Manuscript notebook, [?1818], containing copies of prose and poetry by Ann of Swansea (Ann Julia Hatton) connected with her novel Chronicles of an Illustrious House (London, 1816) which caused controversy for satirising Swansea polite society as the fictional 'Gooselake'.
Included are extracts from the novel, specifically sections relating to Gooselake, beginning at vol. 2, p. 74 (ff. 1-18 verso), dated 5 July 1818 (f. 18 verso); two poems responding to the furore surrounding the novel, the first addressed 'To the Great Dons of Swansea' (ff. 19-20), the second beginning 'Arms, Arms I sing! and many battles dire' (ff. 20 verso-26); 'Elegy on the Death of Mr Bamboo', dated January 1817 (ff. 26 verso-28 verso), and a single verse beginning 'Now lost in dust is Cambria's boast', dated 1816 (f. 29). A leaf identifying some characters from the novel with their real-life counterparts has been tipped in on f. i; this suggests that the unknown compiler of the volume had a close connection with Swansea.

The poem was first published in William H. Davies, Songs of Joy and Others (London, 1911) and thereafter appeared in various collections and anthologies, including William H. Davies, Collected Poems (London, 1916), The Essential W. H. Davies (London, 1951) and The Complete Poems of W. H. Davies (London, 1963). This fair copy was possibly written whilst the poet was in Gloucestershire visiting friends among the Dymock poets (see Selected letters of Robert Frost, ed. by Lawrance Thompson (London, 1965), pp. 122-124).

The typescript of a diary of a journey undertaken in 1790 from Newcastle-under-Lyme to Shrewsbury via Bristol and South Wales. The original diary was in the hand of Frances or Fanny Nicholson (later Mrs W. Shepherd), but apparently the diary was kept by one of her companions on the journey. The diary entries give detailed descriptions of the scenery viewed during the course of the journey and the places visited en route. There are interesting references to the towns and cities visited, churches, buidings, inns and houses. There are also references to industrial enterprises and various natural features viewed. There are also typescript copies of letters, 1803-1813, mainly from W. Shepherd to Fanny Nicholson, and letters, 1943-1949, discussing the potential publication of the material.

A volume, [17 cent., second ½] (watermark similar to Churchill 401), containing Scriptural genealogies (ff. 2-68) and the 'Onomasticon', a dictionary of individuals and peoples mentioned in the Bible (ff. 70-316 verso), both compiled by a certain William Spenser, gent.
The genealogies show the descent of Jesus Christ from Adam and Eve but also include pedigrees for the Twelve Tribes of Israel (ff. 8-31 verso); other peoples and empires appearing in the Old and New Testaments are represented by genealogies or by lists of individuals as appropriate (ff. 33-68); the section on the Roman Empire lists other figures appearing in the New Testament (ff. 57-68). As well as the Bible the compiler has made use of other sources including Josephus' Antiquities of the Jews (see ff. 138 verso, 161 verso, 187 verso, 195, 245); there are also extracts from Thomas Godwyn [Goodwin], Moses and Aaron: Civil and Ecclesiastical Rites Used by the Ancient Hebrewes (London: printed by Iohn Haviland, 1625, STC 11951), pp. 58-60 (f. 261 verso), 61-66 (f. 127 verso). The preface (ff. 2 recto-verso) consists mainly of excerpts from Works of the Great Albionean Divine Mr Hugh Broughton, ed. by John Lightfoot (London: printed for Nath. Ekins, 1662, Wing B4997), pp. 376 (2nd Tome), 689 (3rd tome). Many names and headings are picked out in red ink, with names of prophets in green ink. Various additions and marginal notes have been added to the Onomasticon in the same hand.

A transcript by Thomas Charles Townsend, Prestatyn, Flintshire, dated 1 August 1943, of the Order in Council of 1860 creating the ecclesiastical parish of Prestatyn (formally 'The District of Prestatyn', p. 3) from parts of the parishes of Meliden and Llanasa.
Included as part of the text are schedules describing the boundaries of the new district (pp. 6-8) and listing landowners and occupiers, with details of rent charges due, within the townships of Prestatyn and Meliden (pp. 8-11).

William Harris, minister of Heolyfelin Baptist Church, Aberdare, Glamorgan.

