History of the Gwydir family

A copy apparently made from Mostyn MS 39 (now NLW MS 3075D) after the writing of the marginal notes in that manuscript. There are some notes previously pinned to this copy in a different hand (now ff. 5a, 12a, 18a, 34a). These notes may have been taken from Dr Humphrey Humphreys' copy, and the same scribe has occasionally restored the original reading of Mostyn MS 39 where it had been discarded in favour of interlineations in that copy.

History of the Gwydir family,

  • NLW MS 12854D.
  • File
  • [18 cent., last ¼].

An imperfect, quarto volume inscribed on the outer cover 'Pedigree and historical account of ye Family of the Wynnes of Gwydir'. The contents consist of a late eighteenth century text of the well-known 'History of the Gwydir Family' by Sir John Wynn of Gwydir, and, as addenda, brief pedigrees of the Wynn family of Gwydir and its collateral branches, memoranda relating to some of the persons named in the pedigrees, and an incomplete copy of the summons from Henry Tudor to John ap Meredith [of Ystymcegid] to join him on his march from Milford [Haven] to oppose Richard III (already transcribed in full in the text of the 'History'). A few of the folios containing the addenda appear to be in a hand different from that of the 'History' itself, and there is some duplication of pedigrees. Inset is a loose sheet of paper containing ?a transcript of an inscription [in Gwydir Chapel in the parish church of Llanrwst] recording the erection of the said chapel by Sir Richard Wynne [son of the author of the 'History'] in 1633, and tracing the descent of Sir Richard and his brothers and sisters from Owen Gwynedd (see also Wynnstay MS 121).

History of the Gwydir family,

  • NLW MS 23289B [RESTRICTED ACCESS].
  • File
  • 1669, [18 cent., first ¼] /

A volume containing a copy, 1669, in the hand of Thomas Rowlands, clerk, of 'History of the Gwydir Family' by Sir John Wynn (1553-1627), Gwydir, Caernarvonshire (ff. 2-84 verso). It is the earliest known dated copy of a recension of the work represented by thirteen other copies (see below). It is probably the manuscript belonging in 1674 to Morris Parry, rector of Llaneilian-yn-Rhos, Denbighshire, from which the copy in NLW MS 3075D was made, and the manuscript described by Angharad Llwyd as 'a quarto volume of Syr John Wynn's History of Gwydyr, Ancient, and in good preservation' which in 1828 was in the possession of Richard Lloyd Williams of Hafodwryd, Penmachno, Caernarvonshire, then residing at Llwyn, Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, Denbighshire (see Transactions of the Cymmrodorion or Metropolitan Cambrian Institution, 2 (London, 1828), 44). Bound together are pedigrees and memoranda in several early-eighteenth century hands, including notes copied 'out of Penbedw MS' (NLW MS 3075D, p. 90), being transcripts of marginalia from 'Dr Humphreys's Copy' (Brogyntyn I.13, ff. 62 verso-3, 76) (ff. 85-6); a note on Meredith Wynn ap Evan ap Robert and his descendants (see also NLW MSS 27B, pp. 111-114, 16969B, pp. 128-132 and 21253D, ff. 27 verso-28 verso, where 'H. Bangor 1700' is given as the source) (ff. 89-91); pedigrees of the Wynn family of Gwydir and its collateral branches (ff. 86 verso-91, 95-98 verso); and 'Arfau pump brenhinllwyth Cymru' (f. 121 verso, inverted text).

Rowlands, Thomas, fl. 1669.

History of the Gwydir Family

A volume containing a copy in a mid-seventeenth century hand of 'History of the Gwydir Family' by Sir John Wynn of Gwydir, Caernarvonshire (ff. 8-73 verso). It is an early copy of a recension of the work represented by thirteen other copies (see below).
The text is here followed by pedigrees of and memoranda relating to the Wynn family of Gwydir and its collateral branches in several late seventeenth- or early eighteenth-century hands including that of Humphrey Humphreys, bishop of Bangor, afterwards of Hereford (ff. 75 verso-6, 79 verso-80); he has also added a marginal note on f. 63. Inserted later are a receipt, 1551, and a letter, 1599/1600, in the hand of Sir John Wynn (ff. 83a, 84a-b); and two notes, 1878 and [n.d.], relating to the volume, in the hand of W. W. E. Wynne, Peniarth (ff. 86a, 87a).

Works of Sir John Wynn of Gwydir

History of the Gwydir Family, headed (f. i, different hand from text) 'A true Coppy of a manuscript written by Sr. jon. Wynne of Gwydir Knt. & Barrt. ut Creditur & patet. 1607' (ff. 1-27). This text varies slightly from that of the latest printed edition (The History of the Gwydir Family, ed. by J. Ballinger (Cardiff, 1927)) but corresponds to the texts in NLW MS 27B, NLW MS 16969B and NLW, Wynnstay MS 120, and like them it contains a few occasional notes, some of them by Humphrey Humphreys, bishop of Bangor (in Wynnstay MS 120 some of these notes have been added to the text in a hand apparently that of bishop Humphreys, see pp. 40, 81). This text of the History therefore appears to derive either directly or indirectly from bishop Humphreys' copy, or copies, one of which was in all probability Wynnstay MS 120. The manuscript also includes further notes concerning 'Meredyth Wynn ap Evan ap Robert', his later life and his progeny (the information concerning the latter is alleged to have been found in 'Sr Thomas ap William's book of pedigrees) (ff. 27 verso-28 verso). These notes are subscribed 'H Bangor 1700' (not an autograph) and correspond to the notes in NLW MS 27B, pp. 111-114, in NLW MS 16969B (at the end of the History of the Gwydir Family) and in NLW, Wynnstay MS 121, pp. 1-3.
Also included in the manuscript are notes on natives of Caernarvonshire 'such as by there own Industry have Advanced their fortunes and became Eminent, ---' (ff. 32-40). These are the notes published under the title of Memoirs in the 1927 edn. of the History of the Gwydir Family (pp. 61-75) with one major difference: the copy in our MS contains a preface (ff. 32-32 verso) which does not occur in the printed edition (or in its source, NLW MS 27B, pp. 5-27). This preface begins: 'Now haveing taken View and Survey of the Soile and Situation of the County of Carnarvon, It would be considered and remembred what Witts and Worthy Members to the Common Wealth from time to time this poor County brought forth, ---' (f. 32), suggesting that these notes were once part of, or intended to be part of, a larger work on Caernarvonshire. The circumstantial information in this preface appears to support the suggestion that Sir John Wynn of Gwydir was the author of these notes (Ballinger, op.cit., p. xiv). Also included are 'Notes to be observed before you let your Survey Pass your hands' (ff. 43-50 verso). These notes also occur in NLW MS 27B, pp.115-137, and were printed under the somewhat misleading title of An Ancient Survey, of Pen Maen Mawr, --- by J. O. Haliwell in 1659 and reprinted by W. Bezant Lowe in 1906.
