Two poems by Dafydd Vaughan, 'Gwir gariad' and ['Camgymeriad'], have stanzas in English and Welsh alternately, the Welsh following the English. -- As so many of the poems in the manuscript are by Dafydd Vaughan he may possibly have been the scribe. The volume has annotations by Walter Davies ('Gwallter Mechain') who has designated it 'Llyfr Ystrad Alun' and who transcribed some poems from it - see NLW MS 1658.

Records of the Morgan family of Tredegar and Ruperra, later barons and viscounts Tredegar including deeds, 14th-20th cent. of the Tredegar, Ruperra, Dderw and Palleg estates in Monmouthshire, Glamorgan and Breconshire which document much of the growth of the towns of Newport and Cardiff in the 19th century; records of the lordship of Wentlloog (Newport) and many Monmouthshire manors, some 14-16 cent., but mainly 17-19 cent.; records of the manor of Brecon and of other manors in Breconshire, 17-19 cent. including the Great Forest of Brecon; records of industrial interests, mainly coal and iron in Glamorgan and Monmouthshire, 18-20 cent.; records of the Tredegar Wharf Company from 1807; and surveys, audit books, rentals, ledgers and leases for the Monmouthshire, Glamorgan and Breconshire portions of the Tredegar estate, 18-20 cent.; papers relating to Nova Scotia and Canada, 1730-1773, mainly of Richard Phillips, Governor of Nova Scotia, 1717-1749; and rentals and leases for the Mile End and Bow estates in London, 19-20 cent.

Notebook, 1905-1907, of T. Gwynn Jones, mostly written in pencil, used by him during his stay in Egypt during the Winter of 1905-6 as a diary and for composing English poetry.
The volume contains diary entries for his voyage to Egypt, 21 October-5 November 1905 (ff. 22 verso, 23-28 rectos only), the beginning of his stay there, in Alexandria, Cairo and Helouan, 6 November-23 December 1905 (ff. 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34-37), and the return voyage, 28 April-13 May 1906 (ff. 21 verso-22). Also included are some eighteen poems in English, dated 4 December 1905-6 April 1906, mostly drafts, some crossed through or heavily revised, the majority being love poems to his wife (ff. 2 verso-5, 6, 7-17, 18-19, 20, 21). Some are published: 'The Ferry' (f. 7 recto-verso) in David Jenkins, Thomas Gwynn Jones: Cofiant (Denbigh, 1973), p. 169, 'I saw thee' (ff. 8 verso-9) in ibid., p. 109, and 'A Memory' (f. 10 verso) in the Western Mail, 30 September 1920, p. 4; while 'The Rising Sun' [published as 'Come my love'] (f. 11) and 'I will come to thee' (f. 13 verso) were set to music by Robert Bryan (both scores published 1921). Three further verses, October 1905 and February 1907, are in Welsh (ff. 23 verso-24, 37 verso). Eight pages are written in shorthand (ff. 17 verso, 24 verso-31 verso, versos only), these remain undeciphered by the cataloguer. Jones's travel book Y Mor Canoldir a'r Aifft (Caernarfon, 1912), which relates incidents recorded in the diary, such as the Coptic wedding (ff. 34-35 verso), is based mostly on his letters to his wife rather than on the present manuscript.

Papers donated in 1933 by J. C. Owen, 1859-1921, dealing with tithes, rates, rent-charges, other parish accounts and miscellaneous ecclesiastical matters in various parishes in Cardiganshire and Brecknockshire with which the donor was connected. A second donation made in 1936 (listed elsewhere) comprises papers relating to J. C. Owen's ordination, 1883; a letter and other papers concerning the church and parish of Llanafan Fawr [1910]-1911; a copy of Y Dyddiadur Methodistaidd, 1864, with manuscript entries of preaching and other engagements, disbursements, etc.; miscellaneous papers including a list of vicars of Llanafan Fawr, 1486-1883; and items relating to the work of J. C. Owen.

Accounts of tithes received, 1803-1810, and of disbursements, 1805-1816, in the parish of Llanwnnog, co. Montgomery, kept by Andrew Davies, senior, of Plas Newydd, Llanwnnog. The volume also contains memoranda concerning sheep and lambs, 1810-1815, and an account of rent due to Sir Watkin Williams Wynn of Wynnstay, 1808 (f. 39v).

A commonplace book of Robert Edwards, Tai Draw, near Bala. It contains notes on astrology, witchcraft, legerdemain, geography, natural history, Biblical history, medicinal and household recipes, arithmetical and other tables, algebraical problems, poems, and a copy of a Welsh letter written in 1722-3, by a man born and bred in America to his kindred in the Bala district.

Two charms found in Merioneth which were procured by one Thomas Thomas for the protection of himself, his family, and all his livestock against witchcraft and 'all evil diseases whatsoever.'

Notes of sermons in the autograph of Hugh Rogers, 'Beginninge 7 March, 1657', probably the 'itinerant' who served first in Monmouth and then became rector of Newtown, where some of the sermons were preached in 1658. He was 'ejected' from Newtown for 'Nonconformity' at the Restoration.

Papers, 1830-1937, of the Lewis family of Felinganol, Llanrhystud, Cardiganshire, comprising four title deeds, 1830-1865, relating to properties in the parish of Llanrhystud; letters, 1862-1930, in Welsh, relating to business and family affairs, together with poetry, some by and in the autograph of John Lewis ('Eos Glan Wyre'), including verse written on the reverse of a printed balance sheet, 1861-1862, of 'Cymdeithas Ddyngarol Llanrhystid' (Cambrian Benefit Society); probate, 1865, of the will of Margaret Morgan of Felinganol, and papers relating thereto, 1865-1906; two account books, 1865-1924, of milling, etc., at Felinganol; three account books and loose papers, 1882-1937, of Llanrhystud Baptist Chapel; and six charms, [late 19 cent.-early 20 cent.], to preserve the livestock, etc., of members of the family from witchcraft.

The archive comprises the records of Messrs J. and A. Davies, Llanidloes, including account books, 1927-1972, a bill book, 1957-1965, and a letter book, 1958-1962; and miscellaneous office records, 1872-1964, of Williams, Gittins and Tomley.
