A small notebook probably in the autograph of the Reverend Hugh Pugh (1803-68), Mostyn inscribed '"Tarian Rhyddyd" &c. Novr. 1838' and containing minutes, November 1838 - July 1839, and a list of co-proprietors in connection with Tarian Rhyddid, a Dymchwelydd Gormes, a monthly publication, the first number of which appeared in January 1839. The 'Reverend H. Pugh' is named as secretary and the Reverend W[illia]m Rees as editor. At the reverse end of the volume are some sermon notes.

A notebook in the hand of J. H. Davies containing a chronological list of printed books in Welsh and of Welsh interest, 1599-1886 and undated, being the first lot purchased by him from William John Roberts ('Gwilym Cowlyd') 'a day or two' before the latter's sale [in April 1897]. At the end of the volume, partly in the hand of J. H. Davies, are particulars of gaps in files of newspapers, periodicals, etc. (Y Goleuad, Trysorfa y Plant, Welsh Gazette, and Welsh Piety) in the Cwrtmawr library.

A notebook ('Ballads Index Book 2') in the hand of J. H. Davies containing a short list of titles of Welsh ballads. Beginning at the end is an imperfect (1859-61 only) transcript of a list of contents, with authors' names, of Y Beirniad, 1859-79, - 'Enwau Awduron Erthyglau yn y Beirniad 1859-79 a godwyd o ysgriflyfr y Parchedig J. B. Jones, B. A.'.

A collection of notebooks and unbound leaves and fragments containing poetry in strict and free metres and prose writings by and largely in the hand of Rhys Williams ('Manod Wyllt'; 1841-67), of Hendre, Blaenpennal, Cardiganshire. Such of the compostions as are dated belong to the period 1857-65. Some of the verses are covered by letters to [Richard Davies] 'Mynyddog', 1864, [Hugh Parry] 'Hywel Glan Cefni', 1864, [John Lewis] 'Ioan Mynyw', undated, etc., and others are annotated in the hand of Benjamin Williams ('Gwynionydd'), who anonymously edited Caniadau Manod Wyllt, gyda Chofiant o'r Awdur (Aberystwyth, 1867). The prose writings consist of essays, lectures and expository notes on scripture and among the titles are 'Meddwdod a'i Effeithiau', 'Dylanwad Cymdeithas ar Fasnach a Chelfyddyd', 'Darlith ar Nodweddiad Cynulleidfaol y Cymru', 'Santeiddhad a Ffrwythau' ('Un o Destynau Cyfarfod dau fisol yr ysgolion yn Ysbytti, Mawrth 20 1861'), 'Darlith ar y Myglys', 'Anniweirdeb', 'Na chymer enw Duw yn ofer', 'Cariad', 'Meddwl', etc. One volume was originally an account book, 1845-65, of ?a local (Blaenpennal area) Women's Friendly Society and was subsequently used as a scrap book for cuttings from Baner ac Amserau Cymru, 20 September 1865, recording proceedings at the Aberystwyth National Eisteddfod of that year. Among a few related items in the collection is a holograph list of literary prizes entitled 'Cofrestr o'r Gwobryon a Enillais', 1862-3.

A scrap book compiled by ?John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') containing undated cuttings from Welsh and Welsh American newspapers, among those (identified on internal evidence) being Y Gweithiwr, Y Celt and Y Drych. Titles include 'Y Flwyddyn' (being an account of Welsh customs associated with feast days) partly signed by 'M.M.', 'Nodiadau Henafiaethol' by O[wen] Morgan ('Morien'), Pontypridd, 'Hynafiaeth Llanilltyd Fawr' by [David Watkin Jones] 'Dafydd Morganwg', 'Hynafiaethau Ceredigion' by John Rowlands ('Giraldus'), Cardiff , 'Yr Eisteddfod' by [Lewis Williams Lewis] 'Llew Llwyfo', 'Gwyddoniaeth, Moesoldeb a Chrefydd' by R. C. Roberts, Deerfield, N. Y., 'Llydaw a'r Llydawiaid' (being a report of a lecture delivered [in Liverpool] by E[dward] Thomas ('Cochfarf'), Cardiff), 'Beirniadaethau Eisteddfod Utica, N. Y.' 'Hirhoedledd' by the Reverend J. H. Jones, Rome, N. Y., 'Pa fodd y mae dyn yn byw, symud ac yn bod' ('Gan Feddyg o Pasadena, Calif.'), and 'Hanes y Bedyddwyr ym mhlwyf Gelligaer' by the Reverend R[ichard] Evans, Hengoed. Also included in the volume are the printed articles of incorporation of 'Cymdeithas Gymreigyddol Powys', 1861, and a printed circular appeal by the editor, Beriah Gwynfe Evans, on behalf of Cyfaill yr Aelwyd. Inset are cuttings, extracted from another scrap book, of articles (Llythyrau I-IV) on 'Griffith Williams, Esgob Ossary, a'i amserau' published by J[ohn] J[ones], rector of Llanllyfni, in Yr Herald Cymraeg, 1857.

