Scope and content
The file comprises an original bundle of copy particulars no's 1-6, and copy particulars of Sir William Morgan's freehold Breconshire estate and his copyhold Monmouthshire estates which were not included in his marriage settlement and were not afterwards conveyed to the uses of the settlement. A pedigree of the Morgan family from Sir William Morgan (c.1562-1655). Most of the remaining papers relate to the manor of Basaleg, which lay in the parishes of Basaleg, Peterstone, Risca, St Brides and St Woolloos. Copyhold land in the parishes of St Woolloos, St Brides and the lower part of Basaleg descended by borough English, descending to the youngest son of the dead tenant, and for want of a son to the youngest daughter, and for want of a daughter to the youngest of the next of kin. Lands lying in Risca and the upper part of Basaleg are gavelkind and descend between all the sons, and for want of sons between all the daughters, and for want of daughters to all the next of kin. Jones argued that all but three acres of the manor was copyhold, while Morgan argued that much of the rest of the manor was also freehold.
