John Owen Griffith (Ioan Arfon, 1828-1881), poet and critic, was born in Waunfawr, Caernarvonshire. Having received a minimal education, he nevertheless became a prominent figure amongst Welsh literary figures of his day and was also a noted geologist. He was the father of Robert Arthur Griffith (Elphin, 1860-1936).
