History

Edward Copleston (1776-1849), moral philosopher, entered Corpus Christi College, Oxford in 1791. He quickly rose to prominence, largely due to his successful support in 1809 for the candidacy for the office of university chancellor of William Wyndham Grenville, Lord Grenville. Copleston served as provost of Oriel College, Oxford from 1814 to 1828 and was elected Bishop of Llandaff in 1827. He published works on economics, education and theology.
