod ar degymau'.

A notebook bearing the name 'Nancy Williams, Drysgol, Abergwesyn' containing press cuttings (poetry, etc.) in English and Welsh and some items in manuscript including an 'englyn' 'I Miss Nancy Williams' by [the Reverend Evan Afan Jenkins] 'Ifan Afan', Moriah, Whitland. The press cuttings include 'Rhestr o Hen Dai Adfeiledig ym mhlwyf Llanwrtyd gan Mr Evan Jones, Tynypant, Llanwrtyd', relating to Llanddewi Abergwesyn, Llanfihangel Abergwesyn and Tir-yr-Abad.

A notebook bearing the name of 'R. Prys Morris ('Robyn Frych') Dolgellau, 1880' containing verses entitled 'Ymddiddan rhwng dau frawd [Henry a Morris] yn nghylch Priodi' (? written in another hand); extracts from Richard Clarke Sewell, A Treatise on the Law of Sheriff (London, 1842); cuttings from The Cambrian News, 1880-1, relating to the name 'Corris'; extracts by 'Robyn Frych' from two vestry-books belonging to the parish of Towyn, Merioneth, which came to light in 1880, including a series of cuttings from The Cambrian News, 1880-1, on the same subject; and a few pedigrees. At the reverse end is a transcript of a paper by Ma[t]thew Holbeche Bloxam on 'Sepulchral Monuments In Towyn Church, Merionethshire' (see Archaeologia Cambrensis, 1875, pp. 211-15). The following note has been written in pencil on the fly-leaf: 'Gofaler am beidio son mai mam Mari Jones aeth i mofyn y Beibl at Mr Charles i'r Bala, os gwelir cyfeiriad at hyny ym mhlith fy ysgrifeniadau i er mai felly fu R Prys Morris'.

A composite volume made up of notebooks, etc. in the autograph of Ebenezer Thomas ('Eben Fardd') containing notes on 'Evidences of Christianity' ('From Abbott', 'Paley's Evidences') and on Latin grammar, copies of memorial inscriptions (Clynnog churchyard, Llanarmon churchyard), pedigrees, 'Biosianos' (a few autobiographical notes ending 1839) etc.; 'Caniadau sef Awdlau, Cywyddau, ac Englynion ynghyd a Chaniadau ar amryw fesurau eraill o waith Ebenezer Thomas neu Cybi o Eifion y rhai a ysgrifenodd, pan oedd yn ysgol Tydweiliog ei oedran 18. Gorffen haf 4. 1821', being early poetical compositions by 'Eben Fardd', 1819-24, one or two crossed out; another notebook containing 'The Pedigree of Rowland Jones of Broom Hall Esq. Extracted from the Works of his Father, Row. Jones of Hendre, and afterwards of the Inner Temple London, Esqr. Barrister at Law', followed by notes in pencil and other pedigrees (Prysgyni, Tanybryn Llanllyfni, the Glynllifon family); a cutting of verses entitled 'Llan y Plwy' printed in Y Cymro, with an explanatory note in the autograph of 'E[ben] Vardd'; and some later poetical compositions by 'Eben Fardd'.

A composite volume in the autograph of Ebenezer Thomas ('Eben Fardd') containing (?)essays or addresses (prefaced 'Sketches & Stories') on 'Nodweddiad Cenedlaethol', 'Darllenyddiaeth', etc., with a 'Hir a Thoddaid' beginning 'Wyneb y Genedl o hen Baganiaeth', (?) an adjudication on 'Darlleniaeth', with verses entitled 'Darlleniaeth yr Ysgrythyr', a translation into English by Bl. ab C. of six lines from Eben Fardd's 'Dinystr Jerusalem', a notebook bearing on the cover the words 'Dechreu yr ysgol yn yr Eglwys', containing memoranda, accounts, etc., 1824-9, relating mainly to Clynnog school, 1827-8 (names of scholars), with some earlier references to Llangybi and Llanarmon, a list of poems by Goronwy Owen with the year of their composition, and a copy of the protest presented to Lord Mostyn following the awarding of the chair prize at the Rhuddlan Eisteddfod, 1850, for a 'pryddest' instead of an 'awdl', with a copy of Lord Mostyn's reply.

