Accumulated papers

These papers are unrelated to the Tredegar estate, having been accumulated by members of the Morgan family of Tredegar and their agents in the course of their public or private lives, or otherwise strayed into the Tredegar estate records. The bulk of the strays are client files of Henry F. W. Harries, the Brecon solicitor who acted as the agent for Tredegar's Breconshire estate (P 5/6). These files probably became mixed with the Tredegar material on the final dispersal of the Breconshire estate and the removal of the Breconshire estate records to Newport. Six other groups also all come from within the sphere of influence of the Tredegar estate, comprising the Monmouthshire commission of sewers, 1660-1792 (P 5/8), Newport assessments, 1700-1753 (P 5/7), Newport turnpike trust records, 1759-1880 (P 5/1), charity papers, 1772-1959 (P 5/2), St Woolloos rate book, 1875 (P 5/4), and Christchurch Highway Board letters received, 1880-1890 (P 5/5). The three files of Sussex vouchers, 1775-1776 (P 5/3), relate to an estate in the trusteeship of members of the Morgan family.

Rotherfield Farm (Sussex) attornment

Attornment of John Holford of Newick, Sussex, yeoman, to Charles Gould of Ealing, Middlesex, esq., for a copyhold messuage and lands called Rotherfield Farm in Newick, in the manor of Balneth. In 1753 John, lord De Lawarr (now Earl of De Lawarr) granted George Holford then of Chailey, Sussex, yeoman (John Holford's father, since dec.) a 12 year lease of the premises. Subsequently, De Lawarr mortgaged the property (among others) to King Gould of the parish of Westminster St James, Middlesex, esq. (since dec.). De Lawarr having defaulted, Charles Gould and Paston Gould of Ealing, esqs, King Gould's sons, took possession of the mortgaged property, and Paston Gould the younger son and his father's heir according to the custom of the manor, took possession of the mortgaged copyhold premises in the manor, which Charles Gould recovered by ejectment.

Langford Court estate

The series comprises papers relating to the period of Charles Gould's tenancy of the Langford Court estate. Although there is a theme to most files, whether it be papers relating to a particular subject, or papers from a particular time-span, most files also include papers that have nothing to do with that theme. This lack of care almost certainly related to the papers having no administrative value after 1802, when Sir Charles Morgan rid himself of the estate.

Corpus Christ College (University of Oxford).

Inventory

A catalogue (1861 watermark) of the collection of ancient silver gilt cups and other ornamental sideboard plate at the Friars, Newport, endorsed that the same were bequeathed by the late Octavius Morgan (d. 5 Aug. 1888) to be heirlooms with the Tredegar estate, signed by H. S. Milman, his executor.

Tredegar household records

Records relating to the management of the Tredegar household. For convenience, Lord Tredegar's private account cash books and audit books have been included here, although they apply equally to the demense and other estate interests.

Tredegar Town letting records

The Argoed lease, 1805, the Tredegar lease, 1815, the Tredegar Iron & Coal Company Ltd lease, 1881, and leases and related papers relating to properties in New Tredegar, 1879-1933.
