Notebook, 1818-1841, of Sir John Guest containing various memoranda relating mainly to the iron and coal industries, including analysis of iron ores and various technical data; notes of tonnage of iron made at Dowlais and transported by canal; record of prices of bar iron; numbers of men, boys and girls working at Dowlais, 1818; together with a few political notes, notably an estimate of 'supposed influence in Glamorgan Boroughs'.

Summaries and short extracts from journals III-XVI were published in The Diaries of Lady Charlotte Guest, ed. by the Earl of Bessborough (1950), and from volumes XVI-XXXI in Lady Charlotte Schreiber, Extracts from her Journal, 1853-91, ed. by the Earl of Bessborough (1952). Extracts from volumes XI-XIII relating to the translation of the Mabinogion were published in D. Rhys Phillips, Lady Charlotte Guest and the Mabinogion (Carmarthen, 1921). Volumes XIX-XXVII were published in Lady Charlotte Schreiber's Journals: Confidences of a Collector of Ceramics and Antiques, ed. by Montague J. Guest & Egan Mew, 2 vols (1911).

Papers loose inside the volume include engraved views of Wesel, [Germany]; a poster, 1830, relating to the 'Swing riots' in Northamptonshire, sent to her stepfather, Rev. Peter W. Pegus; and notes and rough sketches of architectural details, a hand mangle and a domestic iron (10 ff.).

Papers loose in the volume comprise a postcard, 1897, from Messrs Birdsall, Northampton, [bookbinders], to Lady Charlotte's daughter, Mrs K[atherine Gwladys] Alderson, Lutterworth; and a letter, 1976, from John [Guest], Connecticut, to Dowager Viscountess Wimborne, enclosing photocopies of 8 pp., covering 18-22 July 1853, from a separate 'Works Journal' of Lady Charlotte in his possession.

Coal reports

A volume containing transcripts of reports, 1851-1853, on the Dowlais Collieries, prepared by Thomas E. Wales, Nicholas Wood, [George] Martin, [mine agent], and John Evans, [works manager], addressed to Sir J. J. Guest and later to Lady Charlotte (pp. 1-94, 155-178). Also included are details of the power of engines used at the Dowlais Works (pp. 204-206).
Loose in the volume is a manuscript statement concerning a strike at Dowlais in 1853 (9 ff.).
