Miscellanea,

A notebook in the hand of J. H. Davies containing miscellaneous biographical and bibliographical extracts and notes from printed sources and from manuscript volumes in the British Museum, the National Library of Wales and elsewhere, including material relating to the abbots of Conway, Ystrad Marchell (Strata Marcella), Strata Florida and Llanegwestl (Valle Crucis); Welsh pedigrees; and manuscripts containing poetry, largely by Tudur Aled.

Herbal, etc.,

An early eighteenth century miscellany, with later additions, containing recipes in English; a herbal in Welsh, with 'englynion' in praise of herbs by William Cynwall, Huw llun, Rhys Iorwerth fynglwyd, Gryffith ap Efan, Dr. Richard Dafis ('Esgob Dewi'), Sion ap Sion, Sion Tudur, Howel borthor ('o'r Trallwng yn mhowys'), Thomas Efans (1619), etc; 'Brenin yn yr hên amser a ddyfeisiodd i ddeuddeg oi wyr ddoydyd 12 gair gwir dan eu perigl'; 'gofyn a wnaeth y saith wyr doethion iw gilidd. Pa ryw ddaioni ore ar ddyn ...'; 'y pethau a berthyn ar wr'; Welsh proverbs; 'Dysg i adnabod y lleuad newydd', 'I gael y Pasc tros byth', 'I gael difieu cablyd', 'I gael y Pasc byth', 'I gael newid y lleuad', and 'I wybod oed y lleuad', 'Tair Sir ar ddeg o gymru au Trefydd au dinasoedd au Cymydau, au heglwysydd' ('Diwedd Ebrill 10. 1722'); 'Trioedd mab y Crinwas'; 'Triodd [sic] yr usuriwr'; the story of 'Adar Llwch Gwin'; 'y Pedair Camp ar hugain', etc. The leather cover is blind tooled 'Ex Dono Edvardi Humphrey Anno Domni 1661', but there is no evidence to show whether or not this inscription refers to the present volume.

Hanes y Brenin Arthur; Barddoniaeth Gymraeg, etc.,

A composite volume of notebooks in the hand of J. H. Davies containing a transcript of 'Hanes Arthur brenin y Brython' from Peniarth MS 215, with an incomplete transcript from NLW MS 1 and a covering letter in the hand of Egerton Phillimore, Corris, 1923 (see J. H. Davies, 'A Welsh Version of the Birth of Arthur', Y Cymmrodor, Vol XXIV, 247-64); lists of contents of some manuscripts of Welsh poetry in the British Museum and the National Library of Wales; lists from manuscripts in the British Museum of first lines of poetry by Dafydd Nanmor, Dafydd Alaw, Dafydd ap Edmwnd, Rhys Nanmor, Huw Cae Llwyd, Deio ap Ieuan Ddu, Rhys Goch Eryri, Robin Clidro, Huw Llwyd, Huw Machno and Dafydd Llwyd Mathew; transcripts from manuscripts in the British Museum of poetry by D[afydd] ap Ed[mwnd], Hoell Reinalld, Rhys Goch Eryri, D[afydd N[anmor], Wiliam Mathew, Huw Dafydd Llwyd, Dafydd Llwyd Mathew, etc.; a few Cardiganshire and North Wales pedigrees; and some miscellanea. Mynegion i farddoniaeth,

Five files of unbound leaves containing titles and first lines of poems by mediaeval Welsh strict metre bards. The bards are arranged in alphabetical order of names and, in their present order, Cwrtmawr MSS 726-7 and Cwrtmawr MSS 728-30 appear to comprise two separate indexes. The compiler - inferentially working on manuscripts in the British Museum - has not recorded the shelf and page numbers of their source material; however, there are some such references and other insets and additions in the hand of J. H. Davies.

A scrap-book compiled, with a holograph introduction and table of authors, by David Evans, Llanrwst containing press cuttings, largely from Llais y Wlad, 1875-?81, of 'cywyddau' and 'awdlau', with annotations. The poetry consists mainly of the flyting 'cywyddau' of Edmwnd Prys and William Cynwal ('Yr Ymrysonfeydd rhwng Edmwnd Prys, Archddiacon Meirionydd, a William Cynwal, Prydydd ac Arwyddfardd') and 'cywyddau' ('Cyfansoddiadau') by Dafydd Llwyd ab Llywelyn ab Gruffydd Fychan. Llawysgrif Owain Gwyrfai,

A volume in the hand of Owen Williams ('Owain Gwyrfai'; 1790-1874), Waun-fawr, Caernarvonshire, containing a list of contents of a pedigree manuscript of Owen Gruffydd, Llanystumdwy, and poetry by Lewis Morganwg from a manuscript in the writer's possession, both compiled in 1843 with a view to publication in Yr Haul; and transcripts, made during the period 1871-2, of poetry by Cadwaladr Cesail (transcribed at the request of John Jones, Bryn y Gro, Llanystumdwy), and Morys Dwyfech. In the case of the latter poet, some transcripts are in another hand and there are copious corrections by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'). The volume is labelled on the upper cover 'Owain Gwyrfai MS'.

A volume of papers of David Jones ('Dewi Fardd'; 1708?-85), Trefriw, of which many are in his own hand. They comprise 'Gofuned Llythyr Dewi Fardd at ei Etholedig Gyfeillion'; a letter from David Jones to his friends ('Frodur a Chwiorydd yn ol y Cnawd'), 1751/2 (the writer's association with Methodism) (published in Cymru, 1907, pp. 185-6) (together with verses [?on 'Breuddwyd Gwion']; poetry by Rhys Goch o Ryri, Richiart Parry, T[homas] E[dwards] ('Twm o'r Nant') Humphrey William, Lloyd Ragad, Dafydd Jones (Dafydd Sion Dafydd), Morys Dwyfech, Edmund Price 'Arch diagon', and Ellis Robert, and anonymous 'carolau' and 'cerddi'; an extract from a treatise on herbs; letters to David Jones from Tho[ma]s Edwards ['Twm o'r Nant'], Pen isa'r dre [Denbigh], 1766 (a parcel for the recipient and the enclosed writing), William Sion 'o fyrun sauth ymlwy maun twrog' [Maentwrog] undated (the delivery of books to Owen Dafydd 'o faun twrog'), Dafydd Ellis, Ty du, 1766 (the sale of books on behalf of the recipient), Owen Roberts, 1778 (the publication of an interlude), Roger Thomley, Flint, 1746 (enclosing 'englynion', a desire to visit the recipient), Hugh Evans, Caernarfon, 1768 (the receipt of a book of 'cywyddau', subscriptions towards the printing of Blodeugerdd [Cymry] and Drych y Cymro), and Richd. Materials relating to Carmarthen,

Two volumes of transcripts, etc., lettered on the spine 'Collectanea concerning Caermarthen . . . Alcwyn C. Evans, Caermarthen'. In addition the fly-leaf of the first volume is inscribed 'Collectanea relating to the Town and County of Caermarthen'. The contents include a printed copy of Cartularium S. Johannis Bapt. [recte S. John the Evangelist] de Caermarthen . . . Three volumes containing 'A History of the Town and County of Caermarthen' by 'Cyfrangwr', i.e., Alcwyn C. Evans. The work was awarded the prize and a gold medal at the National Eisteddfod at Carmarthen, 1867. Much of the material is in the autographs of friends and official copyists. The statement in David Williams: Cofiant Cynddelw, p. 684, that the greater part of the volume is in the author's own hand is incorrect.
