Chiaroscuro and other writings by Augustus John
The series comprises photocopies of correspondence, 1924-1962, mainly between Augustus John and his publisher Jonathan Cape relating to the artist's autobiography, together with publishing agreements, 1938-1962 (with gaps), and book reviews, 1952. Also included are photocopies of writings by Augustus John including his recollections of J. D. Innes, [?1914], and Ronald Firbank, [?1930].
Publishing agreements and copyright holders
The file comprises agreements between Michael Holroyd and the following publishers: William Heinemann, 1969, Holt, Reinhart and Winston, USA, 1970, William Heinemann, 1974, and Viking Penguin, USA, 1987, together with photocopies of the copyright agreement signed by Dorelia John in 1969 and by Edwin John as the copyright holder of Gwen John, 1969. Also included is a letter, 1968, relating to copyright in the letters of Mrs Julian Vinogradoff's mother Lady Ottoline Morrell, and corrected page proofs, 1973, of passages relating to her mother in the biography.
The series comprises papers relating to the book The art of Augustus John published in 1974, including letters from his co-author Malcolm Easton, 1969-1972, and the final revised typescript, [1974].
