Some fifty letters and cards, 1903-1931, to Margaret Sampson (née Sprunt), wife of Dr John Sampson (1862-1931), Librarian of the University of Liverpool, from Augustus John, 1903-1931 (ff. 1-25 verso), his first wife Ida John (née Nettleship), 1903-1906 (ff. 30-85), and his sister Gwen John, 1911-1913 (ff. 26-29). The letters contain mainly family and personal news.

Over one hundred and fifteen letters, [?1899]-1961, to Augustus John from various correspondents (surnames J-K), including Gwen John (5) [c. 1910]-[1925], Ida John (née Nettleship) (20) [?1899]-[1907], Professor Gwyn Jones (1) 1950, James Joyce (1) [1933], Dame Laura Knight (1) 1961, and Oskar Kokoschka (1) 1938.

Gwen John letters

Twenty-two letters, 1920-1925, from Gwen John, comprising one to her American patron, John Quinn, 18 December 1921 (ff. 48-50), and the remainder to his mistress, Jeanne Robert Foster, 1920-1925 (ff. 1-46), concerning personal matters and business; together with some eight letters from Foster to Quinn, 1920-1923, mainly relating to Gwen John (ff. 51-63, 67-95).
Also included is a photograph of Gwen John with Jeanne Robert Foster and Henri Pierre Roché in Paris, 1922, presented by Foster to Michael Holroyd in 1969 (f. 47); a typescript copy [?by Holroyd] of Foster's letter and notes on ff. 56-63 (ff. 64-65); and a related note from Foster to Holroyd, 3 April 1969 (f. 66). The letters contain references to John Quinn (ff. 5, 8, 10 verso, 15), Augustus John (ff. 44, 72, 73-74), Pablo Picasso (f. 49), Paul Deschanel (f. 53), the death of the actress Olive Thomas (f. 54), Henri Matisse (ff. 54, 74), Jan Masaryk (f. 70), Arthur Symons (ff. 73-74), Marie Laurencin (ff. 75, 85-86), Ezra Pound (ff. 83, 86-87) and Henri Pierre Roché (f. 93). Letters to Edwin John

Some thirty-three letters and postcards, 1928-1975, addressed to Edwin John, mainly from family members.
The correspondents include his father Augustus John, 1932-1946 (ff. 9-11), his aunt Gwen John, 1928-1933 (ff. 15-25), and his step-mother Dorelia McNeill, 1963-1967 (ff. 31-47). Also included are two letters from Edwin to his wife Betty John, [?1933] (ff. 48-51), and two postcards addressed to Gwen John from her father, Edwin William John, 1911 (ff. 13-14).

Photographs of fifteen sheets of sketches, 1928-1931, by Gwen John, several of them with annotations, being part of the collection of her drawings held at the National Museum and Gallery. The sketches, executed on writing-paper of the Grands Magasins du Louvre, form part of the same series as those now NLW MS 22297B.

Also included are three letters, June-August 1980, from art historian Cecily Langdale, New York, to Mrs Rachel Collyns, Bristol, niece of Mary Constance Lloyd, relating to Gwen John (ff. 21-23), and supplying background information on John's letter and on Tyrwhitt (f. 23).