A notebook in the hand of Jonathan Owain Reynolds ('Nathan Dyfed'; 1814-91), containing copiously annotated examples of doggerel verse submitted by Morgan Manner (Mainwaring) ('Bardd y Dwr') to mock literary competitions organised by the young men of Merthyr Tudful annually on New Year's Day, and transcripts of verses by Glamorgan bards, such as Rhys Hywel Rhys, Blaen-y-glais, Y Faenor, Thomas Dafydd Miles, Dyffryn, Aberdâr, Emwnt Rhys, 'Nathan Dyfed', Watkin Dafydd ('Y Tribanwr'), the Reverend Dafydd Saunders, Merthyr, etc.

A volume containing pedigrees transcribed by J. H. Davies mainly from the Golden Grove Book of Pedigrees, L1659-L1675, followed by a number of holograph letters, etc., the details of which are as follows: Samuel Roberts ['S. 'hir a thoddaid' and an 'englyn' by Ceiriog in memory of [Ebenezer Thomas] 'Eben Fardd', and a letter from J. C[eiriog] Hughes, Caersws to W. A. Swettenham, 1879 (permanent way materials on hand and wanted), a letter (incomplete) from [Robert John Pryse ('Gweirydd ap Rhys')], Bangor to an unnamed correspondent, [18]78 (the addressee's request to have his letters returned), A. J. Johnes, Garthmyl, Welshpool to the Reverend R. Richards, Caerwys, 1836 (1) (the writer has recently been attacked for inaccuracy by the Dean of St Asaph - a request for information), H. Jones, Dinas and Pen rhiw'r kiln [i.e. Hugh Jones, Maesglasau] to the Reverend Mr Richards, Darowen, 1816-17 (2) (the writer's unhappy state and condition), W[illia]m Owen Pughe, London to Mr Ed. Jones, Minffordd Cottage, Tal y Llyn, 1812 (1) (is glad to hear the addressee has succeeded in procuring a boat for Llyn Cau) and to the Reverend Mr Richards, Llannevydd, 1819 (1) (arrangements for the Eisteddfod at Denbigh on October 6), and writing from Segrwyd, Denbigh to Miss [?A. Lloyd (erased)], 1827 (1) (replying to the addressee's letter), David Thomas ['Dafydd Ddu Eryri'] D..., date wanting, to the Reverend John Jones, Rectory, Llanllyfni (damaged) (requesting the immediate return of John Owen of Ceidio's elegy composed and written by Goronwy Owen which the addressee has lent to Mr Richards of Llansilin, with a note from John Jones to the Reverend D. Richards), four bidding letters (David Lloyd and Gwen Saunders, Lampeter, 1807, Richard Dodd and Elizabeth Richards, Carmarthen, 1827, with a specimen of the handwriting of Alcwyn Caryni Evans when he was six years old, 1835, William Lewis and Eliza Thomas, Carmarthen, 1840, and Thomas Thomas and Eliza Evans, Carmarthen, 1848), A. Heber, place and year not given, to her Aunt Cotton (a farewell message on quitting England), and 'The Peteggree of Cernioge' in the autograph of David Jones, Trefriw, written on the back of a broadside (Trefriw, Argraphwyd gan Dafydd Jones) relating to stray sheep and beginning 'Mae Mr Lloyd o Hafodunos ...'.

A small notebook containing 'penillion telyn' and other verses, some to be sung to the airs 'Lili Lon', 'Nos Galan', and 'Ar hyd y Nos'. Some of the verses appear in John Ceiriog Hughes: Oriau'r Hwyr. At the end of the volume the following note occurs: 'Some of the Sheets near the end of your (my) copy are out of place. D. Parry'. An inscription on the inside upper cover suggests that the notebook was originally intended as an account book of Messrs Reed & Owens with Messrs Whitney and Wilson, Barton Street, Liverpool.

