Pedigree of Thomas Morgan (d. 1603) of Tredegar, traced from [Gwrtheyrn] and William the Conqueror, with thirty-four coats of arms, all emblazoned and painted, probably in the hand of Hopcyn ab Einion of Brecon (fl. 17 cent, first ¼), and continued by a later hand to include the pedigree and achievement of Sir William Morgan (d. 1653).

Deeds, 1815-1931, relating to the manor of Llanfihangel Talyllyn and other properties in Brecknockshire, together with a court book, 1859-1908, of the manor of Llanfihangel Talyllyn; notebooks and exercise books, containing notes on historical, genealogical, and heraldic material mainly about the town and county of Brecon, taken from various printed and manuscript sources; notes and sketches relating to the armorial bearings of Brecknockshire families, and extensive transcripts of parish registers and of monumental inscriptions; a file of typescript notes concerning the Breconshire Agricultural Society; some notes in the hand of John Lloyd compiled in pursuance of his historical researches; a file of notes, transcripts, and correspondence relating to the parish of Llanfeugan; a manuscript volume, compiled c. 1880, of transcripts of inscriptions, sometimes with additional notes and sketches, of tablets and monuments in Brecknockshire churches and a few Nonconformist chapels, drawings of archaeological remains, etc.; a further file of transcripts of monumental inscriptions in several Breconshire churches and churchyards; a scrap- book of newspaper cuttings relating to the Turco-Greek war of 1897; and a group of eleven deeds, mainly of Brecknockshire interest, 17th-19th cent.

A collection which includes correspondence; transcripts of manuscripts and of poetry; biographical material relating to historical Welsh figures; copies of material relating to the manors of Machen and Abercarn; and a translation by Reynolds of Act III, Scene 2 of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. Also included are translations from German literature by Elsa Irene Reynolds and a volume of letters to Jonathan Reynolds ('Nathan Dyfed').

These manuscripts form part of the Flintshire Historical Collection once in the possession of Henry Taylor (1845-1927), who was Town Clerk of Flint and whose best-known work is Historic Notices ... of the Borough and County-Town of Flint ..., published 1888. The collection comprises material largely of Flint and Flintshire interest and includes historical material, transcripts of documents and extracts from parish registers, minutes of borough meetings, pedigrees relating to notable families of the district, papers relating to parliamentary elections, correspondence, etc.

A volume containing a manuscript, possibly holograph, of a critical account of some congregations in Massachusetts, written in about 1649 by the Rev. Richard Sadler, then of Whixall, parish of Prees, Shropshire (pp. 3-32); together with a short treatise on heraldry, with an alphabetically-arranged blazon of English arms; and an incomplete treatise on fifteen common herbs and their qualities.

Copies of the Queen's instructions to Henry, Earl of Pembroke, Lord President of the Council in Wales and the Marches, 1586; the commission of the lieutenancy of Wales and the Marches to Henry, Earl of Pembroke, March 22, 1600, with power to make deputations to persons named in the commission for the different counties within the lieutenancy; a petition by six members of the Privy Council to the Lord Keeper to renew the commission of lieutenancy for Merioneth and to leave out the names of John Lewys Owen and Cadwalader ap Ris, who had been arraigned before the Court of Star Chamber for misdemeanours, and to appoint Griffith Vaughan and Robert Lloyd to be deputies for the Earl of Pembroke for that county; a Privy Council letter to the same effect covering a renewed commission to the Earl of Pembroke, March 31, 1600, with a list of justices of the peace for Merioneth; and orders for the reformation of the Court of the Marches, 1577.

A collection which includes George Owen's Description of Wales, Arms of Pembrokeshire Families, and Genealogical Notes, John Jones's History of Brecknock, and William Sargeant's Glamorganshire Collectanea; also a note on Owen's map of Pembrokeshire by John Browne.

Manuscripts and papers, [1601x1936], relating to the literary activities of David Jones (Dewi Fardd) and particularly to his printing business at Trefriw. The collection includes personal and business correspondence of family members of David Jones, and papers of Gwilym Cowlyd, Ieuan Glan Geirionydd, Gwilym Hiraethog and other literary figures.

Papers, [1600x1924], mostly of or relating to Robert Ellis (Cynddelw), with some in the hand of Dr Robert Ellis, his son. The material includes a draft autobiography of Robert Ellis; an introduction written for a collection of Ellis's work under the proposed title Mwyar Berwyn; a draft of part of the first chapter of a biography of John Williams, Baptist minister (Llangollen, 1871); notes for Esboniad ar y Testament Newydd Cyfrol III (Llangollenn, 1878); poetry; diaries, 1840-1866; correspondence, 1833-1875; sermons; lectures; essays; adjudications at eisteddfodau, [1860x1875]; and miscellaneous notes, transcripts and extracts. The collection also includes letters, 1835-1856, of John Williams, Baptist minister; a rental, 1725-1726, of the estate of Watkin Williams Wynn; commonplace books of John Davies, Pentrefoelas, Griffith Williams (Gutyn Peris) and others, together with further collections of miscellany in seventeenth and eighteenth century hands; and autograph sermons by Christmas Evans.

Two volumes made up of page-proofs of the 1620 edition of the Welsh Bible (Y Bibl Cyssegr-lan ..., Llundain: Bonham Norton a John Bill, 1620). The lettering on the spine, 'Bibl y Dr Morgan', is inaccurate as the 1620 edition is Bishop Richard Parry's revision of Bishop William Morgan's Bible (1588). Most of the pages are printed on one side of the leaf only. Some of the manuscript corrections are almost certainly in the hand of Dr. John Davies of Mallwyd. Most of the corrections which were not incorporated in the published edition correspond with the list of errata published c. 1672 [?by Bishop George Griffith] as Some omissions and corrections in the British translation of the Bible. A note in manuscript on the reverse side of the first leaf of Genesis is in the autograph of [Rowland Lewis of Mallwyd] (see The National Library of Wales Journal, IX, pp. 495 and Plate IX, 9). The second volume contains a few Welsh prayers written in a contemporary hand, one near the middle of the book of Ezekiel (sig. Ggg6), the others at the beginning of the New Testament.

