Note
Kiranjit Ahluwalia is an Indian woman convicted in 1989 of the murder (later reduced to manslaughter) of her abusive husband. She was honoured in 2001 at the first Asian Women Awards in recognition of her part in bringing to light the subject of domestic violence and has co-authored an autobiography entitled Circle of Light. Kiranjit's conviction was overturned on appeal in 1992 on grounds of insufficient counsel.
Porn Enticknap is a Thai woman convicted in 1995 of the manslaughter of her husband.
Sara Thornton is a British woman sentenced to life imprisonment in 1989 for the murder of her abusive husband. Following a retrial in 1996, Sara's conviction was reduced to manslaughter and she was freed from custody.
Emma Humphreys was a Welsh woman imprisoned in 1985 on conviction of murdering her abusive boyfriend (also her pimp). In July 1995 she won an appeal against the conviction, which was reduced to manslaughter. Three years later, Emma died of an accidental overdose of prescribed drugs aged 30.
Justice for Women was established in 1990 as a feminist campaigning organisation that supports and advocates on behalf of women who have fought back against or killed violent men.
