A volume containing forty-three odes composed and written by Wiliam Kynwal between 1567 and 1576 (ff. vii verso, 1-93). He began the manuscript at Cerrig Ellgwm 'yn fy siambr vy hun yngheric Ellgwm y trydydd dydd o vis mai o vewn yssbyty dol gynwal a duw a wyr na wnn pwy na[c] ym ha le y gorffennir ef' (ff. v verso-vi). The odes are headed by the arms of the persons addressed, except in the case of the odlau merched, in which quaint sketches of women are substituted.
Also included are a prologue (ff. 5-6) and an incomplete table of contents (f. 6 recto-verso). At the end of the manuscript there is a rough copy of an ode by Huw Machno (ff. 95-96), who has also written some notes on the folios at the beginning (ff. i-iv).

A transcript of the 'flyting' poems of Edmwnd Prys (1543/4-1623) and Wiliam Cynwal (d. 1587/8), with anonymous englynion, a copy of a cywydd by Rhys Goch Eryri (fl. early 15 cent.), and a fragment of an elegy by Stephen Philips upon the death of Queen Anne (1665-1714); financial memoranda, 1751-1756.

Cywyddau and awdlau written in a seventeenth-century hand, comprising mainly poems by Thomas Prys (derived from NLW MS 3031B) (pp.19-141), Dafydd ap Gwilym (derived from NLW 3066E) (pp.195-295), Wiliam Cynwal (some derived from NLW 3030B) (pp.307-498), Guto'r Glyn (pp. 559-606), Siôn Tudur (pp. 685-751) and Tudur Aled (pp. 799-826).

The first part of a photostat facsimile, bound for convenience in two volumes (see also NLW MS 6496C), of Christ Church (Oxford) MS 184, a manuscript written in various hands of the 16th and 17th centuries. The original portion was written by William Cynwal (d. 1587/8), herald bard, who also inserted a note explaining how the manuscript came to be written. The major part of the volumes, written in Welsh, consists of cywyddau, awdlau and englynion, many of them in the autograph of the authors, and most of them written to various members of the Salusbury family of Llewenni and to Katherine of Berain (1534/5-1591). The English portion of the manuscripts includes autograph poems by Sir John Salusbury (1567-1612) and Robert Chester (fl. c. 1586-1604), and others. Also included in the manuscripts are the coats of arms of Katherine of Berain, resulting from her four marriages; a few Latin items, including elegies and epitaphs to Katherine of Berain; a rough index to the contents of the volumes compiled by John Jones (Tegid) (1792-1852), Christ Church, Oxford, in the 19th century.

A manuscript of Welsh pedigrees, compiled by the sixteenth-century poet and transcriber, Wiliam Cynwal (dec. 1587) of Ysbyty Ifan. The hand of Wiliam Cynwal runs throughout the MS, there are however a few minor additions to the text by later hands scattered throughout the work. Each genealogy is preceded by a heading locating or naming the family seat; a bolder script is then employed at the beginning of the genealogy proper and sometimes subsequently when a sub-section is introduced. There is rubrication on ff. 5, 117 verso and 292 verso. The aim and scope of the MS is set out by the scribe in an introductory note on f. i, where it is said that the intention is to record the pedigrees of the gentry of Gwynedd, Powys and parts of the counties of Cheshire and Shropshire. He also states his intention of preparing a similar MS to include the pedigrees of the families of the seven counties of Deheubarth. Before the end of the present MS, however, the transcriber has diverted a significant portion of his MS to record details of South Wales families. This MS, like several of Cynwal's other genealogical MSS, concentrates on tracing the maternal ancestors of the families in question. Genealogical and heraldic MSS in his hand include: Bangor 5943, BM Harleian 1961 and Peniarth 128 and 183.
The MS opens with the following preface: 'Y llyfr hwnn a ddechrevais i Wiliam Kynwal pryd[ydd] hel i Iachav ai yscrivennv p[an] oedd oed Krist 1565 ac ynddo yr wyf yn Roi Iachav boneddicion gwynedd a ffowys a phart o sir gaer lleon ac o sir y mwythic a llyfr arall yr wyf yni wnevthvr o Iachav boneddicion saith sir dehevbarth y llyfr hwnn a yscrifenais o amafaelion (sic). lyfrav yn gowiraf ac ygellais drwy boen travael ac anhvnedd ac er hynny medd y ddihareb ni chair dim heb i vai velly o bydd neb ar vol Inav awypo yn sikr [fod] bai ar y llyfr hwnn adolw[yn] I ymendio ac yn gyntaf [ ]Kair y dabl [ ] ch [ym]ovynner [ ]' (f. i).

A manuscript containing holograph cywyddau by Wiliam Cynwal written between 1572 (f. 6) and his death in 1588. The poems are accompanied by illustrations of their subjects' coats of arms.

A cursory examination of the items included in the manuscript suggests that about ten of the poems are not recorded in other manuscripts. The volume is written in several hands of the late sixteenth century including those of Simwnt Fychan (ff. 73-75) and Wiliam Cynwal (ff. 79-81), two of the bardic pupils of Gruffudd Hiraethog, and also the hand of Rhys Cain, the herald bard of Oswestry, who was a pupil of Wiliam Llŷn, another of Gruffudd Hiraethog's pupils (ff. 4-6 verso, 101 verso-148 verso).

(Bristol, 1753).
