History

In 1770, Cardiganshire gentry obtained an act to establish a turnpike trust to cover the whole of the county. The trust was divided into two sections, based on Aberystwyth and Cardigan. In 1844, the Commission of Inquiry into the turnpikes in South Wales recommended that the Government replace the trusts with nominated county roads boards. The resultant Cardiganshire County Roads Board was created, again divided into the Aberystwyth and Cardigan districts.
