Antiquae Linguae Britannicae ...,

John Davies, Antiquae Linguae Britannicae .... et Linguae Latinae Dictionarium Duplex (London, 1632), with marginal insertions and with additional texts at the beginning and the end partly in the hand of Robert Vaughan (1592?-1666), Hengwrt, Merionethshire. The additions include '15 qual[i]ties of a good horse', 'Pymth[eg] cynneddf march da', 'Am yr Attaliadau. A'u Gwir Ddeunydd' ('Y mae chwe mâth o attaliadau mewn Llyfrau printiedig ac mewn Yscrifen ... '), two 'englynion' by John Davies in a copy of his dictionary presented to Rolant Vychan of Caergai, 'An admonition for the reading of the British words', 'Geiriau or Un Swn ac nid o'r un Feddwl', and 'The Numbers, Names, qualities, Royalties, Footings, Degrees of Age etc. of Beasts of the Forests according as they are termed of skillfull Forresters and Woodmen' (the latter from John Guillim, A Display of Heraldrie). On the inside lower cover is a paste-down of the certificate of subscription, 20 March 1767, by Thomas Owen of Jesus College, Oxford [rector of Upton Scudamore, Wiltshire, from 1779 until his death in 1812.].

Boundaries within Wales, &c.,

'Gossodedigaetheu a Messureu y Deyrnas, Cantrevi a Chymydeu Kymry', being a list of hundreds, commotes and other geographical divisions within Wales. At the end of every division is a list of its castles.
The list of 'Cantreds and Commotes of Wales' (p. 5) agrees practically with the one in Peniarth MS 163.

A 'Copy of the Dedication of, and Preface to Sir Thomas Wiliems's Latin-British Dictionary', together with notes on the life and work of Dr John Davies, Mallwyd, and ballads, which include the works of Rowland Fychan of Caer-gai, Lewis Morris and Richard Abraham, written c. 1738 (see p. 2). Also including englynion to Robert Vaughan, Caer-gai by Dr John Davies; a translation by Dr Davies of Thomas Wiliems's dedication of his Dictionary to Sir Richard Wynne, Gwydir; and notes concerning Thomas Wiliems's Dictionary at Hengwrt, with a copy of its Preface (see Peniarth MS 228).

'Carwr y Cymru'

Prose and poetry copied in 1674-1679 by Edward Roberts, vicar of Capel Garmon, 1671-1685, whose translation, Llaw Llyfr yw ddarllen ir Cleifion, appeared in 1754. The contents include a transcript of Carwr y Cymru yn annog ei genedl anwyl ... i chwilio yr Scrythyrau ... (London, 1631) and other religious treatises, prayers, etc., a catechism, 'Achau'r Cwrw', and poems by the transcriber and others, including Rowland Vaughan and Wiliam Phylip. The hymn beginning 'O Arglwydd arnat i mae mhwys' was printed in Examen Quotidanium Ymholiad Beunyddiol (London, 1658).

Five holograph letters from H[ugh] R[obert] Hughes from Kinmel Park, Abergele, to Henry Howard [? Colonel Henry Richard Lloyd Howard], [18]92-1909 (notes, in reply to queries, on John Vaughan of Caergai, his wife Margaret, dr. of Hedd Lloyd of Hafodunos, whom he married in 1698, the arms and some of the descendants of the said John and Margaret, Rowland Vaughan of Caergai 'a Welsh Poet of some eminence . . . born in 1560', Edward Lloyd of Tyddyn born in 1650 and his two wives, Sir George Wynne [1st bart. of Leeswood, co. The contents include, pagination in brackets, a list of one hundred and sixty-one items headed 'Welsh MSS. in the Possession of E[dward] Williams ['Iolo Morganwg']. Transcripts' (1-13); a list of thirty-one items headed 'Hen Ysgriflyfrau' being apparently manuscript volumes in the aforementioned Edward Williams’'s possession (15-16; many of these items can be identified amongst the Llanover manuscripts now being described); a list of titles of ? 'cywyddau' with numbers, poets' names, and page references headed 'MS. at Revd.
