Administrative history

The duties of the Treasury Solicitor were first recorded in a commission of 1661, when the position was called the Solicitor to the Exchequer. After 1842, duties included acting as solicitor to further government departments, and providing legal services, including the drafting of legislation and contracts. In 1876, the Treasury Solicitor's department took responsibility for intestate estates.

Archival history

Part of the archive was arranged by the Public Record Office, and although an incomplete sequence, the arrangement has been retained and the remaining documents have been given reference numbers to fit in with the sequence.

Deeds and documents, [c. 1753]-1927, relating to properties in the counties of Brecknockshire, 1815-1834, Cardiganshire, [c. 1753]-[c. 1853, Glamorgan, 1851, Montgomeryshire, 1803-1857, Monmouthshire, 1843, and Pembrokeshire, 1819-1927, referred to the Treasury Solicitor for advice or litigation.
