Ffeil P 1/71 - Octavius Morgan's antiquarian papers

Original bundle of notes, letters, pedigrees, abstracts of records, and other papers relating to the Herbert family, earls of Pembroke, the Herbert families of Ewias, Coldbrook, and St Julians, the Morgan families of Tredegar, Pen-carn, and Llangatwg Lingoed (later of Charmston in the Golden Valley in Herefordshire), the Gould family, the Stradling family of St Donats in Glamorgan, the Thomas family of Llanbradach and Ystradmynach, and loose papers, including on the lords lieutenant of Monmouthshire, William Baker, esq. (d. 1651), a Dominican monk of Abergavenny, the excavation of an unnamed barrow, the tomb of Sir Rhys ap Thomas (1451-1527) in Carmarthen church, and the rebuilding of the church at Old Alresford in Hampshire. Many of the letters are addressed to Octavius Morgan, and many of the notes are in his handwriting. -- The Morgan papers include photographs, 1902, of the Tredegar hatchments in Machen church, and a copy of a song, 'On Sir William Morgan, knight of the Bath's losing the badge of the order', ascribed to Stanhope, earl of Chesterfield, or to Sam Wesley, usher of Westminster School, and transcribed from [BL?] Add. Ms. 14934, fo. 213. -- The photographs are contact-print sized photographs glued to a piece of paper endorsed 'Tredegar "Achievements" "Hatchments" in Machen Church, 1902'. The hatchments are those of 'Jane wife of Thomas Morgan esq'r M.P. died 1767 aged 64', 'Thomas Morgan esq'r M.P. of Tredegar died 1769 aged 67', 'Mary wife of Charles Morgan esq'r M.P. died 1777 aged 42', 'Charles Morgan esq'r M.P. of Tredegar died 1787 aged 51', 'Anna Lascelles died 1862', 'Francis wife of Rev'd A. Morgan died 1867', and 'Rev'd Augustus Morgan died 1875' (two copies). -- A copy of a nine-verse song, 'The Cambro-Briton robb'd of his bauble' (Printed London, 1727), and a late-19th century bowdlerised six-verse version entitled 'On Sir William Morgan of Tredegar losing his star of the order of the Bath, 1727' have been added to the file for convenience. Annexed to 'The Cambro-Briton' is 'Bob and Harry: a new occasional song', apparently relating to the knightly Bob (aka Robin?) demeaning himself by answering Harry's pamphlet in kind.