A composite manuscript in the hand of D. Silvan Evans containing 'Penillion', numbered 83-93, being a continuation of the series ending on page 111 of Ysten Sioned (Aberystwyth, 1882), and inscribed 'sent off to 89 (inclusive) Dec. 4, 1883' (no. 93 taken from the Oswestry Advertizer, 29 November 1882), together with one additional unnumbered stanza ('The two last line [sic] by D. S. E.'); some Welsh dictionary material, in the form of 'cywydd' couplets and other quotations, illustrating the use of words beginning mainly with the letter C ; and transcripts of free metre poetry by Dafydd o'r Nant and Syr Huw Dafydd ('O Gelli Gaer').

'Periglor Wakefield', a Welsh translation by 'Edeyrn Dafod Aur' [probably the Reverend J. Myrddin Thomas (1838-1914), Mold] for the Wrexham Eisteddfod, 1876, of The Vicar of Wakefield by Oliver Goldsmith. With the translation is a letter, 1876, from 'Edeyrn Davod Aur' to the adjudicator. Also included are some sheets of a draft copy with poetry, extracts transcribed in another hand from Y Gwyliedydd, 1829-30, and a fragment in yet another hand referring to the discovery of an urnfield in the parish of Llanfachraith [sic, Merionethshire], 1875.

A notebook probably in the autograph of the Reverend Evan Gurnos Jones ('Gurnos'; 1840-1903) containing press cuttings giving the substance of an address by J. B. Gough at a temperance meeting in Cardiff, pasted over part of a poem (written in pencil) entitled 'Merch Cae'r Melwr (Rhiangerdd)'; 'Nodiadau or Awdl y Beibl' [cf. the explanatory notes printed at the end of Awdl y Beibl, buddugol yn Eisteddfod Freiniol Bangor, 1874 (Caernarfon: H. Humphreys, [1875])]; verses in pencil headed 'Harri Bach Plas Llangefni'; and an outline of a lecture on temperance; etc. At the reverse end are more press cuttings and notes on temperance and 'englynion' between 'Gurnos' and [T. E. Watkins] 'Eiddil Ifor'.

A notebook designated 'Copy No. 2' containing brief accounts of Nefyn and Tre'r Ceiri, with notes on Capel Odo, Bettws, Cappel [sic] Angelog, Eglwys Fair and Capel Ergan, etc. At the reverse end is a record of the sermon texts of various preachers at Tremadog chapel, 1809-37 ('Coflyfr o'r Testynau yn Nghapel Tremadog' - the exact dates are not given, only the year), followed by items of poetry including 'Awdl ar Brydferthwch' by [John Edwards] 'Eos Glan Twrch' and 'Awdl ar ddyfodiad teulu Tudur i Orsedd Prydain' by 'Owain Cyfeiliog, Bryn yr Awen, Gorphenaf 15, 1821'. The hand is probably that of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') throughout.

An early nineteenth century manuscript, in three hands, containing miscellaneous poetry. The titles include ['Ayron's vale'] (two copies), 'On the death of admiral lord Nelson', 'On the death of the right honorable William Pitt', 'Hymn', 'Ode to Christmas day', 'A Father's advice to his son: an elegy', 'Edgar and Emma A legendary tale', 'Edward and Laura A tale', 'Epitaph', 'Sequal [sic] to the tale of Edward & Laura', 'The Suppliant', 'Cerdd i fari Merch Morgan' by Taliesin Lloyd, 'On A little favorite Dog', 'The Lassie's Lament', etc.: with one exception, the poems are anonymous.

A notebook with clasp used as a commonplace-book by John Peter ('Ioan Pedr') c. 1851-56. The contents include 'englynion' headed 'Cyngor Goronwy Owain i Ellis y Cowper', verses entitled 'L'antienne Nationale' with a Welsh translation, the Lord's Prayer written in several languages, items of verse by [Thomas Edwards] 'Twm o'r Nant', [Walter Davies] 'Gwallter Mechain', [Elis Roberts] Ellis Cowper [sic], [Owen Griffith] Y. Meirion, Huw Morys, Glyn Ceiriog and R. Davis, Nantglyn 'y teiliwr', etc., 'Traddiad [sic] o hanes Gwr Caer-Gai Llanuwchlyn', translations into Welsh of extracts from Rousseau, Le Sage, Pascal, Descartes, etc., observations entitled 'Taith "o'm hamgylch fy hunan", vocabularies and grammatical notes.

