The Registrar was originally one of the two chief administrative officers of the University, the other being the Secretary to the University Council. Originally, the Registrar serviced the University Court and was responsible for keeping records of all persons admitted to the University and records of all persons holding degrees of the University. The office was merged with that of Secretary in 1963, so that the Registrar became responsible for servicing the Court, the Council, the Academic Board, the Guild of Graduates and all committees appointed by the Court or by the Council or by the Academic Board. In effect, the Registrar became responsible for all University administration. The office of Registrar itself was abolished in 1994 and replaced by the Secretary-General.
