Papers, 1825-1912, of, or acquired by, the painter Henry Clarence Whaite, including correspondence, bills and vouchers, press cuttings, exhibition catalogues and related printed material, reflecting his work as an artist and as President of both the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts and the Royal Cambrian Academy; together with papers, 1825-1862, of the Whaite family of Manchester, and papers, 1873-1913, of the artist's daughter, Lily Whaite, a member of the Gwynedd Ladies' Art Society.

Twenty-six letters to H. Clarence Whaite from Frederick Alfred Slocombe, and his nephew Shirley Slocombe. These remain uncatalogued.

A collection of additional letters, 1900-1904, to Lily Whaite from her future husband, John Harris, Vicar of Harlech. This group remains uncatalogued.

A further consignment of papers were acquired by the Library, including diaries and journals documenting all Whaite's paintings and the exhibitions they were sent to from the early 1870s onwards. This group remains uncatalogued.

The group consists of H. Clarence Whaite's personal papers, 1825-1912, comprising correspondence, 1825-1912, letter books and diaries, 1874-1912, personalia and greetings cards, 1825-1912, papers relating to art subjects of interest and collected by him, 1845-1911, and a few miscellaneous papers, 1863-1912.

Personalia

The series consists of biographical material, 1826-1912, material relating to the Whaite family, Bridge Street, Manchester, 1825-1879, and several items relating to membership of various societies to which H.Clarence Whaite belonged, 1869-1907.

Biographical material and handwritten notes

The file comprises biographical papers, 1826-1912, together with various handwritten notes, including an autobiographical piece by H. Clarence Whaite, 1878, a biographical piece on Henry Whaite after his death in 1869, a funeral sermon for Lorimer Edward Whaite, 1871, an in memoriam poem for Jane Alice Whaite, 1906, birth and marriage registration notices, 1826 and 1844, various pieces of poetry, and press cuttings announcing the death of H. Clarence Whaite, 1912.

Whaite's, Bridge St.

The file comprises papers relating to Whaite's Fine Art Gallery, Bridge St., Manchester, including exhibition catalogues 1873, 1879, with exhibition circulars, 1873-1878, a booklet entitled 'Christmas and its Customs', published at Whaite's German Fair, together with an information leaflet regarding the German Fair, and photocopies of silhouettes, [1820s-1840s]. The file also includes a press cutting, 1907, relating to the German Fair.

Membership certificates and rules

The file comprises certificates of membership to various artists' clubs and societies, together with rules, including the Brazenose Club, 1869, the Graphic Society, 1873-1875, the South Wales Art Society and Sketching Club, 1888, the Artists' Club, Tal-y-bont, Conwy, 1892, and Union Internationale des Beaux-Arts & des Lettres, 1907.

Greetings cards

The series comprises a variety of cards, some hand made, sent to H. Clarence Whaite and his family, 1855-1912, on birthdays and Christmas, and also includes in memoriam cards, calling cards and invitations to various social functions.
