History

The Barmouth Harbour Trust was founded by Act of Parliament in 1797, 'for repairing, deepening and preserving the Harbour of Barmouth'. The main problem facing the Trust during the second half of the nineteenth century was the silting up of the harbour; the majority of the records date from this period. In 1930, Barmouth Urban District Council took over the effects and role of the Trust, in accordance with the Barmouth Urban District Council Act of 1929, so that a sea defence scheme could be undertaken at Barmouth.