A scrap book lettered 'Afonydd Cymru' compiled by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'). It contains press cuttings entitled 'Afonydd Cymru' (from Yr Haul, 1870-1, passim), 'Yr Afon Wynion' by 'Glan Wynion', Dolgellau and by 'E' [from Y Cymro], 'Llenyddiaeth yr Afonydd' by 'Idnerth', Buth y Bardd, 'Taith ar hyd Glan yr Afon Ceri, Ceredigion' (incomplete), 'Prif afonydd swyddi Caer yn Arfon a Meirion' by 'Peris'' (from Y Gwyliedydd, May 1833), 'Rhestr o brif lynoedd Cymru', 'Llynoedd Sir Gaernarfon', etc., with annotations and additions in the hand of the compiler.

The titles include 'Gorsedd y Beirdd', 'Yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol' (Cardiff, 1883), 'Diwygiad yr Eisteddfod', 'Yr Eisteddfod a'i Hanes' (Rhyl, 1892), 'Llith Aneurin Fardd', 'Eisteddfod Genhedlaethol Aberdar, 1861 - "Hanes Llenyddol Cymru". Beirniadaeth' (by T. Stephens, Merthyr Tydfil), 'Sion Philip, Mochras', 'The British Kymry .... By the Rev. R. W. Morgan, Pc, Tregynon' (review), 'Yn y Bala', 'Review Flynyddol Gwirfoddolwyr Morgannwg ar Gomin Hirwain', 'Taith tua Chaerlleon-ar-Wysg', 'Y Gohebydd Gwibiol' (notes on the history and antiquities of Llandybie, Bettws, Llanarthney, Gelli Aur, Llanfihangel Aberbythych, Llangathen, Abergwili and Carmarthen), 'Hen Arferion Crefyddol y Cymry', 'Brawddegau y Werin' (a list of Welsh dialect expressions), etc. Also mounted in the volume is a printed prospectus of Robert Griffith (Manchester), Telyn a Cherdd Dannau y Cymry [?1913]. There are two labels laid on the outer upper cover, the one numbered '10' and the other in the hand of 'Myrddin Fardd' inscribed 'Chwidredd J. Morris Jones, Llythyrau Aneurin Fardd, Beirniadaeth T. Stephens, The British Kymry, etc. etc.'.

A scrap-book compiled, with a holograph introduction and table of authors, by David Evans, Llanrwst containing press cuttings, largely from Llais y Wlad, 1875-?81, of 'cywyddau' and 'awdlau', with annotations. The poetry consists mainly of the flyting 'cywyddau' of Edmwnd Prys and William Cynwal ('Yr Ymrysonfeydd rhwng Edmwnd Prys, Archddiacon Meirionydd, a William Cynwal, Prydydd ac Arwyddfardd') and 'cywyddau' ('Cyfansoddiadau') by Dafydd Llwyd ab Llywelyn ab Gruffydd Fychan. An exercise-book containing lists of periodicals, etc. (Trysorfa y Plant, Y Drysorfa, Yr Haul, Young Wales, Cylchgrawn, and Monthly Treasury (loose sheet)), with details of the issues available and those wanting. There are also some printed lists of books, some marked with a tick. The lists were probably compiled by Mrs Peter Hughes Griffiths and J. H. Davies.

A notebook containing press cuttings, chiefly of some of the articles in a series entitled 'Y Bardd' by 'Cato' (Y Gwladgarwr, 1879-80).
