James Lloyd (1721-1800) was the last of his family to live at Ffosybleiddiaid. In 1750 he married Anna Maria Lloyd (1728-1786), the only child and heir of Richard Lloyd of Mabws, which explains the mingling of the Ffosybleiddiaid and Mabws papers.
An affadavit in CM 19/7/4 includes ‘Mr Philipps [of Pentypark] died on the 26th Oct. 1790 and his daur Miss Jane Philipps took possession of all the Pembrokeshire Estate except the Clarbeston tithes’; she died in Nov. 1815.
Colonel Philipps died in April 1837, and was succeeded in his estates by his son James Beynon Lloyd Philipps, who had a life interest only.
John Philipps Allen Lloyd Philipps (fl. 1832-1866). John Allen Lloyd Philipps (d. 4 June 1884), master of Mabws, had a daughter Henrietta Edith Begbie (‘Edith’, fl. 1879, d. 24 Feb. 1911), the wife of Alfred Glynn Begbie (Major in 1881; retired Lieut-Col, Royal Engineers in 1910; d. 25 Oct. 1921), son of Francis Hamilton Begbie, and brother of ‘Bessie’ Begbie, who got an annuity from Sir William Gibson Carmichael over some Begbie estate inheritance mix-up. In his will dated 8 March 1879, John Allen left a life interest in his estate to another daughter, Elizabeth Charlotte Mary Hughes (fl. 1879-1918; ‘since deceased’ in a deed of 6 March 1928).
Bessie Begbie, above, is presumably the Elizabeth Begbie (fl. 1881) of 20 Westwick Gardens, West Kensington Park, Middlesex, spinster, one of the next of kin of Susannah Margaret Glynn (fl. 1881), a confirmed lunatic of many years, and in 1881 a patient at Haverstock House lunatic asylum. If Elizabeth survived Susannah, and Susannah died intestate, Elizabeth would inherit one tenth part of Susannah’s personal estate. In a mortgage of Sept. 1881 (in CM 19/3/10), Elizabeth mortgaged her interest to Major Alfred Glynn Begbie [her brother?] for £100.
John Allen Lloyd Philipps married Mary Laura Bonsall, spinster (pre-nuptial settlement dated 20 Aug. 1878). There was no issue from the marriage by the time John Allen died in 1884, and by 1910 Mary Laura was the wife of William Davies of Ffosrhydgaled, esq. (conveyance dated 22 March 1910), and still receiving an annuity of £300 in 1912, charged by the 1878 marriage settlement on the Mabws estate. A letter from Ronald Philipps Glynn Begbie (RPGB) to ‘Evans’, 14 July 1932, including ‘Thank you for yours as above re annuity of Mrs M.D. I had seen the notice of her death in The Times’ (CM 19/6/12), probably refers to her.
In the conveyance of 20 Jan. 1912, both Alfred Glynn Begbie, retired Lieut-Col of the Royal Engineers, and RPGB (b. 18 July 1885, fl. 1932), esq., are described as of Mabws. RPGB was the only son of Henrietta Edith Begbie, so presumably Alfred’s son. This conveyance is preparatory to the pre-nuptial settlement of RPGB of 22 Kidbrook Grove, Blackheath, Kent, lieutenant in HM Artillery, and Helen Gladys Dolphin of No. 8 The Paragon, Blackheath, spinster.
Besides RPGB, Alfred G. Begbie also had a daughter, E. M. G. Cowan (fl. 1929).
In April 1923, RPGB, still of 22 Kidbrook Grove, but using Woolwich Artillery College-headed note paper, appears to have been selling the estate by lots, including Mabws itself to Gordon Davies.