Notebook of Henry Harris, Ystrad Rhondda, begun in 1921, containing lists of place-names and field names in the Rhondda. Some of the names are taken from a tithe map of 1847 (ff. i, 1-51).
Also included is a typescript list of the same place-names, on loose sheets, the names numbered and in alphabetical order (ff. 52-98); typescript and manuscript notes, [?1938], on the Rhondda in the year 1737, including transcripts of Overseers of the Poor accounts (ff. 103-109); notes, 1938, relating to bird life in the Rhondda (f. 110); and three letters to Harris, October 1921-May 1928, including two from M. H. Jones, Penllwyn (ff. 99-102).

A typescript M.A. dissertation, 1957, for Liverpool University Department of Celtic by J[ohn] G[lyn] Penrhyn Jones, entitled 'A history of medicine in Wales in the eighteenth century'.
The dissertation includes chapters on social conditions in Wales, the impact of the Industrial Revolution, 'folk' medicine and herbalism, and biographies of prominent medical men. Supplementary material, including extracts from printed and manuscript sources, is to be found in the Appendices (ff. 164-329). Two tables of contents are included (f. iii, 163a).

A scrapbook, 1867-1882, begun by Evelyn Phillip Shirley of Ettington Park, Warwickshire, following his visit in August 1867 to his friend W. W. E. Wynne of Peniarth, Merioneth.
The volume initially contained ten photographs of Peniarth and its environs (ff. 11, 19, 21, 23, 25, 29, 31, 33, 37, 40) with numerous further photographs (and photographs of prints) being added showing other local views and related houses such as Glyn (ff. i verso-47 passim). Also included are leaves from W. W. E. Wynne's Pedigree of the Family of Wynne of Peniarth… (London, 1872), with hand-painted coats of arms added (ff. 2 recto-verso, 12 recto-verso, 20 recto-verso, 22 recto-verso, 24 recto-verso, 26 recto-verso), and additional manuscript notes by Wynne (ff. 13-18); four letters to Shirley from W. W. E. Wynne, [1868]-1877 (ff. i verso, 3-10, 34-35); three letters, June-July 1880, from W. R. M. Wynne (ff. 41-44) and E[dward] Breese (ff. 45-46), following W. W. E. Wynne's death, with copies of Breese's obituary of Wynne (ff. 50-52); and papers relating to the building and consecration of the Wynne Memorial Church at Bryncrug, 1880-1882 (ff. 53-59).

Documents concerning land and privileges in the Welsh Colony in Patagonia, comprising an incomplete document stating the propsed terms for transfer of the land; an incomplete copy of a similar document in Spanish signed by Lewis Jones, Love Jones-Parry and Guillermo Rawson; a Welsh pro forma document relating to land ownership in Patagonia; and the share certificate of Lewis L. Davies in the Welsh Colonising and General Trading Company Limited, 1917, signed by Michael D. Jones, Edward Foulkes and Sioned Pugh.

A volume compiled, 1798-[1808], by Henry J. Hughes, Llanbeblig, containing precedents of declarations, pleas, and other legal documents, together with cases and opinions and notes on replevin.
The precedents relate mainly to cases in Anglesey, Caernarfonshire and Merionethshire, [18 cent., second ¼]-[late 18 cent.]. The contents are listed on pp. iv-ix. An agreement to build a drain, 1829, is loose at the end of the volume (pp. 323-324).

Account book, 1754-1756, of Charles Cope Trubshaw, architect, builder and mason, relating to work carried out mostly in Staffordshire.
The volume contains accounts, with notes and memoranda, January 1754-February 1756 (ff. 1-70); and estimates, notes and sketched designs and plans for specific projects, 1754-1755 (ff. 70 verso-103, inverted text). There are numerous references to the building of the new parish church at Stone, Staffordshire (ff. 6-89 passim). A few additional items are loose within the volume (ff. 73a, 105) or have been tipped in (f. 104).

An album containing ninety-three holograph letters and documents, 1810-1915, apparently one of a series of at least five volumes brought together, [20 cent., first ½], by a member of the Malcolm family of Poltalloch, Argyll, Scotland, as a collection of the autographs of prominent legal, political, ecclesiastical and other public figures.
Fifty-six of the letters, 1894-1915, are addressed to George Cave, [later Viscount Cave] (ff. 5-7, 13-28, 36, 38-40, 42-44, 46-54, 56); three, 1868-1874, are to his father, Thomas Cave, MP (ff. 13, 31, 49). The typescript index to the contents on f. 2 records items, no longer present, from Winston Churchill, Benjamin Disraeli, Ulysses S. Grant, Andrew Johnson, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Queen Victoria, George IV and others.

