The School Examinations and Assessment Council was requested by the Secretary of State for Education and Science in September 1988 to advise on the rationalisation of the range of Advanced level syllabuses on offer, to reflect on the implications of the Government's report `Advancing A Levels,' and to ensure an appropriate range of good quality syllabuses at A and AS level.
