Administrative history
Messrs Longueville & Co. of Oswestry, solicitors, was established in 1720. The firm acted on behalf of a number of notable families and large estates in north Wales and Shropshire, including the Chirk Castle estate, the Hengwrt, Rug and Nannau estate, and the Wynnstay estate. In 1988 Longueville merged with local solicitors John C Gittins & Co. and Minshalls to form LG Solicitors.
Archival history
The Wynnstay (Longueville) group group consists of papers which were identified as Wynnstay material within the several supplementary groups of Longueville papers deposited at NLW between 1942 and 1992. Items identified as the 1958 deposit came to NLW per Miss Mary C. Hill of the County Record Office Shrewsbury. All groups have been amalgamated and catalogued in compliance with ISAD(G)
Immediate source of acquisition or transfer
Mainly deposited by Longueville Gittins solicitors, Oswestry (previously Messrs Longueville and Co.) between 1942 and 1992.
One group deposited by Miss Mary C. Hill of the County Record Office Shrewsbury in 1958.

Scope and content
The Wynnstay (Longueville) group consists of papers which were identified as Wynnstay material within the several supplementary groups of Longueville papers deposited at NLW between 1942 and 1992. They comprise family settlements, trusts and probate records, 1710-[1948]; title deeds and other documents mainly relating to land sales and purchases, 1582-1945, including the purchases by Charles Watkin Williams Wynn in Montgomeryshire in the early nineteenth century; financial papers, 1770-1921; estate administration records, 1814-1928; estate letters, 1777-1957; legal papers, 1782-1925; election papers, 1813-1877, which include poll books and check books from the Denbighshire election of 1868; and miscellaneous files assembled by the Longueville and Co. office, 1717-1909.

Arranged into eight groups by category: settlements, trusts and probate records; deeds and documents; financial papers; estate administration records; estate letters; legal papers; election papers; and miscellaneous files. Most files were received intact from the Longueville office, except for some family settlements and estate records which have been assembled at NLW from loose papers.
