Yvain,

A 14th century manuscript in French prose containing the romance of Ywain (Owain ap Thomas ap Rhodri, otherwise Owain Lawgoch, otherwise Yvain de Galles (c. 1300-1378)). There is a rubric heading: 'Ceste liure est le liure de monseignor Y. et parole de maint buen cheualiers' and the text begins 'En ceste partie dit li contes que misser Yuain le fis au roi Vrien cheuauchait par une grant forest qui estoit apellee la perilleuse foreste ...'. The episode of the lion and dragon fighting (cf. Chrestien de Troyes, Le Chevalier au Lion, ll. 3341 sqq.) occurs on p. 1. There is a lacuna after p. 2. The text ends imperfectly. Inserted at the beginning is a letter to Lord Ashburnham from Thomas Boone the bookseller, 29 New Bond Street, 10 April [1852], concerning his purchase, on 'Ld. A.'s' behalf, of the following lots [at the Louis Philippe sale]: 1108 [Ashburnham Appendix 16] for 1605 fr., 1115 (Ashburnham Appendix 152) for 2150 fr., 1303 (Ashburnham Appendix 167, formerly Williams MS 529, now NLW MS 443D) for 1250 fr. and 1306 (formerly Williams MS 530, now NLW MS 444D) for 1960 fr. The manuscript includes coloured drawings illustrating the text, and a few illuminated initials.

A metrical version, in Welsh, of some of Aesop's fables by the Reverend Morris Williams (Nicander) and in his hand. Also included is a printed poem by Pedr Mostyn entitled Dafydd yn Fugail.

William Style: Heraldry and pedigrees (Vol. 1)

A volume, c. 1656-c. 1661, containing a catalogue of the Knights of the Bath made by Henry VIII in 1509, also of the Knights Bannerets and other nobility and gentry together with their coats of arms, etc. Also included in the volume are a table of all surnames mentioned with their heraldic insignia; an account of the arms in the Parlor Window at Newnham Padox in Warwickshire and at Coughton and Chesterton; an account of Kenilworth, Tamworth, Warwick and Maxstoke Castles; epitaphs from the church of Stratford, including those to Susanna Hall and Shakespeare; tomb inscriptions from various locations; a treatise on the right of bearing arms; and a list of gentry of Nottingham, with their coats of arms. William Robinson: Antiquities of Ancient Britain (Vol. 1)

An apparently unpublished work, in two volumes, c. 1846, by William Robinson, documenting the history of Britain 'from the first traditional beginning' and including accounts of the Saxons, Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans. Both volumes contain numerous original drawings and a map of Europe. With NLW MS 91B.

William Probert: Welsh and Breton grammars

Welsh and Breton grammars, mid 19 cent., in the hand of William Probert, in a volume divided into two sections. The Introduction is dated Walmsley, near Bolton, June 11, 1857. In the first section, Probert's own grammar is divided into five parts: 1) Letters 2) Parts of Speech 3) Derivation of Words 4) Syntax 5) Laws of Welsh Poetry. Probert has also added chapters on Pennillion and Pennillion Singing and on the Bardic Alphabet. The second section of the volume consists of a translation by Probert, completed September 2, 1865, of the Celto-Breton Grammar of Le Gonidec, first published in 1807.

William Probert: Hebrew-English grammar

A grammar, in two sections, the first being "a Hebrew and English Grammar without points, to which is added a short outline of the Chaldee Dialect adapted to the Hebrew Bible by William Probert", completed at Alnwick, August, 1818, and the second being "a short Welsh Grammar", also by William Probert.

William Owen Pughe: Miscellany

A volume, late 18 cent./early 19 cent., containing a miscellaneous collection of essays, letters, notes, extracts and translations, largely relating to Welsh poetry, philology, archaeology and history, mostly written by Dr William Owen Pughe (1759-1835) and sent to George Chalmers (1742-1825), Scottish antiquary.

William Owen Pughe: A Comparison between the Erse and Welsh Languages

A volume, compiled December 1797, in the hand of William Owen Pughe (1759-1835), consisting of an introduction followed by a long vocabulary of Irish words with Welsh equivalents. In a note by George Chalmers, F.S.A. (p. 4), it is said that the book was intended for the fourth volume of the Welsh Archaiology.

William Morris: Achau'r saint, statud Gruffudd ab Cynan, &c.

A volume, probably written by William Morris of Holyhead, containing lineages of saints, together with notes on their names; the statute of Gruffudd ab Cynan, Prince of Aberffraw; and an account of the Eisteddfod at Caerwys, Flintshire in 1565.

William Huddesford: Life of Edward Lhuyd

A volume containing the memoirs of the life of Edward Lhuyd, drawn up by William Huddesford before 1760 and printed, 1777, in British Remains by the Reverend N. Owen. A few leaves containing extracts from Ashmolean MS g. 38 have been inserted into the volume.

Welsh words derived from Latin

A volume, 19 cent., containing a list of Welsh words taken from T. Richards's Welsh Dictionary, 1753, which the writer supposes to be of Roman origin. The list also contains a short introductory note.

Welsh historical tracts

A volume, probably written 1730-1740, containing Welsh historical tracts, including a Dissertation concerning the Literature of the Antient Britons (pp. 2-70), written after 1730 (date on p. 63), a treatise (imperfect) on the superstition of the Welsh (pp. 71-106), an account of the Lordships Marchers (pp. 117-74) and a dissertation on the Welsh Laws (pp. 175-217). All the tracts seem to have been written by a clergyman holding a benefice in the diocese of St Asaph (pp. 82, 90) and some of them were addressed to a son or grandson of Baron Price (1655-1733) (pp. 82, 90). Also included is A Treatise of Lordshipps Marchers in Wales ... (early 17 cent.) (pp. 221-339) written by George Owen of Henllys and is the original treatise in George Owen's autograph which was reprinted, with very full annotations, in Owen's 'Pembrokeshire', Part III (Cymmrodorion Record Series, No. 1, pp. 127-205; George Owen's autograph, p. 133).
