Extracts from printed sources containing accounts of Valle Crucis abbey, verses, sayings, etc.

A volume containing a fair copy, [?1799] (watermarks 1794, 1796, 1798), of a journal of a tour through parts of England and Wales, August-September 1797, describing in particular country houses and other sites visited, road conditions and scenery.
Departing from London on 17 August, the itinerary included Oxford (ff. 8 verso-28 verso), Cheltenham, Gloucester and Worcester (ff. 37-51), Coalbrookdale (ff. 56 verso-58 verso), Shrewsbury (ff. 60-65), Welshpool (ff. 65 verso-69), Llangollen (ff. 73 verso-80), Corwen, Bala, Dolgellau and Barmouth (ff. 80 verso-89 verso), Aberystwyth and the vicinity (ff. 90-95 verso), Kington (f. 98 verso), Herefordshire (ff. 99-103), the lower Wye Valley from Hereford to Chepstow (ff. 103-113), and various houses in Wiltshire (ff. 114-134 verso). Included in the journal are descriptions of William Herschel's telescope at Slough (ff. 6-7 verso), various Oxford Colleges (ff. 9-27 verso), Chirk Castle (ff. 70 verso-72), Valle Crucis Abbey (ff. 78-79 verso) and the Hafod Estate, Cardiganshire (ff. 92-94 verso). The descriptions of Blenheim Palace (ff. 30-35 verso), Attingham House, Shropshire (ff. 63-64 verso), Stourhead (ff. 114 verso-120 verso), Fonthill (ff. 120 verso-124), Wardour Castle (ff. 124-127 verso) and Longford Castle (ff. 128-131), all Wiltshire, include lists of the paintings housed there. The file contains notices, programmes, orders of service and other papers mainly relating to local churches and chapels. Included are orders of service for annual bilingual inter-denominational services at Abaty Glyn-y-groes (Valle Crucis Abbey), 1979-1980, and for the enthronement of Alwyn Rice Jones as Bishop of St Asaph, 1982, and letters relating to the visit of Pope John Paul II to Canterbury, 1982.

A notebook in the hand of J. H. Davies containing miscellaneous biographical and bibliographical extracts and notes from printed sources and from manuscript volumes in the British Museum, the National Library of Wales and elsewhere, including material relating to the abbots of Conway, Ystrad Marchell (Strata Marcella), Strata Florida and Llanegwestl (Valle Crucis); Welsh pedigrees; and manuscripts containing poetry, largely by Tudur Aled.

An agreement, 23 February, 1846, for the lease by Griffith Howell Vaughan, esq., of Rug, Merioneth, to Griffith Owen, of Vaner, parish of Llanelltyd; an indenture, 1 May, 1848, of apprenticeship for five years of Joseph Roberts of Rose Street, Ruthin, as master in Ruthin British School (Edward Jones of Brynhyfryd, esq., James Maurice of Well Street, esq., and John Jones of Market Place, Ruthin, managers, and John Edmunds of Ruthin, master) (a printed appendix contains extracts from minutes of the Committee of Council on Education, 21 December, 1846, and endorsed is an assignment of the original indenture to James Cromwell, successor to John Edmunds, 27 November, 1850); an unexecuted agreement for the lease from Hugh John Ellis Nanney of Gwynfryn, parish of Llanstymddwy, Caernarvonshire, esq., to David Evans of Cae Einion, Dolgelley, Merioneth, from year to year, commencing 25 March, 1887, of the farm called Cae Einion; a declaration signed by thirty-two students of Trevecca College, 11 November, 1889, denying statements made in Yr Haul 'concerning the intended secession of any student to the Church of England'; a galley proof of an article entitled 'Mr. Lloyd George, M.P., and the Goleuad', relating to Disestablishment and the bearing of Mr. Lloyd George's political action on Welsh Liberal policy, together with manuscript observations by Sir E. J. Reed, M.P. for Cardiff; a pedigree of the family of Jones of Llanio, Cardiganshire; miscelaneous poetry of Dolgelley interest (e.g. verses on the occasion of the marriage of Joseph Roberts, C.M., British School, and Miss Annie Jones, Penbryn, Dolgellau, 1860); a receipt for poor rate for the parish of Dolgelley, 1846; press cuttings, 1888, relating to the case of H. J. Ellis Nanney and his Merioneth tenants; Morris Charles Jones: Valle Crucis Abbey ... (London, 1866), bearing the name of R[ichard] Williams [Celynog, Newtown], 20 October, 1866; and 'Etholiad Cyffredinol 1900. Letters to W. W. E. Wynne from Joseph Morris, Shrewsbury, 1829-1839, and the Rev. John Jones, Llanllyfni, 1834-1840; a poem entitled 'Egrin's Lamentations'; a transcript of Gruffith ap Madoc's charter to the monastery of Valle Crucis, 1254; and a treatise on the use of the globes.

