Corrections

The file comprises groups of manuscript corrections by David Jones to the first and second edition of The Anathemata, including corrections to the second edition, dated 1955 (f. 1); lists of corrections and notes (ff. 2-12, 13-14) a letter to Harman Grisewood, dated 1952 who was reviewing the book for the Dublin Review, with a list of corrections (ff. 15-27); a list of corrections to the first edition, dated 1953 (ff. 28-42); lists of corrections (ff. 43-47); and lists of corrections and other notes concerning the printed text, dated 1952-1953, including a letter to Morley Kennedy, 1952, with a list of people to whom David Jones wanted review copies to be sent (ff. 48-69).

The file comprises four sheets of corrections in David Jones's handwriting, page proofs corrected by him, and letter from the editor, Harman Grisewood, to David Jones about the content of the volume, dated 22 July 1958.

The file comprises a letter from René Hague to David Jones, [May 1937] relating to the In Parenthesis proofs (possibly No. 11); a letter from Coutts bank to Harman Grisewood, 1976, relating to the manuscripts of David Jones which were deposited there, and a carbon copy of a letter from René Hague to Harman Grisewood, 1976, discussing the In Parenthesis manuscripts and proofs.

Correspondence

David Jones was a prolific letter writer, and his correspondents were multifarious. He was part of a circle of young Catholic intellectuals, and was connected with artistic and literary circles, as well as a more aristocratic circle. He would often write many drafts of a letter before completing it, especially when writing to the press or to a scholar or critic. The correspondence deals with matters relating to religion, art, literature, history, Wales and more personal matters. -- The group comprises letters to David Jones from friends, acquaintances, publishers and art galleries; drafts letters from David Jones to friends, draft letters to the editors of newspapers; and copies of letters published in Dai Greatcoat : a self-portrait of David Jones in his letters, edited by René Hague.

The file comprises mainly copies of letters from René Hague relating to the publication of The Roman Quarry, 1980-1981, with letters to René Hague from William Cookson (Agenda Publishers), Catharine Carver, Harman Grisewood, and Rosemary Goad (Faber and Faber Ltd.). There is also a manuscript page of notes by David Jones entitled 'Keep for Judas'.

The file comprises two sheets of David Jones manuscript, a letter from René Hague to David Jones, and a letter to René Hague from Nicolete [Gray], 1978, relating to David Jones. The file includes correspondence about the Commentary mainly between René Hague and Christopher Skelton of the Skelton Press, with letters to René Hague from William Blissett and others, 1977. There are reviews of the Commentary by Kathleen Raine, Harman Grisewood, and Hugh McKinley, 1978, and numerous prints of a portrait by Eric Gill of David Jones in 1921.

The file contains a manuscript draft of an autobiographical piece, relating to David Jones's childhood beliefs, entitled 'Crucifixis etiam pro nobis: sub Pontio Pilatus passus', with also an inscription 'Bonum et ens convertuntur'.

Dai Greatcoat

The group comprises material collected by René Hague while editing Dai Greatcoat : a self-portrait of David Jones in his letters, (London : Faber and Faber, 1980), a collection of letters to H. S. (Jim) Ede, Harman Grisewood, T. F. (Tom) Burns, and René Hague. There are copies of letters from David Jones to them and others, and also biographical material, setting copies, and other material relating to the publication. They have been arranged into two groups and listed by Harman Grisewood.

The file comprises a typescript text of the first two chapters of David Blamires's study, David Jones: Artist and Writer (Manchester, 1971), together with a bibliography of works by David Jones and of critical studies of his work. A covering letter from the author is dated 30 Dec. 1966. A few marginal remarks have been added by David Jones to the text, together with a number of items to the bibliography.

'David Jones, Writer and Artist'

The file comprises a notebook containing a manuscript draft of the greater part of Harman Grisewood's annual lecture for 1965 of the BBC in Wales (broadcast in 1966 and published by the BBC, London), 'David Jones, Writer and Artist', together with a sheet of paper containing a copy in David Jones's hand of passages altered by him. There is also a note by Harman Grisewood concerning this item.

The file comprises a typescript copy of an article by Eric Gill entitled 'David Jones', corrected and signed by the author. This article was originally published in Artwork, no. 23 (Autumn 1930), pp. 171-7, and was reprinted in a volume of essays by Eric Gill entitled In a Strange Land (London, 1944), pp. 63-9, and subsequently in Essays by Eric Gill (London, 1947), pp. 147-53.
