Papers relating to civil disputes and actions

The group comprises legal papers arising from court cases, mostly Chancery proceedings, 1672-1928, rules for court procedures, 1764, and papers resulting from disputes which did not take place in court, such as arbitration awards and agreements, 1677-1839, mainly concerning difficulties over title and encumbrances on properties such as Cae'rberllan and Cwyber in the late seventeenth century, Tyddyn Glan y Ffynnon and Gwaun Dwysog in the mid eighteenth century, and with problems of inheritance, for example, following the death of John Griffith (2) of Garn in 1758.

Genealogical papers

The group comprises a pedigree roll, other pedigrees in handwritten, tabulated and typed forms, extracts from parish registers, and notes on the genealogy of Griffith of Garn and the families with whom they intermarried, such as Hughes of Cae'r berllan, Myddelton of Gwaunynog, and Wynne of Garthmeilio, Cwm-mein and Plasnewydd, [pre-1614]-[c. 1934], and of other families who were more distantly related or who were relevant to the history of the estate, [1881x1887]-1922.

Personal papers

The group comprises personal papers, being letters written by and received by the Griffith family, 1724-1943, letters of families such as Hughes of Gwydir, Weeg, Llwyn Gronw and Cae'rberllan, Roberts of Bryn y neuadd, Wynne of Garthmeilio and Plasnewydd, and others, 1680-1882, small diaries, pocket notebooks and almanacks containing memoranda and personal notes, 1701-1853, a few photographs, postcards and other memorabilia, 1901-[c. 1940], school papers, certificates and appointments, 1746-1920. The family members who are most frequently represented here are Jane Griffith (nee Hughes), John Wynne Griffith, Jane Griffith (nee Wynne), George Griffith, Edward Humphrey Griffith, William Henry Griffith and William Douglas Wynne Griffith. The letters, notebooks and diaries are illustrative of late eighteenth and nineteenth century life, particularly with regard to the family and household, social engagements, sporting activities, travel, elections, contemporary local and national events, domestic organisation and estate management.

Trust papers

The group comprises deeds, rentals, accounts, bonds, letters, agreements, arbitration papers and legal papers relating to the Griffith family trusts of the Voelas estate, 1712-1763, and the Plasnewydd estate, 1783-1843, and to three non-family trusts, [c. 1814]-1879.

Domestic management papers

The group consists of domestic management papers, comprising domestic accounts, 1744-1885, papers concerning management of household, servants and garden, 1781-1838, and recipes for household, human and veterinary use, 1725-1810.

Estate administration papers

The group consists of administrative records of the estates in Denbighshire, Flintshire, Caernarfonshire and Merionethshire, including rentals, 1658-1784, leases and related documents, 1756-1906, papers concerning crown rents, 1791-1845, enclosures and commons, 1802-1848, timber and mineral exploitation, 1748-1789, sporting rights, 1912, surveys and valuations, 1751-1880, maps and plans, 1776-1866 and estate accounts, 1708-1911.

Financial papers

The group comprises financial papers of the Griffith family of Garn and others such as Hughes of Gwydir and Weeg and Wynn of Havodgregog, including accounts, bills and receipts, 1687-1906, mortgages, 1680-1862, bonds and promissory notes, 1736-1876.

Local government and political papers

The group comprises papers recording the history, organisation and administrative procedures of local government institutions in Denbigh, Holt and Ruthin [post-1719]-1847, Denbigh town council elections, 1865, 1887, 1921, borough elections in Denbigh and parts of Flintshire, [c. 1742], [c. 1803], 1806, 1813, and draft petitions and speeches on topics of national political interest, 1814-1926. Some of the papers include substantial lists of burgesses.

Militia papers

The group comprises general records relating to the organisation of local militia groups, particularly in Denbighshire, 1801-1813, 1871-1876, and papers deriving from the involvement of John Wynne Griffith in a court martial in the Western Regiment of Denbighshire Local Militia, 1813.

Family settlements and probate records

The group comprises original, draft and copy marriage settlements, other family settlements, wills, administration bonds and related deeds and documents of the main families of Griffith of Garn, 1685-1863, Hughes of Gwydir, Llwyn Gronw, Cae'r berllan and Weeg, 1654-1823, Roberts of Bryn y Neuadd, 1714-1722, Wynne of Garthmeilio, Cwm Mein and Plasnewydd, 1713-1811, and Wynne of Voelas, 1606, and a small number of peripheral families, such as Chambres of Plas Chambres, 1704, and Griffith (ancestors of Mary Davies of Trewylan), 1666.

Literary papers

The group comprises poetry, translations, essays and other literary compositions commemorating contemporary and historical events and local figures, [1660]-1925, academic notes, educational exercises and extracts from ancient literature and science, 1734, 1819-1841, 1925, in manuscript and typescript, written in exercise books and on loose sheets.

Ecclesiastical papers

The group comprises a small number of papers linked with the clergy, 1727, the poor law, 1764 and disestablishment, 1912.

Papers concerning Menai Bridge and Bangor to Holyhead road building scheme

The section comprises notices advertising the summoning of a special jury in accordance with an act of Parliament, for the purpose of assessing the value of the interest of Miss Jane Silence Williams' trustees in the Bangor Ferry, prior to its compulsory purchase in advance of the Menai Bridge and Bangor to Holyhead road building scheme.

Title deeds

The group comprises deeds for houses and lands of Griffith of Garn and related families in Denbighshire, 1572-1903, Flintshire, 1737-1891, Anglesey, 1770-1790, Merioneth and Denbighshire combined, 1681, 1691, 1737, Caernarfonshire, 1616-1821, Montgomeryshire, 1754, and miscellaneous counties, 1815, [c. 1819]. The documents comprise deeds of feoffment, bargain and sale, lease and release, grants in fee farm, leases, fines, exemplifications of recovery and other deeds associated with fines and recoveries, mortgages, assignments, probate records, bonds, settlements, abstracts of title and schedules of deeds. They are mostly original, but they also include copies and drafts.
