Account book of Bethel (Caeo) and Bwlch-y-rhiw churches,

A composite volume of home-made notebooks containing financial accounts of Bethel (Caeo) and Bwlch-y-rhiw Baptist Churches in Carmarthenshire, 1814-29, in the hand of David Thomas (1756-1840), Llwyn (ywermwd), Llan-y-crwys. Numerous insets, also largely in his hand, include additional statistics and accounts, 1812-35; a letter of dimission, 1830; Welsh hymns; a personal and farm account book of David Thomas, 1814-18 and 1831-2; veterinary recipes; an account of money collected by Joshua Thomas, Llwyn on his bidding day, 1815, etc. Two leaves used by the scribe for the sake of the blank dorse are bidding letters from Llaewenog [sic] [Llanwenog], 1814, Cardiganshire and Llanllwny, 1829, Carmarthenshire.

Achau, barddoniaeth, etc.

An early seventeenth century manuscript, fragile, written c. 1611-1621 and possibly earlier by Roger Williams, clerk, rector of the parish of St. Nicholas, co. Glamorgan [the scribe of parts of Llanstephan MS 41] and containing pedigrees, Welsh poetry, medical and veterinary recipes, etc. Roger Williams [TLLM, 41n, 213-4] was the son of Roger William of Prisk [in the parish of Llanddunwyd (Welsh St. Donats)] and he married Elinor Rees [daughter of Rhys Amheurug (Rees Merrick)]: his pedigree is on p. 27 of this manuscript (cf. Llanstephan MS 41, p. 173). A folio or folios are wanting at the beginning and someone has written the words 'The Isue [sic] of Gruffydd fawr [De Radyr]' opposite the first page (p. 4). The contents, except where otherwise stated, consist of genealogical data relating to the persons or places specified as follows: p. 8, part of an account mentioning Pwllymyn, etc.; 9, the issue of Lle'n ap Kynwrige; 10, a 'cywydd' by Rys Brychan; 12, a 'cywydd' by Howel ap Davyd ap Ievan ap Rees; 14, mention of William Thomas, son of Thomas Gwilim Jenkin of Gwern ddy in the parish of St. Brids near Abergenvenye [sic]; 16, a copy of a general release, 1613, from Elizabeth Howell of Welshe St. Donettes, co. A collection of poems, medical and veterinary recipes, and miscellanea entitled 'Ail Biser Sioned sef Casgliad Cadwalader Davies [Gwyddelwern] wrth ei bleser . . .', with some additions. The poems include 'carolau', 'cerddi', 'cywyddau' and 'englynion' by Hugh Morys, Dafydd Nanmor, Maredudd ap Rhys, William Wynne, John [Siôn] Cadwaladr, Jonathan Hughes, Lewis Morris ('Llywelyn Ddu'), Ellis Roberts, Rees Ellis, Roger Thomley, Ellis Cadwaladr, Matthew Owen, Edmwnd Prys, Dafydd Manuel and others. A valentine from Cadwaladr Davies to Jane Jones is dated 14 February 1749.

Carolau a chaniadau duwiol, etc.,

A volume written in several hands of the seventeenth century and containing Welsh poetry mainly of a religious nature in strict and free metre ('cwndidau', 'cywyddau', 'penillion', etc .), a few medical and veterinary recipes, some in English, Welsh triads (f. 33 verso, 'llyma drioedd pawl'), and (ff. 36 verso, 40 verso) two items of religious verse in triplet metre in English. The poets whose work is represented are Thomas Lle'n (Thomas Lle'n Daio Pwel), Lle'n Daio Pwel, Thomas ap Ieuan ap Rys, Siankin Thomas, Gronw Wiliam, Davydd ap Risiart, Howell Siankin, Ieuan ap Rys 'o verthyr kynon', Wiliam Prys, Sion Siankin 'o benllin', Ll'n Sion, Sion(n) y Kent, Thomas Harry Morgan, Rys Goch, Howel Swrdwal, Iolo Goch, Howel D'd ap Ieann [sic] ap Rys, Davydd Ddu Hiraddig, Sion Tydr, Risiart D'd, Rees Pritchard (Rhys Prichard), Watkin Powell, and Jenk: [Richard]. Ff. 42 recto-69 verso contain poetical compositions by Rhys Prichard ['Yr Hen Ficer'], one dated 1616, and someone has supplied page references (in pencil) where possible to [Y Seren Foreu, neu Ganwyll y Cymry. Gan Rhys Pritchard A.M. . . . (Llanymddyfri: Rhys Tomas, 1770)]; there are, however, some differences between the manuscript and the printed text and not all the items in the manuscript are to be found in the printed volume. The handwriting of ff. 73 recto-74 verso is the same as that of NLW MS 13072B and I. A. Williams MS 7 and the contents of these pages relate in part to the year 1660. The last item in the volume is an incomplete copy of a long series of religious 'englynion' according to the letters of the alphabet by [Lewis Glyn Cothi]. There are a few annotations by Edward Williams, 'Iolo Morganwg', and a piece of paper bearing the name 'Taliesin Williams (Ab Iolo)' has been pasted in at the beginning of the volume.