Typescript copy, [?1952], of a memorandum, [?1786], by Dr Richard Price on his proposed scheme to re-establish a sinking fund to reduce the National Debt.
Tables referred to in the memorandum are lacking. A covering letter from the donor, 1952, is included (f. i).

Transcripts, [c. 1827] (watermark 1825), in an unknown hand, of journals of tours in Wales and parts of England undertaken by Sir Richard Colt Hoare in 1793 and 1801-1803, taken from manuscripts now at Cardiff Central Library, MS 3.127 and MS 4.302.
The journals include a tour of North Wales, 12 April-1 August 1801 (ff. 1-88, original pagination 1-176), and tours of South Wales, 25 April-14 July 1802 (ff. 96-160, pp. 1-128), 1 May-7 July 1793 (ff. 164-180, pp. 1-33) and 14 May-11 June 1803 (ff. 183-190 verso, pp. 1-16). These are all published, in edited form, in The Journeys of Sir Richard Colt Hoare through Wales and England 1793-1810, ed. by M. W. Thompson (Stroud, 1983). An additional fragment of a tour from Hagley to Stourhead, 24-27 August 1802, is also included (ff. 91-95, pp. 1-10); this is not recorded by Thompson. Each individual tour is accompanied by a list of places visited (ff. 89-90, 162-163, 181-182, 191). A letter, 28 September 1904, from Emmeline Salvin, concerning the volume's provenance, has been tipped in on f. ii.

Ten letters, 1877-1884, in English and Welsh, to David Edwards, farmer, of Gilfach Glyd, Ynysybwl, Glamorgan, from Thomas Thomas (Twm Ddwywaith), farmer, of Cefn Pennar Ycha, Aberdare, dealing with personal matters and including englynion, tribannau and other poetry in Welsh, mostly by Thomas (ff. 3-20); together with one letter to Edwards from [Henry Austin Bruce], Lord Aberdare, 11 August 1877, thanking him for translating an englyn into English (f. 1).
Also included are verses in English in an unidentified hand (f. 21), and a covering letter, 4 May 1953, from the donor (f. ii recto-verso).

A typescript history of Windsor Road Calvinistic Methodist Church, Caerphillly, written in 1946 by D. T. Salathiel to commemorate the Church's Golden Jubilee.

Account book, 1916-1923, of Tom Parry and Co., auctioneers, Porthmadog, apparently relating to their general store, ironmonger and chandlery business.
The volume contains accounts for the sales of various goods, including furniture, paint, oil and paraffin, ropes, brushes, cutlery and tableware and other household goods and hardware; there are no records relating to auction or valuation business. Customers consist of local companies, estates, ships and individuals, and include the Ffestiniog Railway Co. (ff. 79-80, 84 verso-85), J. W. Greaves & Sons Ltd (ff. 88-91), R[ichard] M[ethuen] Greaves (ff. 92-93, 98-99 verso), Lord Harlech (f. 111 recto-verso, 127-132), the Rhosydd Slate Quarry Co. (ff. 311-324, 326-328), the Tremadoc Estate (ff. 359, 361 verso), and David Williams, shipbuilders (ff. 371-372). Sundry accounts are on ff. 332 verso-351. Loose items (4 ff.) have been either tipped in or loosely inserted on the relevant pages.

Miscellaneous papers, [19 cent., last ¼]-1903, relating to the parish of Llanbadrig, Anglesey, collected by the Rev. Thomas Prichard, vicar of Llanbadrig.
These include a manuscript entitled 'My Village', [19 cent., last ¼], describing Cemaes and Llanbadrig (ff. 1-27); a volume in the hand of Thomas Prichard containing various texts including transcripts of documents concerning local charities and Church land, [late 19 cent.], and tithe commutation tables, 1891-1902 (ff. 28-66); miscellaneous correspondence of Thomas Prichard, 1893-1902 (ff. 49-50, 69, 83-84, 97, 100-103); tax receipts, 1892-1895 (ff. 71-82); and papers relating to the Ecclesiastical Dilapidations Act 1871, 1897 (ff. 87-90).