Correspondents include Rev. Hugh T. Owen on the excavations at Valle Crucis Abbey, 1899, Lord Penryn, 1893, Jonathan Pim, 1873, Francis Seymour, 1855-1862, George Francis Seymour, 1850-1865; William Henry Smith on the Tithe Bill, 1887, with a draft reply describing opposition by the public and the Welsh language press; and Charles Seymour reporting the death of Owen Arthur Ormsby-Gore, 1852.

A minute book of the Literary Society of Gerlan Calvinistic Methodist Church, Gerlan, Bethesda, Caernarvonshire, covering (with some gaps) the period 1906-19. Among the entries are detailed reports of lectures by Principal [Thomas] Rees, Bangor (on 'David Livingstone'), Professor [Sir] John Morris-Jones, Bangor ('Dewi Wyn o Eifion' and 'Pantycelyn'), Thomas Shankland, Bangor ('Morgan John Rhys, y Jacobin Cymreig'), S. Maurice Jones, Caernarvon ('Olion Hen Hanes Cymru', with illustrations, by the recorder, of Caernarvon Castle, Valle Crucis Abbey, the parliament house of Owain Glyndŵr at Dolgellau, Cefn Brith, etc.), J. H. Jones ('Je Aitsh'), Liverpool ('Y Cymro trwy lygad Said'), [Lewis Davies Jones] ('Llew Tegid') ('Trioedd hen a newydd), [Robert] Gwyneddon Davies and Mrs. [Grace] Gwyneddon Davies ('Alawon Gwerin'), T. A volume of 'cywyddau', etc. transcribed by W[illiam] H[enry] Mounsey in 1859 from manuscripts in the British Museum ('Barddoniaeth sef Casgliad O Waith Beirdd Cymru. Tynwyd allan y Casgiad hwn O Ysgriflyfrau yn yr Amgueddfa Brydeinig Genyf fi, Wiliam Henri Mounsey O Gaerliwelyd [sic] yn Sir Cwmberland. 1859'), together with annotations by D. Silvan Evans. The poets represented are Iolo Goch, Llywelyn Moel y Pantri, Gruffydd Gryg, Iorwerth Cyriog, Gutto'r Glyn, Iorwerth Vynglwyd, Lewis Morganwg, Sefnyn, Sippyn Cyfeiliog, Syr D[afydd] Trefor, Robin Ddu ('hynaf, o Fôn'), Rhys Goch Eryri, Doctor Sion Cent, Rhys Brydydd, Llawdden, Dafydd Nanmor, Dafydd ap Edmwnt, Guttyn Owain, Deio ap Ieuan Du, Llewelyn ap Guttyn, Gruffydd Hiraethog, William Cynwal, Sion Tudur, William Lleyn, Morus Kyffin, Mredydd ap Rhys, Robert Dai Llwyd and Sion Gruffudd ('o Llanddyfnan'). Among the illustrations and cut-outs mounted on the fly-leaves and in blank spaces in the manuscript are engravings of Montgomery Castle, the Fall of the Ogwen, Conway Tubular Bridge and Castle, Llyn Idwall, Rhaiadr Du near Tan y Bwlch, Moel y Gest, Denbigh, Snowden [sic] and Llanberis Lake, Valle Cruces Abbey and Pont Aberglaslyn. The spine is lettered 'Casgliad o Waith Beirdd Cymru. W. H. Mounsey. 1859'.

The subjects include Llandderfel Church, Corwen Church, Plas Newydd [Llangollen], Llangollen Church, Pillar of Eliseg, Valle Crucis Abbey, Castell Dinas Brin, Nerquis Chapel, Nerquis House, and Llandrinio Church.
