Gwilym Lewis: Letters from Egypt

A bundle of 55 letters, 1943-1944, written by the late Gwilym Lewis to his parents Mr and Mrs Richard Lewis, Blaenau Ffestiniog, whilst serving in the Armed Forces in England and Egypt during the Second World War. The earliest letters written from Cromer, Norfolk and Woolwich are in Welsh and his letters from the Middle East are all in English except for a reproduction of a letter which is written in Welsh. Also within the bundle is a postcard from London and a Christmas greetings card issued by H.M. Middle East Forces sent from Egypt.

Eleven letters, [1930]-[1934], from Dylan Thomas to Percy Eynon Smart, a schoolfriend with whom he had co-edited the Swansea Grammar School Magazine, 1929-1930. The letters refer to this magazine, which Thomas was editing, 1930-1931, and to a literary periodical entitled 'Prose and Verse', which they proposed to publish, and include a draft preface by Thomas for the latter (f. 5 verso); they also include personal news and a rough draft of a poem by Thomas (f. 15 verso).

A delivery book, 1864-1872, of William Morgan and Sons, maltsters, Welshpool, recording deliveries of grain, malt, hops, etc., to customers mainly in co. Montgomery. Each entry includes the type and quantity of the goods delivered and the names of the customer, deliverer and receiver. Later accounts, 1917, relating to the sale of livestock have been added at the end of the volume (ff. 363v-7v).

Radnor, 1845-1876, containing copies of his letters and other documents relating mainly to his work as incumbent and including applications for preferment, 1843-c. 1852 (pp. 1-2, 5-7, 10, 20-2, 26-7); testimonials on his behalf from his parishioners and the inhabitants of Capel Banhadlog, Llandinam, co. Montgomery, c. 1850 (pp. 18-19); testimonials on behalf of his son, the Reverend Thomas Howel Evans, seeking an army chaplaincy, 1862 (pp. 49-55) (originals now NLW Penralley Papers 694-702); the will of David Williams of Allington, co. The prints include five lino-cuts, [1947]-1948, containing representations of Saint David (f. 70), King Nevenoe [Nominoë] (f. 74) and Saint Erwan [Yves] (ff. 75-76). An abridged version of the eleventh-century Latin 'Life' of St Catherine of Alexandria by Ainard of Rouen (ff. 1 verso-24); five Easter sermons attributed to St Augustine (ff. 25-43); incomplete text from Lamentations II, 6-11 (ff. 1, 43 verso). Written by three hands, hand II (ff. 25-43) more conservative, hand III (ff. 1, 43 verso) with neumes of St Gall type. Initials in red, with later marginal flourishes in red and blue; polychrome miniature of the crucifixion, 16 cent. (f. 24 verso). 'Quocunque tollatur Noreshein meum fatur', 15 or 16 cent., on ff. 1 verso-2; 'Nro 35', 'xxxv' on f. 1; 'Nro 35' (overwriting earlier '9187') and 'Hs.6.60.N.178' inside back cover.
