Date(s) on item: Reg. yr 5, RabiI 12 sent: December 9 received Received your letter of 17 Safar, reg. yr. 5 informing that on 16 Muharram you sent a reply to Nawab Wazir al-Mumalik's letter as well as letters to Umdat al-Mulk Maharajah Thakur Mall and others and that you hoped they have been received by the addressees. You had received another letter from the Nawab Wazir al-Mumalik but was not able to reply to him because of other engagements. These letter were received by me on 9 Rabi I and were despatched by my own messengers to the Nawab Wazir al-Mumalik Bahadur, Umdat al-Mulk Maharajah Thakur Mall Bahadur, Rajah Daler Singh and Muhammad Sulaiman Khan Bahadur. I have written to the Rajah that he should deliver your letter to Nawab Wazir al-Mumalik in private and at the same time get a reply from him and send it to me. I will send this to you without any delay. Meanwhile, if you are writing a reply to Nawab Wazir al-Mumalik's other letter, kindly mention that before taking any decisions he should consult Mr Amherst Sahib. I always perform my duties with dedication and faithfulness and do not receive any orders from anyone but you. Earlier I had informed you about the parwanah issued by Mir Muhammad Jafar Khan with his own seal to Rajah Ram Narayan accusing him of interfering in the administration and revenue collection of Shahjahanpore, and Bhimpore, etc., and how the difficulties of the Rajah were resolved. Before this I had informed you about Khvajah Muhammadi Khan who for seven years was administrator of Nawab Samsam al-Daulah's estate and used to pay the dues of the sarkar. The group donated in 1987 comprises letters from Gareth Vaughan Jones to his family, 1922-1935, many while on foreign travels; letters to him, 1919-1934; a curriculum vitae and references, 1925-1934; research notes, [c. 1930]-1932; typescripts, drafts and notes for articles and lectures, [1925]-[1935]; typescripts of press articles written by Gareth Vaughan Jones during his world tour, 1934-1935; newspaper cuttings of Western Mail articles by Gareth Vaughan Jones, [1933]-[1935]; papers concerning Gareth Vaughan Jones's death, [1935]; printed books, 1926-1927, and papers of his father Dr Edgar Jones, including letters, 1890-1952; letters concerning the death of Gareth Vaughan Jones, 1935; press cuttings and papers relating to his time as head of Barry County School, 1906-1935; typescripts of broadcasts and talks, 1939-1945; and papers relating to his death, 1953. The papers deposited in 2007, 2010 and 2011 comprise family papers, 1894-2007, including a few papers relating to Gareth Vaughan Jones's parents Major Edgar Jones and Mrs Annie Gwen Jones; papers of, or relating to, Gareth Vaughan Jones, 1916-2002, including diaries, notebooks, press cuttings of his articles, letters, mainly from him to his parents and other members of his family, and papers relating to his capture and subsequent murder in August 1935; and the papers of Dr Siriol Colley, 1922-2004, mainly deriving from her researches into her uncle's life, work and death, including transcripts and photocopies of relevant source materials. The material donated in July 2011 comprises six pocket diaries containing detailed observations and comments on Gareth Jones's travels, mainly in Germany and Russia, between 1931 and 1934, together with the last passport issued to him in 1930, and a few stray items which have been incorporated in the previous files. Another group includes photographs, postcards, negatives and lantern slides, [c. 1900 - c. 1990].

Two boxes containing additional papers were received in July 2018.

Gareth Vaughan Jones's personal copy of Russische National-Bibliothek (Leipzig, 1881), with the following notes inscribed in the front of the volume “Gareth Vaughan Jones, Trinity College, Cambridge. Riga, den 4 August, 1927”; February 2025 and his copy of Das Ende Der Reparationen by Hjalmar Schacht.

A small chest presented to Edgar Jones, Gareth Vaughan Jones' father, on being granted the Freedom of the Borough of Barry in 1950, together with a certificate marking the occasion, related press cuttings, photographs of Edgar, Annie Gwen, Gareth and Raymond Jones, a photograph of Gareth Jones' dog, and a letter from the University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire following the death of Edgar's brother, Raymond, during the Great War; together with an article by the depositor about Annie Gwen Jones; March 2025.

The letters are interspersed with various other papers relating to parochial matters, 1788-[1858] and undated, including an essay ‘On the Propagation & Establishment of Christian [?] among the Cymry . . . ‘ etc, undated (nos. 1-18); a list of book prices for Sunday Scholars, undated (45); documents relating to Darowen tithes, 1711-1801 (no. 46), 1825 (no. 51), 1818 (no. 74); a petition to William Wynne Esq from William Davies, Cemmes, Llanegrin, undated (no. 47); record of Poor Rate collected, 1810 (no. 48); a list of contributors from Darowen Parish to the Waterloo Association to support widows & children of those wounded in the Campaign, [?1815] (no. 49); Rates for Cuttings Turfes, 1818-1827 (no. 70); marriage certificate for David Owen, Darowen & Mary Davies, Penegroes, 1833 (no. 77); and a Darowen Register of Burials, 1816-1826 (no. 80). The bundle also contains a number of receipts, including for the Newtown Turnpike Trust, 1820 (no. 19), and John Smith Drapers, 1835 (no. 99).

Richards family of Darowen,

Sermon and scriptural notes, [?1818]-[?1848], of the Rev. Thomas Richards 'Junior' (1785-1855) of Darowen etc. Some of the notes may derive from other members of the Richards family, including the Rev. Richard Richards (1780-1860) of Caerwys. The sermons were preached at various Montgomeryshire parishes including Caerwys, Darowen, Llangynyw, Meifod and Welshpool.

Thomas Richards, vicar of Darowen, informing him of the decision to award annuities to various individuals resident in the parish and enclosing certificates and receipts for completion. One of the documents is a form for use relating to the award of an annuity to a blind person.

Letters, 1794-1846 and undated, mainly addressed to the Rev. Thomas Richards (1754-1837), vicar of Darowen, interspersed with a few letters from him and some stray letters. Most of the contents of the letters refer to ecclesiastical and parochial matters and events within various churches. Some of the correspondents discuss personal and family problems and some refer to national events. A number invite Thomas Richards to attend services and events in other parishes and discuss ecclesiastical appointments. There is also a list of the resolutions passed at a meeting of the committee of the Cymmrodorion held at Powys Castle on 17 September 1823.
