Loose papers probably related to Octavius Morgan's antiquarian interests, including two share certificates, numbered 328 and 340, in the Monmouth Railway Company, in the names of Miss Mary Swinnerton of Wonastow and Sir Charles Morgan of Tredegar respecively, 1812; an English translation of the [pre-1599] manifesto of Henry IV, king of Navarre, concerning his divorce from Queen Margaret, [?1820x?1850]; a copy of an inventory of the furniture etc. in the manor house of Beddington, Surrey, on the death and attainder of Sir Nicholas Carew, 1540, when his estates were seized to the use of Henry VIII, and Sir Henry Stanhope was appointed keeper of the manor house, [?1860x?1900]; a window tax assessment for the parish of St Woolloos, Monmouthshire, 1750; a letter from Lord Rodney at Purbeck Park to an unnamed recipient [?Mr Blackburn], 1783. A file of papers, including a case for counsel's opinion relating to the marriage settlement of Charles Van and Catherine Morgan, 1754, a disposition of his estate at Llanworney, Monmouthshire, 1778, a copy of the marriage settlement of Robert Salusbury of Cotton Hall, Denbighshire, esq., and Catherine Van of Llanwern, spinster, 1780, and other papers relating to Salusbury, 1805-1818, was apparently bought at an auction. A pocket book including a list of the gentlemen who dined at a general meeting to nominate a candidate as M.P. in place of "my father", 1759, lists of freeholders living in Brecon, 1769, the common men and burgesses of the borough of Brecon, 1771, and Breconshire voters living at Hay and Talgarth, 1780.

Original bundle of notes, letters, pedigrees, abstracts of records, and other papers relating to the Herbert family, earls of Pembroke, the Herbert families of Ewias, Coldbrook, and St Julians, the Morgan families of Tredegar, Pen-carn, and Llangatwg Lingoed (later of Charmston in the Golden Valley in Herefordshire), the Gould family, the Stradling family of St Donats in Glamorgan, the Thomas family of Llanbradach and Ystradmynach, and loose papers, including on the lords lieutenant of Monmouthshire, William Baker, esq. (d. 1651), a Dominican monk of Abergavenny, the excavation of an unnamed barrow, the tomb of Sir Rhys ap Thomas (1451-1527) in Carmarthen church, and the rebuilding of the church at Old Alresford in Hampshire. Many of the letters are addressed to Octavius Morgan, and many of the notes are in his handwriting. -- The Morgan papers include photographs, 1902, of the Tredegar hatchments in Machen church, and a copy of a song, 'On Sir William Morgan, knight of the Bath's losing the badge of the order', ascribed to Stanhope, earl of Chesterfield, or to Sam Wesley, usher of Westminster School, and transcribed from [BL?] Add. Ms. 14934, fo. 213. -- The photographs are contact-print sized photographs glued to a piece of paper endorsed 'Tredegar "Achievements" "Hatchments" in Machen Church, 1902'. The hatchments are those of 'Jane wife of Thomas Morgan esq'r M.P. died 1767 aged 64', 'Thomas Morgan esq'r M.P. of Tredegar died 1769 aged 67', 'Mary wife of Charles Morgan esq'r M.P. died 1777 aged 42', 'Charles Morgan esq'r M.P. of Tredegar died 1787 aged 51', 'Anna Lascelles died 1862', 'Francis wife of Rev'd A. Morgan died 1867', and 'Rev'd Augustus Morgan died 1875' (two copies). -- A copy of a nine-verse song, 'The Cambro-Briton robb'd of his bauble' (Printed London, 1727), and a late-19th century bowdlerised six-verse version entitled 'On Sir William Morgan of Tredegar losing his star of the order of the Bath, 1727' have been added to the file for convenience. Annexed to 'The Cambro-Briton' is 'Bob and Harry: a new occasional song', apparently relating to the knightly Bob (aka Robin?) demeaning himself by answering Harry's pamphlet in kind.

Jones, 1785; the appointment by William Pitt, chancellor, of Sir Charles Gould as steward and bailiff of the Chiltern Hundreds in the place of Lord Frederick Campbell, whose appointment is revoked, 1787; an account of the Cefnmabli Oak, that fell in 1799; a copy of a punning poem on the fall of the Earl of Somerset, James I's favourite, [early 19 cent.]; General D'Auvergne's and the Duke of Portland's receipts for gout, the former testified for by Mr Howell, purser of the HMS Thunderer, and a receipt for rheumatism, [early 19 cent.]; an illustration of the columnar coral 'basaltes minimus striatus' on the Fairy Causeway near Tenby, Pembrokeshire, [early 19 cent.]; printed particulars of the premiums to be paid at Woburn, Bedfordshire, for the improvement of livestock, 1801; and biographical notes on 18-19 cent. members of the Morgan family, [late 19 cent.]. -- A loose [eighteenth century?] copy of an indenture between Oliver Cromwell, lord protector of the Commonwealth, and the Lords of the States General of the United Provinces confirming to article 28 of the peace [the Treaty of Westminster] made between the two, relating to arbitration over the English ships and goods seized in the dominions of the king of Denmark, 1654, has been added to this file for convenience.