Farming account book originally belonging to David Evans of Ayngstree, Clifton-on-Teme, Worcestershire, who seems to have moved there from the Llandysul area of Cardiganshire. The volume comprises accounts, 1897-1915, of sales of farming produce and of wages and allowances to servants and labourers (ff. 1-31, 148 verso-67 verso, 173 verso-7); a few veterinary, household and culinary recipes (ff. 2, 16, 30 recto-verso, 31 verso-2); and family and other memoranda. There are also farming accounts and memoranda, 1943-1968, probably from the Llandysul area (ff. 33 verso-41 verso, 144-6 verso, 172-4).

Pp. 7-58, 61-66, 171-210 are in the hand of Roger Williams, assistant to Bishop William Morgan (1545-1604); pp. 131-137 are in the hand of Dr John David Rhys; and pp. 67-112, 139-152 are in the hand of John Powel of Talgarth, Breconshire (see pp. 67, 139; see also Peniarth MSS 27 and 45). P. 58 contains a note, 1611, in the hand of Roger Williams concerning 'the fees that goeth vpon any person in suinge owt his lyveryes', and on p. 61 is a note, 1617, in the same hand concerning the 'benefactors of the Cathedrall church of Landaphe'. Also included in the manuscript is a sermon 'in praise of theves' (p. 197), triads (pp. 200-201) and medical and veterinary recipes (pp. 199, 210b).

A composite volume from the collection of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') written in several hands of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and comprising ten main sections: (I) The first section (pp. 1-121 and some unnumbered items) contains poetry by Tomas Edwards Nant, S[ion] Owen, [David Owen] 'Dewi Wyn Eifion' [sic] and (mainly) Robert Williams ('Robert ap Gwilym Ddu'), some possibly in his autograph. Other items include a list of books ('Catalek of all ye books that I Have'), some accounts headed 'Cost Capel garn talwyd' and 'heb Daly am Capel garn', observations entitled 'Lwybr Dyn neu Ysdyriaethau ar bedair rhan oes Dyn' by Robert Williams, a letter, 1845, from Ellis Owen, Cefn y Meusydd, to Mr Robert Williams, Bard, Bettws fawr, Llanystumdwy, containing verses by Robert ab Gwilym Ddu entitled 'Pererindod o'r Aipht i Ganaan; and a list of poems by ['Robert ap Gwilym Ddu']. Rhydderch, Owen Griffiths and D[afydd] N[anmor]. The next two pages contain verses in English by Gr: Lloyd and the loose folio contains 'englynion', one by Moris ap Evan ap Dafydd ['Morus Dwyfech']. A note at the foot of p. 9 reads 'Oed ein harglwydd, pan dorwyd, y ffordd y mynydd Bwlch Derwin gynta, 1739, y rhan isa, ai gorphen: Mehefin 18: 1740: Wm Ellias, a Griffith Davidd o fodychen, overseers', and there is a recipe for making ink on p. 10. (Viii) 'Englynion' by Edward Charles and a number of Welsh hymns (author's name not given). A volume of sermon notes bearing the name 'Richard Foulkes Dimbuch (crossed out) Ebrill 12 1813', above which J. H. Davies has written in pencil 'Richard Foulkes (1784-1823)' [i.e. 'Silas Glandyfrdwy', Baptist minister]. Other items include a few medical and veterinary recipes and some music.

An account of proceedings against [ ] Wrainham for presenting to the King a book called 'Revewe and Revivor of the Report of the Mr. of Rolls Phillips and the decree of my lord Chancellor', c. 1610; veterinary and medical recipes; and a tract entitled 'Shorte Articles by way of Instruccon concerninge the Dutye Office and Jurisdiction of the High Admirall of England collected out of the Lettres Pattents of that Office'.