An early seventeenth century manuscript containing the first book of the 'Description of Penbrokeshire' by George Owen of Henllys. The date at the beginning of the text, following the list of contents, is 'Lune 13 Decembr' 1602' and at the end is the inscription 'finis 18 Maij 1603' followed by 'Opus iij Mensu[m] Magna per Intervalla'. There are a number of directions to the copyist and Harleian MS 6250, the text edited by Henry Owen in the Cymmrodorion Record Series, No. I (1892), is probably a fair-copy of the present manuscript. There are also marks indicating that George Owen checked the copy in late July-August 1603. Comparison with the text edited by Henry Owen shows that a few sections (underlined or crossed out, etc.) in the present manuscript have been omitted in Harleian MS 6250, viz. the passage in chapter 1 which is quoted by Henry Owen on p. 239 of his edition, n. 1, a paragraph on ff. 23 verso-24 recto (anc. 13 verso- 14 recto) of the present manuscript beginning 'Giraldus Cambrensis writinge of the nature of the people of this Countrye hath these wordes', a list of fish on ff. 65 verso-66 verso (anc. 56 verso-57 verso), and a section in chapter 21, ff. 95 verso- 96 verso (anc. 87 verso-88 verso), beginning '& gave them his said deputies his absolute power to execute all thinges in his absens . . . by the kinges maties [sic] that nowe is kinge James kinge of England Scotland Fraunce & Ireland &c' (cf. Henry Owen, op. cit., p. 167, n. 2). Loose inside is a description of the manuscript by 'H.G .' [? Henry Gough], 19 Dec. 1871.

An autograph Latin poem (8 lines) by Edward Lord Herbert of Cherbury and Castleisland, written on the end-paper (p. 818) of his copy of Antonio de Herrara, Tercera parte de la historia general del mvndo ... (Madrid: por Alonso Martin de Balboa, 1612). The poem begins 'Discurrens dubiae placidus, compendia vitae' and is signed 'E. H: 12. Sept. 1612'. Published posthumously with the title 'For a Dyal' and with some textual differences in Occasional verse of Edward Lord Herbert, baron of Cherbery and Castle-Island, deceased in August, 1648 (London, 1665).

A volume comprising Michael Drayton's Poly-Olbion, Part 1 (London, 1622, STC 7228, ESTC S121639), and Part 2 (London, 1622, STC 7229 or 7230, ESTC S121637 or S121634), extensively annotated, 1755, by the Welsh polymath Lewis Morris.
Part 1 appears to be the 1622 edition, omitting however that version's letterpress title page and binding the index after Part 2 (now pp. 169-176); the title page of Part 2 is also missing. Morris's annotations consist of marginal notes and occasional footnotes glossing the printed text, together with underlining of text and manicules. The annotations are mostly confined to the introduction by John Selden and the notes (or 'Illustrations') supplied by him to each song in Part 1 (pp. xi-xvi, 15-21, 34-36, 50-52, 54, 66-74, 83-85, 95-99, 108-110, 122-132, 143-156, 164-169, 182-189, 191, 193-194, 209-210, 224-225, 234-235, 244, 253-256, 267-272, 274-279, 281, 300-303). There are further annotations by Morris to Drayton's songs and elsewhere (Part 1, pp. i-iii, v, vii, ix-x, 1, 4, 29, 83, 87-89, 91, 95, 102-103, 158, 213, 250, 283, 295-297; Part 2, pp. i, iii-iv, 171). Morris's notes, partly in Welsh, mainly concern the Welsh language and Welsh and Ancient British history; he has also emended the text in line with the corrections listed in the errata (Part 1, p. xx).

'A catalogue of all the Earles of Penbroke that have been sythence the Conquest in order as they succeeded…', a volume of genealogy compiled, [?1624], in the hand of the herald George Owen the younger (1595-1665), based on the work of his father George Owen of Henllys (1552-1613), and presented to their kinsman William Herbert, 3rd Earl of Pembroke.
George Owen the elder's original intention was to catalogue the earls 'with their proper coat armour' and his son's stated aim (f. 9 recto-verso) was to complete his father's work. The main text (ff. 11-15 and 16-44 rectos only) is mostly that of George Owen of Henllys's 'Catalogue of all the Earles of Penbroke' (1601x1603) (later incorporated by him into chapter 2 of the Description of Pembrokeshire: see George Owen of Henllys, The Description of Penbrokshire, ed. by Henry Owen, 4 vols (London, 1892-1936), I (1892), 14-33; and B. G. Charles, George Owen of Henllys: A Welsh Elizabethan (Aberystwyth, 1973), pp. 160-1). The final two paragraphs (ff. 42, 43, 44), relating to the second and third earls, continue the narrative to about 1624 and were presumably written by George Owen the younger. Each section begins with a decorated initial of varying height. The pedigree, by George Owen the younger (ff. 15 verso-43 verso, versos only), runs in parallel with the main text and traces the descent of William Herbert, in relation to the Earls of Pembroke of the various previous creations only. It is arranged in two columns, with the earls represented in the left hand column and other family shown on the right, and includes fifty-eight coats of arms, fully emblazoned and painted. Also included is the full armorial achievement of William Herbert (f. 8 verso) and the scribe's dedicatory address to Herbert (ff. 9-10). There are marginal notes in pencil, [?19 cent.], on ff. 8 verso and 9 verso (erased). For George Owen the younger see H.
