Conciliation boards,

Material relating to the activites of a number of conciliation boards, in particular meetings between representatives of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association and representatives of various sections of workers, including (but not limited to) winding enginemen, craftsmen, clerks, colliery examiners, hauliers and weighers. The majority of the records cover meetings of the Conciliation Board Standing Disputes Committee and of other meetings between both sides to discuss issues relating mainly to wages and work rules.

Material related to the work of many Coal Owners Association joint committees, including the following: Joint Sliding Scale Committee; Enginemen Wages Committee; Joint Standing Disputes Committee; Enginemen's Association; South Wales Coal Shipment Advisory Committee; South Wales Committee on Physical and Chemical Survey of the National Coal Resources; Joint Committee representing the Safety in Mines Research Board, Colliery Owners, Mining Engineers, Workmen, H.M. Inspector of Mines, Colliery Managers; South Wales Area Committee of the Coal Utilization Council; Disputes Finality Committee and the Joint Coal Production Committee. Material comprises mainly minutes of proceedings, résumés, notices and agenda.

Rates of pay,

Statistical tables giving detailed information on the rates of pay for different classes of workmen throughout the South Wales coalfield. Schedules are given for associated and non-associated collieries in the Cardiff, Newport and Swansea districts. Classes of workmen include: Enginemen, Pumpmen, Company's Boys, Colliers' Boys, Timbermen, Assistant Timbermen, Rippers, Assistant Rippers, Blocklayers, Roadmen, Hauliers, Trammers, Riders, Hitchers, Labourers, Ostlers, Fitters, Electricians, Rope Splicers, Masons, Pitmen, Shacklers and Spragmen, Lamplockers, Lamplighters, Oilers, Coalcuttermen, Airwaymen, Watermen, Cogcutters and Timber Drawers.
