Biographical history
Thomas Stephens (1821-1875), antiquary and critic, was born in Pont Neath Vaughan, Glamorgan. He worked as a chemist in Merthyr Tydfil. From 1840 he was known as an 'eisteddfodwr', winning the prize at Abergavenny in 1848 for his dissertation on early Welsh literature. Stephens was also author of several essays and other works, including The Literature of the Kymry, first published in 1849.

Donated by Miss M. M. Davis and Mr R. R. Davis, the surviving representatives of Thomas Stephens per Major Frank Treharne James, Solicitor, Merthyr, July 1916.

A collection consisting mainly of essays and literary extracts by Stephens. Some of the works were submitted as competitive pieces at eisteddfodau.
