The English Presbyterian cause was presumably established in Porthmadog before the 1890s, as the church published its second annual report for the year ending 1894. A chapel and Sunday school were built on the corner of Stryd Fawr and Stryd Glaslyn. The church had 59 members in 1969; by 1986 there were only ten members. Extensive dry rot was discovered in October 1987, and in February 1988 it was decided to sell the buildings. Negotiations for the sale of the buildings continued until at least October 1990.
By March 1990 the church had only seven members and no deacons, and was holding its services at Y Garth Presbyterian Church. At this point Lleyn and Eifionydd Presbytery resolved that the church cease to be a church, but a branch holding English services at Y Garth, and that the remaining members become members of Y Garth.
