Capitular estates in Wales owned by the Church were transferred by the Welsh Church Act, 1914, to the Welsh Church Commission which was entrusted with the task of distributing the land to Welsh county councils, the National Library of Wales and to the University of Wales. The University's share of the former capitular estates was transferred on 29 July 1940. In order to administer and oversee the lands acquired by the University, the University Council on 17 July 1939 constituted the Capitular Estates Committee which took over the brief of the ad hoc committee established by Council at its meeting of 21 October 1938. The committee - which soon became known as the Estates Committee - acts on behalf of Council in relation to any questions of the sale, purchase or transfer of lands. It is obliged to submit an annual report of its activities to the Council. Much of the scattered estates in North Wales acquired by the University as a result of the Welsh Church Act, 1914, and by other means, were disposed in the 1940s in order to concentrate its resources on the administration of its estates closer at hand in south east Wales.
