Letters, 1840-1860, mainly to Stephens from the 'Cymreigyddion y Fenni' circle of writers and poets and also others, including Théodore Hersart de la Villemarqué, Albert Schulz ('San Marte'), John Ceiriog Hughes ('Ceiriog'), Robert John Pryse ('Gweirydd ap Rhys') and E. A. Freeman; and a few circular letters, etc.

Letters to D. Silvan Evans, etc.,

Eight letters, 1858 [?1859]-74, from Tho[ma]s Stephens, Merthyr Tydfil, seven of which are addressed to D. Silvan Evans and one to W. W. E. Wynne, Peniarth (copy). Accompanying one of the letters to D. Silvan Evans are transcripts of four letters, 1846-9, from the Reverend Walter Davies ('Gwallter Mechain'), writing from Penmaen Dovey n[ea]r Machynlleth and Llanrhaiadr, Oswestry, to Thomas Stephens ('Casnodyn'). Subjects touched upon include D. Silvan Evans's orthography [i.e. Llythyraeth yr iaith Gymraeg], the 'Madogwys', the Llangollen essay, the (new) bishop of Bangor, the Hengwrt manuscripts and articles for Archaeologia Cambrensis.

Some two hundred autograph letters, 1845-1876, to Stephens from a large number of individuals prominent in the life of Wales, including H[enry] A[ustin] Bruce, David Charles, Trefecca, Walter Davies (Gwallter Mechain), Lord Dynevor, Lewis Edwards, Bala, D. Silvan Evans, Thomas Gee, Lady Charlotte Guest, Lady Hall, David Howell (Llawdden), J. Spinther James, John Jones (Talhaiarn), W. Basil Jones and Henri Martin.

Some one hundred and seventy-three autograph letters, 1845-1874, to Stephens from a large number of individuals prominent in the life of Wales, including Max Muller, Richard Parry (Gwalchmai), Sir Thomas Phillipps of Middle Hill, Thomas Price (Carnhuanawc), William Rees, Llandovery, Samuel Roberts (S. R.), Albert Schulz, Connop Thirlwall, S. Prideaux Tregelles, Theodore Hersart de la Villemarque, John Williams (Ab Ithel), Morris Williams (Nicander), Robert Williams, Rhydycroesau, and Rowland Williams (items 201-373). Also included in the volume are miscellaneous further letters, together with other papers including notes, draft articles, visas, eisteddfod adjudications and poetry, 1840-1862 (items 374-400).
