Manuscripts and papers, [1540x1600]-1850, from the library of Dr William Owen Pughe of Mysevin, relating primarily to Welsh literature and culture and to antiquarian subjects. The material includes correspondence addressed mainly to William Owen Pughe, from prominent contemporary antiquarian and literary figures, including Edward Williams (Iolo Morganwg), Owen Jones (Owain Myfyr), Theophilus Jones, Richard Llwyd, Sir Richard Colt Hoare, Richard Fenton, Thomas Pennant and Edward (Celtic) Davies; manuscripts in the hand of William Owen Pughe, Iolo Morganwg and others, including Owen Pughe's translations of the Mabinogion; manuscripts and printed papers relating to the Gwyneddigion Society, the Cymreigyddion Society and the Cymmrodorion; diary of William Owen Pughe, 1811-1835; and transcripts of unpublished letters and papers, 1792-1820, of the writer and prophet Joanna Southcott.

Welsh-English Dictionary

'No.1' copy of William Owen [Pughe], A Dictionary of the Welsh Language, Explained in English…, 1st edn, 2 vols (London: Printed for E. Williams, 1803, Libri Walliae 4188, 4190), with authorial annotations, [1803x1832].
The first volume (NLW MS 24211iC) consists of 'A Grammar of the Welsh Language' (ff. 5-90 verso) with annotations in pencil and ink on some 22 pages (ff. 7-48 passim), 'The Introduction to the Welsh Dictionary' (ff. 92-98 verso) and the dictionary, letters A-F (ff. 100-392 verso), with pencil and ink annotations on 68 pages. The second volume (NLW MS 24211iiC) consists of letters G-Y (ff. 1-330 verso) with pencil and ink annotations on 29 pages (ff. 26-298 passim), together with a single page of Addenda (f. 331), many of which correspond with the annotations in volume 1. Most of the annotations recorded in the outer margins have been trimmed, some very extensively, during binding. A copy of the 1831 engraving of Idrison [i.e. Owen Pughe] by T. George and R. Woodman has been pasted in on NLW MS 24211iC, f. ii verso. Miscellaneous notes, in several hands, found loose in the first volume have been placed in an archival envelope (NLW MS 24211iC, ff. 394-398).

Public dinner for William Owen Pughe

A large sheet, consisting of four individual sheets of paper pasted onto a card backing and headed with the printed title '[P]UBLIC DINNER TO W. Owen Pughe, D.C.L. At 3 o'Clock on TUESDAY the 4th of March, 1834, in the Town-Hall, Denbigh', listing the names, in most cases the signatures, of 107 attendees, with one further signature having been erased. The list appears to have been used to record the payment of subscriptions for the event.

Medals

Four medals, 1824-1834, one presented to William Owen Pughe, May 1824, and three to his son Aneurin Owen, 1832-1834.
They comprise: (i) the medal presented to William Owen Pughe on 22 May 1824 in a meeting held at Freemasons' Hall, London, to celebrate the fourth anniversary of the (revived) Cymmrodorion Society (inscribed 'Cymmrodorion Llundain i Idrison am ei Ymegnïon er Amlygu Jaith ac Hanesïon y Cymry Mai 22. 1824'; it was designed by [John] Flaxman, RA, and executed by [William] Wyon of the Mint, see The Cambrian, 29 May 1824, p. 4); (ii) a medal awarded to Aneurin Owen at Beaumaris Eisteddfod, 1832, for his essay on agriculture ('Eisteddfod Beaumaris / Aneurin Owain am ei Draethawd ar Amaethyddiaeth 1832'); (iii) a further medal awarded to Aneurin Owen at the same eisteddfod, inscribed 'Presented by their Royal Highnesses The Duchess of Kent and The Princess Victoria to Aneurin Owain August 1832'; and (iv) a medal awarded [to Aneurin Owen] at Gwent and Dyfed Royal Eisteddfod, [Cardiff, 20-22 August 1834], for the best [Welsh] song ('Rhoddwyd yr Ariandlws hon am y Gan Oreu'). All except (iv) are housed in their original presentation cases.

