A composite volume from the library of Morris Davies (1796-1876), Bangor containing Thomas Charles, Catecism Byr ... (Bala, 1808); Owen Jones, Arweinydd i Wybodaeth neu, Y Catecism Cyntaf i Hen Bobl a'r Ail i Bobl Ieuaingc. (Bala, 1829); Rheolau a Dibenion yr Ysgol Sabbothol yn Mon ... (Bala, 1820); John Hughes, Hymnau I'w canu yn yr Ysgolion Sabbothol ... (Bala, 1821); and an incomplete glossary in the hand of Morris Davies of words (Abba - Pen-bleth) extracted apparently from Thomas Charles, Geiriadur Ysgrythyrol (Bala, 1805). At the end of the volume are pencil drawings, partly coloured, of persons representing M[argaret] A[nn] Parry, M. A. Jones etc.

A composite volume containing a copy (title-page wanting) of [Walter Davies, Rhyddid: traethawd a ennillodd ariandlws Cymdeithas y Gwyneddigion ar ei thestun i eisteddfod Llanelwy ... 1790 (Llundain, 1791)] and also Geirlyfr Ysgrythyrol (88 pp., Aaron - Barnu) [?1801], the original Part I (later withdrawn) of the work expanded by Thomas Charles and issued as Geiriadur Ysgrythyrol ... y llyfr cyntaf (1805). At the end of the volume are wrappers of [George Lewis], Esponiad ar y Testament Newydd, Rhif 1. (Caerlleon, [1800]) containing an advertisement for the Geirlyfr Ysgrythyrol, and there is also a cutting from Y Goleuad, [4 Chwef. 1871] containing a long letter from Morris Davies on the subject of 'Geirlyfr Ysgrythyrol John Roberts a Geiriadur Ysgrythyrol Charles'. At the beginning of the volume are (?) wrappers of Esponiad ar y Testament Newydd, Rhifyn XVII (Gwrecsam: Ioan Painter), with part of a sermon in manuscript, and Rhifyn XX (Bala, R. Saunderson), each with a list of books published by [Dr] G[eorge] Lewis. A note in the autograph of 'Morris Davies, Portmadoc' occurs on the first page of the Geirlyfr Ysgrythyrol.

A manuscript of Morris Davies, Bangor containing a Welsh translation of an imperfect autobiography of Hugh Jones ('Erfyl'; 1789-1858) and a continuation of the biography by the scribe incorporating extracts from the diaries of Hugh Jones for the period 1820-3. The text represents pp. 281-94 of the biography of 'Erfyl' which appeared in Y Traethodydd, 1876. At the end of the volume is a short section entitled 'Miscellaneous' containing notes (1830) on such phrases as 'His Welsh blood is up', 'As long as a Welsh pedigree', 'Môn mam Cymru', etc. The English autobiography is in NLW MS 9029 and the four diaries in NLW MS 9024-7.

An uncovered home-made notebook of Morris Davies, Portmadoc (afterwards of Bangor) containing a synopsis of an essay on the topography of the Bible ('Daiaryddiaeth Ysgrythyrol') and a catechism ('Holwyddoreg') in verse by R. D. M. (published in Cronicl yr Oes, Ebrill 1836). The volume is made up of holograph letters, of which some are addressed, and probably all are written, to Morris Davies from D. Breese, Pwllheli, 1841 (a request for assistance for Mr. Row[lands]), Dav[id] W. Breese, Bron Eryri, etc., 1844 and undated (2) (the writer's journey to Carmarthen, personal, an offer to sell his 'Chambers's Information' [for the People] to the Portmadoc Reading Society), Messrs Parry & Son, Chester, [18]46 (an order by the recipient), J. Williams, T. Bwlch, [? John Williams, Tu hwnt i'r bwlch] undated (thanks for an account, a request for assistance), John Jones, Tremadoc, 1845-7 (2) (a request to cancel a preaching service, a request for the services of a preacher) and Griff. Jones, P[ort] Madoc, undated (2) (a request for letters to be sent, personal, suggests recipient cancels the afternoon school to go to Penmorfa fair to see his cousin and as many of the Guardians as would be there); a statement of quarterly tuition fees due from H. Hughes, in respect of Love Hughes and Llewelyn Hughes, to the Committee of the Tre and Port Madoc British School, 1846-7; twelve verses by 'Yr hen gyfaill' entitled 'Deuddeg Penill ar Farwolaeth Mr Morris Davies' (1876).

(I) A home-made notebook containing material compiled and collected by Morris Davies, Bangor towards his Cofiant Ann Griffiths ... (Dinbych, 1865). The material consists mainly of an incomplete draft biography and press cuttings, with an interleaved copy of John Hughes: Cofiant Mrs Ann Griffiths ... (Llanfyllin, 1847). The volume is made up of blank forms of claims by the Official Assignee, County Court Office, on behalf of Insolvents, 185[ ]. (Ii) An incomplete draft of the manuscript of Morris Davies: Cofiant Ann Griffiths ... (Dinbych, 1865), with copious revisions and suggestions by J[ohn] J[ones, Llanfyllin]. The text corresponds fairly closely to pp. 9-89 of the published biography.

