Welsh Church Tune & Chant Book

A copy of the fifth edition of the Welsh Church Tune & Chant Book by Thomas Jones, rector of Llanengan, presented by the author to David Lewis, 1866, with manuscript notes by the latter, a translation by William Williams, vicar of Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, of a hymn ('Loywaf o'r ser sydd yn britho'r ffurfafen'), and a copy of the hymn 'Paradwys Duw'.

Notebook, dated 1823 (watermark 1819), written for Miss Hester Anne Taylor 'by one of her "Neices"' (p. 88).
The volume includes a transcript of a letter from Lady Ann[e] Erskine to an unidentified recipient (pp. 2-30), a sermon (pp. 31-52) and a short narrative on Welsh preaching, including an example of a sermon by Christmas Evans (pp. 53-61), together with hymns and devotional poems (pp. 62-87) by the Rev. John Marriott (pp. 63-71), Hannah More (pp. 72-73), Bishop [George] Horne (pp. 74-75), T[homas] Moore (p. 82), [Joseph] Grigg (pp. 84-85), Mrs [Anne] Steele (p. 86) and [Thomas] Gibbons (p. 87) amongst others. The manuscript is probably associated with the Taylor family of Carmarthen, prominent local Methodists during the first quarter of the nineteenth century (see also NLW MS 13625A).

One of two albums of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century (see also NLW MS 11982D), containing press cuttings, printed matter, and some manuscript material compiled probably by a member of the family of Ffoulkes of Eriviatt, Henllan, Denbighshire.
The press cuttings include obituaries of Sir Frederick Gore Ouseley, canon of Hereford Cathedral, 1889, Edmund Salusbury Ffoulkes, vicar of the University Church of St Mary the Virgin, Oxford, 1894, and Canon Howell Evans, vicar of Rhyl, 1892; accounts of the Ober-ammergau Passion Play, 1870, 1880, 1890; and articles on The Welsh Land Commission, [1894], Welsh Disestablishment, 1893, 'Discovery of Celtic Antiquities in Derbyshire', 1901, and 'New Church Chancel at Buckley', 1901. Among the printed items are hymns to be sung at the funeral of Henry Wynne Ffoulkes, Odd Rode, 1904, a memoir of Charles Butler Clough, M.A., dean and chancellor of St. Asaph, 1860, order of service at the opening of a new organ at Whittington, [1884], the charge of cruelty to a horse against Miss Frances Power Cobbe and her coachman David Evans heard at Barmouth Petty Sessions, 1902, verses to Peirce Wynne Yorke in honour of his attaining his majority, 1847, and a Form of Intercession with Almighty God on behalf of Her Majesty's Naval and Military Forces now in South Africa (marked with the rubber stamp of St. Thomas’s Church, Rhyl), 1900. The manuscript material includes verses entitled 'Mary's Ghost. A pathetic Ballad', 'Miss Elizabeth Fortescue in Italy' by T. V., 1834, and 'To some Young Ladies going to spend the Spring & Summer at Putney Heath', and a copy of the memorial inscription of Emma, fourth daughter of Capt. Beauchamp Proctor, R.N., and Anne, his wife, who died at Paris in the sixth year of her age, 1827. The volume is indexed (pp. iii-xxvi).

Extensive material relating to Welsh bibliography accumulated by, and mainly in the hand of, D. Silvan Evans. It includes a volume entitled 'Bibliotheca Cambrensis. Llyfrofyddiaeth Cymru' ('A[u]ctore Dan. Silvano Evans, Cereticense') (pasted on to the inside lower cover is a holograph letter from the Reverend David Williams, Llanedy Rectory, 1868, giving the entry of baptism of John, son of John Walter, cleric and lexicographer, on 22 August 1721); a home-made notebook entitled 'Llyvryddiaeth Gymreig' (pasted on to the inside lower cover is a note in the hand of Benjamin Williams, ('Gwynionydd')); another home-made notebook entitled 'Emynau detholedig at Wasanaeth yr Eglwys. Rhag. 29, 1862', being a bibliography of Welsh hymnals and relevant source material; copious unbound leaves containing book titles (one of the titles is written on the dorse of a letter from M. A. Lewis, Tredegar Post Office, 1868, requesting the return of the writer's copy of 'Dr. J. D. Rees's Old Grammar'); and letters from John Peter ('Ioan Pedr'), Bala to [Henri] Gaidoz, 1870 (publications not contained in Rowland's work [Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry]), to D. The hymn was collected in Diferion y Cyssegr: Sef Crynodeb o Hymnau a Chaniadau Ysbrydol o Waith Amrywiol Awdwyr (Caerlleon [i.e. Chester], 1802) (hymn No. 115) and in Casgliad o Hymnau … at Wasanaeth y Methodistiaid Wesleyaidd (1845) (hymn No. 635, entitled 'Ofnau'n ffoi'), in neither of which is the hymn-writer named. There are a few minor corrections and marginal annotations, in ink and pencil, to the printed text (ff. 9 verso, 23, 30, 60, 71, 92 verso, 119 verso, 132, 147, 179, 201 verso).

A volume containing hymn-tunes and folk-tunes together with an index to the tunes, written in a mid-nineteenth century hand (ff. 73-209), bound together with a copy of William Owen, Prysgol, Y Perl Cerddorol... (Caernarfon, 1852) (ff. 7-72). A note in pencil on f. 1, probably in the hand of Philip Thomas, suggesting 'Shenkin Dounie, Harpist, Neath' to have been the scribe is probably an error for John Dounie [Downey], harpist, the Mera, Neath (see E. E. Williams, 'The queen of the Mera', Neath Antiquarian Society Transactions (1979), 6-7). Also included is a printed advertisement for John Ambrose Lloyd, Casgliad o Donau... (1843) (f. 210).
