Miscellaneous notes and sketches ? by the Reverend Elias Owen [for whom see the two preceding manuscripts], including sermon notes; notes on some archaic words, phrases, etc., of Montgomeryshire; a brief note on the rood loft in Derwen parish church [co. Denbigh]; notes on ‘Ffynnon Vair’, and the ruined chapel of that name in the parish of St. Asaph [co. Flint], being largely extracts from Archaeologia Cambrensis, 1st series, vol. 11, pp. 261-7; pencil sketches of the interior and exterior of Gweddelwern parish church [co. Merioneth]; and copies of memorial inscriptions, etc., in the last named church. Also a holograph letter from [the Reverend] Elias Owen, from Efenechtyd Rectory, to Mr. Pennington, 1887 (the finding of recipient’s certificate, a request for his reports for 1885-7); notes on Christ College, Brecon; a list of Wynn portraits at Nerquis Hall [? co. Flint]; and a note headed ‘Rev. Elias Owen in account with R. Williams - Selections from the Hengwrt MSS’; these last three items not being in the hand of Elias Owen.

A notebook begun in 1826 by John Williams (1806-1856), Baptist minister and author of Yr Oraclau Bywiol, containing essays, sermons, poems, etc.

Autograph Letters

One of four volumes comprising three hundred and sixty-four autograph letters and copies and drafts of letters of the period 1787-1930. The two main groups among them are those addressed to 'Nefydd' and Daniel Jones, but there are also two very much smaller groups of letters to Benjamin Jones ('P. A. Môn') and Benjamin Thomas, Baptist minister at Culmstock, Devon, and nephew of Joshua Thomas, Leominster. They are generally of personal, religious, or Baptist interest, although a number of letters addressed to 'Nefydd ' relate also to his educational activities. -- Among the subjects discussed in MSS 7163-6 are British Schools at Penmorfa, Llandygwydd, Devynnock, Llandilo, Abertillery, Llantrisant, Cwmdare, and Five Roads, Llanelly, and appeals for financial assistance for the Baptist churches at Caernarvon, Tenby, Cwmsarnddu, Llanfyllin, and Stanhope Street, Liverpool. Letters from America are chiefly of a denominational character. David Thomas, Llwyn, discusses the reaction in Carmarthenshire to the French Revolution and refers to meetings held at Carmarthen and Llandovery to pledge loyalty to the Government and to burn an effigy of Tom Paine. A manuscript of John Roberts ('Ieuan Gwyllt') used originally as a register of the pupils who enrolled in his school at Nanteos Arms [Capel Seion, near Aberystwyth] from its foundation on 12 June to 1 July 1839. The volume was subsequently used, [c. 1839-1840], to record hymn-tunes, hymns, metrical psalms, etc., by 'Ieuan Gwyllt', and notes of sermons by John Hughes, Pontrobert, [Thomas] Richards, Fishguard, David Howels, Thos. Evans, O. Williams, and H. Hughes, Llanrwst.

Manafon parochial papers

Material collected by Walter Davies and relating mainly to the parish and church of Manafon, including Manafon tithes, the enclosure of common lands, pews in Manafon church, Queen Anne's Bounty, and the British and Foreign Bible Society; prayers and sermons; a fragment of an address on reading the scriptures [? in the hand of Lewis Bagot, bishop of St. Asaph]; papers relating to the orthography of the Welsh Bible; an essay written by Efrydydd for an Amlwch eisteddfod, 1866, on Cysondeb Daiareg â'r bennod gyntaf o Genesis; a letter, April 1, 1826, from the deacons and elders of The Church of Christ meeting at the old Chapel Llanbrynmair, inviting Samuel Roberts (S.R.) to accept their unanimous call to become co-pastor of the church and assistant to his father at Llanbrynmair; etc.

Llyfr pregethau Samuel Williams,

A manuscript in the hand of Samuel Williams (c. 1660 - c. 1722), vicar of Llandyfriog, Cardiganshire, containing forty-four sermons translated from or based on several authors e.g. [Simon] Patrick [successively bishop of Chichester and of Ely], [Nicholas] Brady [the elder], [Thomas] Adams, [Friedrich] Spanheim, [George] Smalridge [bishop of Bristol], [Theophilus] Dorrington, Cl[ement] Ellis, [Robert] Bragge [dissenting minister], etc. There is a list of contents at the beginning of the volume, and hymns ('Myfi yw'r Adgyfodiad mawr...', etc.) and metrical psalms by [Edmwnd Prys and] William Middleton have been written on the fly-leaves and in blank spaces at the end of some of the sermons. There are some additions, among them the Lord's Prayer, in the hand of the scribe's son, Moses Williams (1685-1742), vicar of Defynnog. Entries on the back of one of the original covers, also in the hand of Moses Williams, indicate that some of the sermons were preached at Dyvynog [Defynnog] and Cap[el] Ill[t]ud during the years 1728-30.

Commonplace book of Robert Roberts,

A commonplace book of the period 1826-8 largely in the hand of Robert Roberts, Tyn y Gors, Hafod Elwy, Nant y glun [Nantglyn], Denbighshire. It includes prognostications of Erra Pater based on the incidence of New Year's Day; receipts and IOU's; hymns; pence multiplication tables; calligraphic exercises; 'penillion telyn' and other free-metre poetry; memoranda relating to Tyn y Gors tithes; a list of sermon texts; astrological diagrams and prognostications based on the phases of the moon and the incidence of thunder ('llywodraieth y lleaud ar gorph dyn ag anifail yn ol ei simudiad trwyr Deuddeng arwudd ynghyd ar nodau' and 'wrth anser [sic] y digwyddo Tranau'); 'englynion' addressed to Peter Roberts; land tax accounts; etc.
