Letters received by Albert Owen Evans in connection with his work and writings in preparation for the tercentenary celebration, 1924, of the death of Edmwnd Prys, translator of the metrical psalms into Welsh, with copies of programmes, of addresses and sermons delivered on the occasion of the tercentenary, and of articles and booklets prepared by A. O. Evans.

One of four volumes comprising three hundred and sixty-four autograph letters and copies and drafts of letters of the period 1787-1930. The two main groups among them are those addressed to 'Nefydd' and Daniel Jones, but there are also two very much smaller groups of letters to Benjamin Jones ('P. A. Môn') and Benjamin Thomas, Baptist minister at Culmstock, Devon, and nephew of Joshua Thomas, Leominster. They are generally of personal, religious, or Baptist interest, although a number of letters addressed to 'Nefydd ' relate also to his educational activities. -- Among the subjects discussed in MSS 7163-6 are British Schools at Penmorfa, Llandygwydd, Devynnock, Llandilo, Abertillery, Llantrisant, Cwmdare, and Five Roads, Llanelly, and appeals for financial assistance for the Baptist churches at Caernarvon, Tenby, Cwmsarnddu, Llanfyllin, and Stanhope Street, Liverpool. Letters from America are chiefly of a denominational character. David Thomas, Llwyn, discusses the reaction in Carmarthenshire to the French Revolution and refers to meetings held at Carmarthen and Llandovery to pledge loyalty to the Government and to burn an effigy of Tom Paine. A book of sermons written in 1610. A receipt by John Jones, clerk, to 'Mr Morgan', vicar of Llanhasaph [i.e. Llanasa], 8 December 9 James I [1611], entered in the book suggests that it belonged to Evan Morgan, nephew of Bishop William Morgan. There are tithe and building accounts in the original hand. Later entries include lists of children of the Corwen and Gwyddelwern districts attending a local school, medical recipes and a copy of a brief on behalf of John Jones of Aberdaron, miller. In the middle of the eighteenth century the manuscript belonged to Evan Thomas, Cwmhwylfod.

A manuscript in the hand of Samuel Williams (c. 1660 - c. 1722), vicar of Llandyfriog, Cardiganshire, containing forty-four sermons translated from or based on several authors e.g. [Simon] Patrick [successively bishop of Chichester and of Ely], [Nicholas] Brady [the elder], [Thomas] Adams, [Friedrich] Spanheim, [George] Smalridge [bishop of Bristol], [Theophilus] Dorrington, Cl[ement] Ellis, [Robert] Bragge [dissenting minister], etc. There is a list of contents at the beginning of the volume, and hymns ('Myfi yw'r Adgyfodiad mawr...', etc.) and metrical psalms by [Edmwnd Prys and] William Middleton have been written on the fly-leaves and in blank spaces at the end of some of the sermons. There are some additions, among them the Lord's Prayer, in the hand of the scribe's son, Moses Williams (1685-1742), vicar of Defynnog. Entries on the back of one of the original covers, also in the hand of Moses Williams, indicate that some of the sermons were preached at Dyvynog [Defynnog] and Cap[el] Ill[t]ud during the years 1728-30.

An eighteenth century manuscript consisting of miscellaneous material in the hand of the Reverend Edward Gamage [rector of the parish of St. Athan, co. Glamorgan, 1717-1734] with additions in later eighteenth century hands (see TLLM, tt. 106-07; IM, t. 309; and IMCY, tt. 58-60, 68, 171). In Edward Gamage's own hand are transcripts of Welsh strict- and free-metre poems by Thomas Morgan 'o Dilla garw', Hopkin y Gwaedd 'o Fargam', Rob. Tho[ma]s 'o Sant y Bryd', Thomas Leyshon o'r Prysg', Miles W[illia]m, Thomas W[ilia]m 'o Dregolwyn', Thomas Llewelyn, vicar of Llancarvan, Dafydd Thomas 'o blwyf y Bettws', and Llewelyn ab Iefan, a copy of a letter in Welsh, 23 November 1726, from the said Edward Gamage himself from Sant Athan, to Llewelyn ab Iefan of the parish of Llangrallo [co. Glamorgan], poet, in reply to a request for genealogical information relating to the Stradling family, and, at the reverse end of the volume, 'A Continuation of ye Exposition of ye Church Catechism for ye use of ye Children of ye Parish of Lantwitt Major by E. Gamage, Lecturer and Catechist there', a recipe for a dog bite, and ? sermon notes. Later additions to the volume include transcripts of three stanzas of Welsh verse, one being by Ph'p Morgan b'r Sarnfawr' and one by his daughter Eleanor, miscellaneous English verse some dated 1768, and a few financial items. Four imperfect, printed leaves from a ? seventeenth century edition of metrical psalms with prayers for use in private houses have been bound in at the end of the volume.

A manuscript of John Roberts ('Ieuan Gwyllt') used originally as a register of the pupils who enrolled in his school at Nanteos Arms [Capel Seion, near Aberystwyth] from its foundation on 12 June to 1 July 1839. The volume was subsequently used, [c. 1839-1840], to record hymn-tunes, hymns, metrical psalms, etc., by 'Ieuan Gwyllt', and notes of sermons by John Hughes, Pontrobert, [Thomas] Richards, Fishguard, David Howels, Thos. Evans, O. Williams, and H. Hughes, Llanrwst.
