A number of prisoners have been discharged on parole, owing to insufficient evidence. Armishaw's attendance for the purpose of identification is of prime importance. No less than 200 persons have left the town. His servant has been stoned in a back lane by a number of women.

Col Williams Wynn desires Constable Armishaw's presence in Llanidloes for the purpose of the identification of prisoners.

Is reluctant to allow Armishaw to leave for Llanidloes because he is the only efficient officer who can be relied upon to give effect to every order. Moreover the Metropolitan officers are quite capable of identifying the prisoners.

Powell has been arrested and is now lodged in Montgomery gaol. Would like an explanation of Capt. Burton's non-arrival. Has put two cavalry men in charge of the armoury, in place of the sergeant-major's son, whose conduct has been most indiscreet. Excellent spirit prevails among the constables.

Copy letter from G. N. Edwards, Lt 2nd Madras Cavalry, from Newtown, on behalf of Viscount Clive, to Capt. Burton, commanding the Centre Squadron, South Salopian Yeomanry. Has authorised the mayor of Welch Pool to call upon him [Capt. Burton] for a detachment of one sergeant and ten privates in case of emergency.

Suggests that a military force be permanently stationed within the territory of the Board of Guardians of the Newtown and Llanidloes Union, as there is considerable dissatisfaction among the working classes with the operation of the Poor Law Amendment Act.

Desires him to retain the seditious papers addressed to C. Jones.

Suggests that one Roger Ashton, now in custody, be brought to Llanidloes, so that one Wm Edwards, a tradesman of the town, who is a very nervous man, be saved the ordeal of travelling to Montgomery to give his evidence.

Twenty-four special constables have been sworn in as the result of a report that several rioters from Llanidloes are being secreted in the parish. Constables from Newtown and Welshpool have applied for assistance in the capture of the rioters.

Reply to No. MB1/127. Approves of his reply to the deputy sheriff. Has directed that a military force be stationed at Newtown. Witnesses may be assured of complete protection by the government.