A composite volume from the collection of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') written in several hands of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and comprising ten main sections: (I) The first section (pp. 1-121 and some unnumbered items) contains poetry by Tomas Edwards Nant, S[ion] Owen, [David Owen] 'Dewi Wyn Eifion' [sic] and (mainly) Robert Williams ('Robert ap Gwilym Ddu'), some possibly in his autograph. Other items include a list of books ('Catalek of all ye books that I Have'), some accounts headed 'Cost Capel garn talwyd' and 'heb Daly am Capel garn', observations entitled 'Lwybr Dyn neu Ysdyriaethau ar bedair rhan oes Dyn' by Robert Williams, a letter, 1845, from Ellis Owen, Cefn y Meusydd, to Mr Robert Williams, Bard, Bettws fawr, Llanystumdwy, containing verses by Robert ab Gwilym Ddu entitled 'Pererindod o'r Aipht i Ganaan; and a list of poems by ['Robert ap Gwilym Ddu']. There are also some press cuttings and other additions by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'). (Ii) A memoir of David Owen ('Dewi Wyn o Eifion') by and in the autograph of John Thomas ('Siôn Wyn o Eifion'). (Iii) Miscellaneous items including 'Pymtheg Llwyth Gwynedd', poetry by Huw Llwyd Cynfal, Dafydd ap Sion and y Parchedig Mr Goronwy Owen o Fôn, and draft of a letter from 'Dyngarydd' [?David Owen ('Dewi Wyn o Eifion') ] to Mr Gomer' [? for Seren Gomer ], and 'A Memorandum Book' in the autograph of John Thomas ('Siôn Wyn o Eifion') containing notes on natural history, etc. in English transcribed from various printed sources. (Iv) Notes in Welsh in the autograph of John Thomas ('Siôn Wyn o Eifion') on theological subjects including extracts from 'Patrick's Places' i.e. the work of Patrick Hamilton, followed by short accounts of Phoenicia, Palestine, Assyria, Babylon, etc. (V) An incomplete poem entitled 'Carol Plygain am Bwrcas Crist tros eu [sic] Ddyweddi ...... (Vi) Two items in the autograph of John Thomas ('Siôn Wyn o Eifion') entitled 'Cyfrifiad byr am amryw o enwau neu Sectau a ymddangosasant yn y byd' (? incomplete) and 'Ateb i rai holiadau, mewn Llythyr oddi wrth yr Ysgrifennydd at ei ewythr John Roberts', which last item includes observations by Michael Roberts on one of the questions. (Vii) This section consists of sixteen pages and one loose folio. The first fourteen pages are in the autograph of William Elias, c. 1731-44, and contain poetry by Evan ap Llywelyn Vychan (beginning wanting), D. Parry, William Elias, J. Rhydderch, Owen Griffiths and D[afydd] N[anmor]. The next two pages contain verses in English by Gr: Lloyd and the loose folio contains 'englynion', one by Moris ap Evan ap Dafydd ['Morus Dwyfech']. A note at the foot of p. 9 reads 'Oed ein harglwydd, pan dorwyd, y ffordd y mynydd Bwlch Derwin gynta, 1739, y rhan isa, ai gorphen: Mehefin 18: 1740: Wm Ellias, a Griffith Davidd o fodychen, overseers', and there is a recipe for making ink on p. 10. (Viii) 'Englynion' by Edward Charles and a number of Welsh hymns (author's name not given). (Ix) This section is in the autograph of John Roberts [?'Siôn Lleyn'], 1767, and contains poetry by Roger Thomley, Michel Prichiard, Sion Thomas Bod-edern, Gwen Arthur, William Elias, Owen Griffith, John Philip, John Roberts, Hugh Roberts, Thomas Jones, Rich[ar]d Parry niwbwrch, ? W. Ell... and John Rogar [sic]. (X) Veterinary and other recipes, mainly in Welsh.