Rental

A volume containing rent accounts, 1771-1813, with individual tenants of the Corston estate in respect of properties in Lampeter [Velfrey], Pembroke, Lanpha and Portclue, Cosheston, Newton in Manorbeer, Lamaston, Pembroke ferry, Monkton (Mounton), Mat[h]ry, St. Mary (Tenby), Rudbaxton, Nash, Letterston, Narberth, Martletwy, Clyde, East Williamston, Templeton, Loveston, Lawrenny, Llawhaden, etc., Pembrokeshire, and St. Clears, Carmarthenshire, and of Cresswell Colliery in Pembrokeshire. There is an incomplete index to the first part of the volume.

Rental

A volume containing a rental of properties of the Rev. Dr. Hugh Thomas and Mrs. Mary Thomas in Tenby (e.g. Scotsborough, Knightson, Cornishdown, etc.), 1765-1818, and (beginning at the end) a statement of receipts and disbursements on behalf of Hugh Thomas and Mary Thomas, 1765-1819. The later accounts were kept by Jno. Leach.

Welsh Black Cattle Society

Material relating to the formation of the Welsh Black Cattle Society, including typescript minutes of a conference held at Swansea, 20 May 1904; and draft entries by Lieut.-Colonel Henry Leach for the first Herd Book, together with certificates of entries and two letters to Henry Leach from James Thomas & Son, Haverfordwest, secretaries to the Society, and J. M. Griffiths, Penally, Pembrokeshire, 1905.

Two herd books of Corston, containing a list of bulls and heifers (with references to purchases, to the awards of prizes at agricultural shows, etc.), 1864-1905, and a list of cows, with dates of calving, 1864-1897.

Three manuscripts of a valuation, with annotations and revisions, of furniture, printed books, electro-plated goods, and sundries, the property of the late John Leach, Esq., at Ivy Tower, made by John Ormond, Pembroke, and Richard Mason, Tenby, appraisers, 11-14 August 1876.

Sale book

A sale book of the effects of Henry Leach, Esq., at Corston, of the letting of lands by auction, and of corn, 14 September 1848; together with an acquittance, 24 March 1849, from Jno. Jones, the auctioneer, to H. Leach for £50 on account of the sale.

Estate of John Allen

A volume containing a particular of the goods and chattels of John Allen late of Dale Castle, Pembrokeshire, deceased, sold by public auction, 5 December 1768, together with two copies (one inset) of a particular of such part of the estate as is on the tenement and lands of Comkow, sold by public auction on 12 December 1768.

A volume containing transcripts, with some annotations, of the wills of Thomas Foster of Egham, Surrey, 8 April 1762 (probate granted 28 November 1765), Joseph Foster Barham of Queen Ann Street, Middlesex, 22 June 1832 (probate granted 15 October 1832), William Joseph Barham of Trecoon, Pembrokeshire, 7 August 1839 (testator died 26 June 1840), and the Right Hon. Henry [Tufton], 11th earl of Thanet, 21 December 1848.

Lists of sheriffs of Pembrokeshire from 1540 to 1864, together with additions to 1878, and of mayors and sheriffs of the town and county of Haverfordwest from 1563 to 1864.

Poetry

A volume of eighteenth century poetry, and some prose, transcribed by Thomasina Smith, afterwards Thomasina Leach, wife of Abraham Leach [the younger] of Corston. Among the poets represented are R. B. Sheridan, John Dryden, Thomas Gray, and Oliver Goldsmith, and the titles include 'On Sir Joshua Reynolds', 'Address ... spoken by Mrs. Siddons ....', 'Written at Stratford upon Avon at the tomb of Shakespeare', 'On seeing the Prince of Wales at the Ranelagh fete, 1789', etc. The prose items include 'Resolutions form'd to promote regularity at Shanes Castle during the meeting for the play of Cymbeline'.

Hunting diaries

Two volumes of hunting diaries kept by Henry Leach, Corston, 18 September 1877-31 March 1887. At the end of the volume are tables giving the dates of visits paid within each season to a large number of places in Pembrokeshire.