(I) Miscellanea of Morris Davies. Miscellaneous scraps accumulated by Morris Davies, Bangor, including manuscript hymns and cuttings from printed hymn books; verses (incomplete?) on the death of William Oliver, Dolgoed, Rhydfendigaid (died 1828), a short biography by Gwen Evans of Francis Evans (1830-76), printer, Pwllheli, and short notes on other Pwllheli printers; cuttings of press contributions by M[orris] D[avies] on hymnology; extracts from William Rowlands ('Gwilym Lleyn'): Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry (Llanidloes, 1869), etc. (Ii) Llythyrau Morris Davies, etc. Eleven letters, 1868-76, from Morris Davies, Upper Bangor to the Reverend D. Silvan Evans at Llan ym Mawddwy and Llanwrin. The letters relate almost entirely to bibliographical matters and there are references to the recipient's edition of William Rowlands ('Gwilym Lleyn'): Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry (Llanidloes, 1869), to the writer's study of hymnology and to his collection of the works of Daniel Rowland, Llangeithio. A mass of bibliographical notes, presumably enclosed with the letters, are bound in at the end of the volume. One of these notes is written on the dorse of a printed notice of a meeting of the committee of Bangor British School, 1855.

A volume containing what appears to be the original manuscript of Casgliad o Salmau a hymnau at wasanaeth yr addoliad cyhoedd, ac ymarger neilltuedig ... gan Morris Davies, Llanfyllin (Bala: Robert Saunderson, 1832). The list of errata ('Gwallau') is identical with that contained in the printed volume, but the following note occurs in the margin of the subject index ('Mynegai o'r prif Faterion cynnwysedig yn y Psalmau a'r Hymnau yn y casgliad hwn'): 'Please to alter the figures to correspond with the printed Book'. The references to the supplement '(Att[odiad]'), however, do not correspond to the 1832 edition or, in every case, to the second edition, which is fuller. The numbers in the index of first lines refer to the pages in the manuscript volume.

The tune book of David Lewis, 1844, containing hymn-tunes by himself and by John Edwards, Penderlwyn, Morris Davies, Lewis Lewis, T[homas] Jarman, T. Jones, Trallwm, Brycheiniog and W. Griffith. Among the tunes by David Lewis is one for an 'englyn unodl union'.

A small scrap book [of Morris Davies, Bangor] containing cuttings of English poetry by David Williams Breeze, Portmadoc, 1844, and others; articles entitled 'Welsh Literature' (containing 'A biographical memoir of Dr John Davies of Mallwyd') and 'Hen Emynwyr' (Dafydd William, Llandeilo Fach, and Thomas Williams, Bethesda'r Fro), book reviews, etc. Sources of some of the cuttings are noted as follows: Bangor Chronicle [?North Wales Chronicle], Carnarvon Herald [Carnarvon and Denbigh Herald], Herald Cymraeg, Y Goleuad, Baner Cymru and Christian World. The volume was originally used by Jane Davies, Upper Bangor to record English poetry, 1832-5, and lists of mottoes of titled and landed families. The spine is lettered 'Original Poetry'.

(I) A home-made notebook of Morris Davies of Bangor (1796-1876), author, hymnologist and musician, containing material towards a biography of the Reverend Peter Williams (1723-96) and draft resolutions of a committee of Tabernacle Calvinistic Methodist Church, Bangor, 1851-2 (with a reference to the proposed erection of 'Capel Upper Bangor' i.e. Twr-gwyn Chapel). The volume is made up of a variety of printed and manuscript sheets, including an undated printed appeal for subscriptions towards the presentation of his own portrait to Ebenezer Thomas ('Eben Fardd'), an undated printed prospectus of E. Williams, milliner and dress maker, High Street, Bangor; a notice of a meeting of the Provisional Directors of the Rhiw Bach Slate Quarries Company, 1853; a letter from the Reverend John Hughes, Liverpool to M[orris] Davies, 1848 (enclosing books, the possible re-publication of a book of hymns); a printed prospectus of Samuel Roberts, Bangor Agency, China Tea Company, 1852; a letter from Ebenezer M. A notebook in the hand of Morris Davies, Bangor containing 'Select Extracts' from printed sources (e.g. the introduction to W. Williams: Caniadau y rhai sydd ar y Môr o Wydr (3ydd arg., 1764); poetry in strict and free metres by [John Jones] 'Tegid', [Daniel Evans] 'Daniel Ddu o Geredigion', Huw Morus, [Thomas Edwards] 'Caerfallwch', Rice Jones [o'r Blaenau] and [David Richards] 'Dafydd Ionawr'; an account of 'The Musical Idiot' in the Salpêtrière at Paris; extracts from William Owen-Pughe: Coll-Gwynfa (Llundain, 1819); and metrical proverbs by 'Richard (Risiart) Dlawd'.

There are also two letters from [Sir] C[harles] B[eaumont] Phipps, Windsor Castle, for H.M. The Queen, to Charles Hughes, publisher, Wrexham, 1863.
Among the subjects discussed, apart from 'Owain Alaw's musical interests and the dedication of his publications, are 'Gwallter Mechain's letters (by Jane Davies) and the proposed biography of Hugh Jones ('Erfyl) (by Morris Davies). Also included among the letters is a printed song - 'The Welcome Home, sung by the children of the Rhos-y-Medre and Rhosllanerchrugog National Schools on the occasion of the birth of an heiress to the noble House of Wynnstay', 1865.
