Administrative history
Thorowgood, Tabor and Hardcastle were a firm of London solicitors; they acquired a group of papers of the Poole family of Caenest, Merionethshire, who held land in the county from the 16th century. Several members of the Poole family were themselves leading solicitors in Caernarfon during the 18th-19th centuries. Some time before 1764, Richard Poole held the estate, which included land in the parishes of Llanbedr, Llandecwyn, Llanfihangel y Traethau, Llandanwg, Llanfair, Llanenddwyn, Llanddwywe; it passed to the Rev. Anthony Poole ([c. 1710]-1778), and then to his son Richard, (1736-1799). Richard married Mary Owen of Pencraig, Anglesey, thereby gaining the Pencraig estate and property in Caernarvon and Merionethshire. His son, Owen Anthony Poole, attorney and solicitor (1766-1823), was a tenant of Sir Robert Williams Vaughan of Nannau. In c. 1817, he moved to Gorphwysfa, Caernarfonshire. In the early 19th century, William Price Poole held the Pencraig estate. Richard Anthony Poole, (1797-1863) and his wife, Elizabeth, held the Caenest estate and other properties in Anglesey and Merionethshire, and mortgaged it in 1830, after which they moved to Caernarfon.
